If you were wondering exactly what Apple had in mind with its
acquisition of Quattro Wireless a few months back, the picture gets a little clearer today with the announcement of the iAd mobile ad platform alongside
iPhone OS 4.0 today with the company saying that iPhone devs have a billion "ad opportunities" per day. The idea is to keep users in the apps to see interactive, "emotional" ad content as often as once every three minutes -- not to "yank" them out, as Steve puts it -- while developers are rewarded with a 60 percent cut of the revenue. Ads are hosted and served by Apple, and while there'll be some sort of approval process, Steve's describing it as a "light touch," so it probably isn't the same process traditional apps go through. This makes things considerably more interesting for the mobile advertising business as a whole, since Google's been trying to seal the deal on an acquisition of industry leader
AdMob for a while now in the face of some pretty intense FTC scrutiny. Certainly seems like this would grease the wheel a little bit, doesn't it?
From a developer standpoint I can understand these 'iAds' in free applications, to some extent. However, if I just paid $8.00 for a game I don't want to see any ads what so ever.
I really think that someone should of asked "Is iAds for paid apps too?" Just to clear things up.
@MatthewA
This is obviously in the hand of developers. But I don't see why a developer of a $8 app would ruin their customers' experience (and his review score on the App Store and ultimately his business) by showing ads in their app.
Each ad display will usually pay out no more than ¢1. It's not worth it if you have a good pay app. It's only for free apps, and it's exactly the same as AdMob or the other ads that are on most free mobile apps today, except for Apple's promise that it will be less annoying.
Does this mean that this will break compatibility with OS3? what about people who will not be able to upgrade to OS4 (1st gen devices)? Does this mean once a developer puts iAd into their app people stuck with OS3 will not be able to use that App? That would suck. I can see many developers jumping on the iAd train effectively locking out OS3 users.
@jesusbonjovi OS4 will be available to all, its just certain features like Multitasking that wont be possible on earlier generations.
@jesusbonjovi
Why would developers be that stupid? You make it sound like they don't want your business.
Is anyone else a tad upset that they are going to "keep users in an app"...
....I am going to flip my shit if I can't get out of an app when >I< want. I don't care what you are trying to sell, if I'm forced to watch your ad I don't want it.
@telestrial You got it wrong, completely wrong. This has nothing to do with being forced to watch ads or whatever.
What Apple said is this: If you click on an ad it will not quit the app that you are using and launch the browser. The ad will launch inside that app. If you change your mind, press the x button of the ad. You will be right back in your app. Or just press the Home button to leave the app.
every body can upgrade to 4.0 but you wont multitasking
What are you talking about? This is great!
Haven't you ever wanted to poke the Pillsbury Dough Boy's belly every 3 minutes of you life?
Yo Dawg. I heard you like iPhone applications. So we added an app inside your app so you can...
@hated one 60% isn't anythign special. Industry ad shares are between 50 to 60% depending on the company, so it's not like the extra 0-10% extra that the developers are getting is that significant.
i wonder if it will advertise anything usefull like android wm7 or rim or even palm or maybe vibrators for bending over for good old jobs
So Apple doesn't want flash on their phone, and all the ifanbois are like "awesome, no annoying flash ads on our sites!". So now you'll be getting annoying html5 ads in your apps! You think it's gonna be long before the ads start putting stuff on top of your apps?
"*woosh* a truck drives across the screen; *in huge letters* buy ford!"
Apple is giving developers the ability to FORCE apps on screen... jeez how STUPID do you think we are Steve... you blew it!
@bigsofty
You're totally wrong. This has got to be a new low for Apple haters.
@bigsofty
FORCE users? Where does it say that, anywhere, ever?
Waiting for the link.
Thanks.
For The Record: I will never click on an ad on my phone, iPhone or Android, or Palm, or even Microsoft. This iAd is nothing but the process of $$$.
Jesus wept.
People are frothing at the mouth here and making no sense at all.
Its an ad. Apple are not going to pin your eyes open with matchsticks and force you to watch them. Its same as it was before. If you don't want to view an ad, **don't bloody click on it!!**
Its as simple as that.
Its the same banner ad space etc. What is the big deal here?
Please go and watch the keynote and get facts in order before proclaiming that "Apple will force users to watch or endure ad's against their own free will" etc, ad nausum.
That's just stupid.
The ads seem to be non-intrusive. Bring on the iAd and kiss the flash and browser hijacking pop-ups goodbye.
@cherryboom
You're an angry elf.
