Yeah this thing has no Market... Oh wait..
@Bongo123
BULLSHIT... Best Buy has not sold out. Of the roughly 600 stores that sell these, here on today stock on hand counts. Call ANY store to verify they have all 3 in stock. PLENTY of them.
16GB version has 6928 on hand
32GB version has 6485 on hand
64GB version has 8299 on hand
@Bongo123
very nice! now they just need to make enough 16gb so I can find one...........
@FNG Uh, I have to agree. I was just at Best Buy less than 20 minutes ago and they had plenty in stock.
@FNG
The article never said they were sold out at Best Buy...
@Bongo123 More media hype than any device in recent history, a month of presales, and counting the stocking of every store in the world that carries them as a "sale"... and thats supposed to be impressive?
Didn't think so. ;)
@Bongo123 BTW, netbook sales, which received absolutely ZERO media attention accounted for... what was that, $12 billion in sales last year?
@Bongo123
just saved engadget under my bookmarks as Apple's publicity.
@Bongo123
My God, the whining, it's hilarious!
@FNG
and where u gettin your info from? none of the longisland bestbuy/apple stores have 16/32gb in stock.
@FNG
Wait, so Bongo fabricates something Engadget never said and you guys just all up-rank it because...? Pretty pathetic.
@Bongo123
by a striking coincidence there are also 450,000 gadget website/bloggers out there :D
@Ducman69
I understand what you're saying, but those are impressive numbers for a new type of device released during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The money from netbook sales represents a much lower profit margin that goes to numerous companies and manufacturers. Apple makes money not only on iPad sales but from iPad app sales, e-book sales, etc. So even if the iPad doesn't sell as well as the iPhone on release, Apple still can bank on the fact that the iPad apps are relatively more expensive than iPhone apps.
So I'm not arguing with you in your comparison with netbook sales. But that doesn't mean that Apple isn't going to sell quite a lot of iPads over time (there will be another spike in the fall, when school starts up and the multitasking OS upgrade hits the iPad. By the second and third generation, the iPad will be quite successful IMO.
@Anatidae Come on. You think Apple is just sitting there and does not supply more ipads?
Actually I'm pretty sure that Best Buy themselves said they sold out their entire stock on Saturday that they were given for launch weekend and expected new shipments to arrive on Monday and Tuesday.
Also several news sites (non-tech sites) reported that they called Best Buys all over the country and didn't find any that weren't sold out on Saturday. So the ones you would find in a store today are from the restocking shipments which are supposed to arrive a couple times a week as production ramps up.
Then there is the fact that Apple never predicted any number of sales at all, just that it would be a hit, which it certainly is.
And then to compare a five day sales total for the iPad (a single product from a single company) to 365 days of sales of what? 30+ products (netbook computer from every single computer maker there is besides Apple) like it has some meaning.
Are you implying that Apple didn't sell $12 billion in the first week like it is some kind of failure? You do realize that if Apple had $12 billion in sales the first week that all the other PC makers in the world would pretty much shut their doors now and get it over with.
Oh and I'm glad that netbook computers have received ZERO media attention in your mind, but the truth is they have received more media attention than any other computing platform for the past two years running with the exception of Apple products. Thousands of stories about netbook computers and their sales, reviews product announcements and so forth have graced the pages of all the tech sites for two years now. So anyone saying they get no media time is pretty much full of it.
And BTW I am a Windows 7 user all the way, SLi gaming rig desktop Dell laptop and Acer netbook as my personal computers atm. So i have no personal stake in Apple or the iPad succeeding or failing.
@FNG Ok, subtract that 420k sold.
@cobaltage
Have you looked at the Dow Jones? The economic depression's been over for some time now.
@dennisheadley I was in a Best Buy in Attleboro Ma, on Monday and they still had several of them left from their first delivery. The guy working the department told me they were only supposed to get 17 and they actually got in 75. I am sure they sold out on Monday though since they were closed on Sunday for Easter. I ordered a 3g one and I am still waiting to find out when it will ship.
@Ducman69
But remember, the netbook was built for cheapsters in bad economic times. Plus, sales were spread out over at least a dozen companies, so only a few companies made any significant money for selling netbooks. $12 billion is $12 billion so netbook sales were not insignificant. Yet, even now, sales of netbooks are tapering off and the U.S. computer industry wants to get rid of them because selling them is a losing business model in the long-term.
@Anatidae
It's funny when a mediocre Apple release still blows away the competition and the haters don't realize that. They've become so used of Apple's success that when they don't hit it out of the park they feel the need prance around. Ohs noes Apple only sold 10x as much as the nearest competitor, shucks sell their stock now. The Courier and Slate should be happy if they see their combined sales figures in the first month reach this. I'm sure when BestBuy sells out of their 2 they receive of the Courier, if they even want to put it on their shelves, the fanboys will be on here hyping up the fact that they sold out. Hows that Zune/Zune HD, Palm, etc coming along for you? oh price cuts due to junk sales? ouch.
Weren't they predicting sales of 750k on day one?
@Dr Blight it didn't reach the consensus wall street estimates, it'll be interesting to see what happens next.
@Dr Blight
That was only one analyst (iSuppli, IIRC). The rumored Apple prediction was 400k, I think.
@Dr Blight
Apple released a prediction for sales? Link to it. Let us look at it.
Why is there a skeleton in the lower corner of the picture?
@Anatidae
LMAO.
Wow they must not be that bad at all!!
Steve should thank Engadget for making the iPad a success
The ultimate hype machine that is apple has done it again.
As for the 750k comment , i think that was for worldwide, which they beat
@ja
it's not selling in other countries yet
So all the rabid fanboys ran out over the weekend and bought the thing. Now the hard part, convincing others they should drop a stack on this.
I can see the price dropping sooner than later.
I really don't like the way Apply spins these numbers. I'm a fan of the iPad (I'm getting a 3G model when they are available), but I read in the Washington Post over the weekend that the "300,000" number in Apple's weekend press release included devices shipped to Apple's retail stores, whether or not they were actually sold (and we've clearly seen that they didn't all sell out). I'm sure this 450k figure represents the same -- heck, this could even include devices shipped to third-parties (those were "sold" by Apple, right?). Lame hypemongering.
@Jakejd
To be fair, nearly all electronics sales reports do this. The demand from retail drives these numbers.
50 million... holy shit
@appleipad
That implies 7.5 million for this quarter. Not too shabby.
@hated one
It's under Apple's estimates for the Jesus Tablet, so...
Stevie can SMD!
Those are some rather impressive numbers. No one can say that Apple isn't a hell of a marketing machine.
@ravikath no-one has.
@ravikath
never ceases to amaze me that people continue to buy things they do not need, is there a name for this condition?
@MrJimlad SteveJobsisahellofasalesman-itis
@MrJimlad It's called not being poor.
While I know that number is well below the initial estimates for the product... I have no doubt the iPad will sell well... 50 million iPhones! That means there are 50 million people (well divide that by three since they all had a 2G, 3G and then 3GS) who don't care about the usefulness of a product and just want to have something "cool".
Seriously... what was the iPad built for? As a businessperson who uses a laptop in presentations, I could see using a tablet... but it would have to run "business" programs... and BTW... there is a way larger market (and budget) for business devices than useless trendy devices... why do we? (Engadget, the media, etc) spend so much time talking about this? The iPad is essentially the GameBoy of 2010! Fun perhaps... but purely for entertainment and amusement and children! And that's not to say I don't play video games and watch movies.... but $600 is more than an Xbox 360 (which is overpriced)!
I'm a PC because they're way more useful, less expensive, customizable, you name it.
@kapryt
Yeah I love McDonald because its more grease and less expensive, but I wont be proud to shout it to the world.
So when is the 3G version coming out already?!
Pardon me there but doesn't sell through mean sold through the retailer? Those numbers shouldn't account for units remaining unsold on Best Buy (or other) shelves. Or maybe I'm just smokin' crack.
@hated one
That depends on who you ask. iHaters say it's a failure. iLovers say it's a success. Only Apple can gauge that based on what Apple's iPad sales goals were. If the iPad has sales far greater than any other tablet built, it would have to be deemed somewhat of a success. If Apple sells enough iPads to significantly raise it's revenue it would have to be considered a success.
Really, a week's sales is too soon to be judging success or failure especially since the 3G version isn't yet available. So far, the WiFi is only half the iPad product line. Maybe the 3G is is the version that consumers really want and current sales wouldn't reflect that.
