iPhone OS 4 not coming to the iPad until the fall
All that great stuff we just heard about iPhone OS 4: multitasking, tentpoles, app folders, Game Center, iAd -- okay, maybe you weren't all that excited about iAd -- seemed destined to hit the iPad this summer. Surely, right? Instead, rather than finishing with his usual "one more thing" flourish today, Steve Jobs just left a stunned audience with the terse statement that Apple will be "bringing OS 4 to the iPad this fall." That's like... a whole different season from the new operating system's release. Why Steve, why?

So sad :(
@ibransond
Hopefully the competition will have heated up by Fall.
@ibransond
I agree. I can't think of any reason for them to do this. The iPad NEEDS multitasking more than the iPhone or iPod touch.
@ibransond
If by sad, you mean awesome, then yes, it's very sad.
@ibransond
Apple kicked all the ipad users in the balls with this news... right in the balls...
At last, Jobs has Exceeded my expectations. As for the iPad fall release date, you mean the first day of Fall, Don't You Steve? (turns on lightsaber)
@ibransond This is the only thing out of that whole presentation I was not happy about.
@Lord Vader Dude, you need a girlfriend.
ipad became that much more interesting with multitasking!
@Anatidae. I had one, I don't like to talk about it
@ibransond Thought that said FAIL.... rofl!
@ibransond I'm surprised they announced it at all. I mean they just launched the thing a couple days ago, and now they're basically telling everyone that it's not as good as it will be in the fall. I guess the average joe citizen who doesn't follow gadget news has no idea of this announcement.
@Lord Vader +100 Internets on the solid reply.
@ibransond On first glance I thought the word on the slide was "fail," which is kind of funny.
@grafxguy
You can bet that the iPhone dev team was kept out of the loop with iPad development given Apple's paranoia about leaks. They enjoyed two days off.... In any case 3 months isn't exactly a long time and I doubt anyone lining up for an iPad will care - in fact they may see this as a positive. From a developer perspective, they need time to implement the new API's.
iAd though? How about iCon? Good for the developers. Where's Steve Ballmer?
@Anatidae
Engadget needs to seriously give this guy his own blog here.
They should've replaced the first "L" with "i" in the photo above.
@ibransond
That's what happens when you base a sub 0.5 million selling slate on the OS from a mobile device that has sold 85 million units - it makes it 170 times less important. The mobile device gets the priority and the slate is whenever they get round to testing the features they upscaled.
I'm looking forward to the 4G iPhone and getting some iBooks, high res camera, better screen, better battery life. Why did people buy an iPad again?
@Lord Vader Where's the "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" reply?
@ibransond yes they did! Why didn't they just give it to the iPad users in the first place? I went without multitasking for 3 years on the iPhone, but I cant imagine spending 500+ dollars for the iPad and running one app at a time. I guess that is why I am no longer an iPhone user either.
@ibransond That's what I love about Jobs, he even gives gifts to Apple haters.
@Steve2000 haha yup.. what a gift :P
@Aaquibn
This is a sign that the ipad will be left in the dark, i own an iphone ipod touch and now an ipad.... i dont want to use my iphone or ipod anymore because the ipad is just soo good but they are going to put their focus on the iphone instead of the ipad...fuck.. what needs multitasking? the iphone? or something thats suppose to almost replace laptops? come on steve we should have launched with this
@ENGADGET
Hopefully this will allow Apple the extra time to add features specific to the iPad. Notably Multiple User support. You simply cannot share the device with anyone without Multiple User support, otherwise everyone would share the same email, bookmarks, music, movies, apps, and other files. Makes it hard to let friends use it when they visit your home, let alone take it on a vacation for the family to use. I would like my wife to be able to log in with her own files, apps, and settings. Obviously the same goes for my kids. Does someone's kid need to see all of Daddy's apps, movies, and email? NO! He should be able to log in and see just his kid apps, kid movies and music.
@ibransond
I think this has everything to do with iAd. He probably doesn't know quite how to properly implement iAd on iPad yet, because he has no user behavior data and the devs haven't been focused on it long enough.
@TinWard
For the umpteenth time. Because of the larger screen. Do you own a large screen television? I bet you had one that was smaller at one point.
Reading a book on an iPad is much better than on a iPod Touch.
@Aaquibn My money says: this is so if the jailbreak teams break 4.0 on the iPhone, it gives Apple time to seal the holes before releasing on the iPad. The want this thing locked up tight.
@Aaquibn
John Gruber & Jim Dalrymple have the answers...
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/04/08/bits-iphone-live
Gruber: "The iPad, like any such project at Apple was developed by a team that was locked away in secrecy, so the team working on iPhone OS 4.0 only found out about the iPad when the rest of us did, on January 27; Dalrymple has it exactly right: OS 4.1 will be the unified OS for all these devices."
Dalrymple, in the piece linked to by Gruber, predicted a month ago to the day that iPad would see 4.1 in the fall.
Gruber is prescient, right down to the Skype and Pandora demos in today's event.
@Mister Warmth I was thinking the same thing...
@Ducman69
HAHA yeah, totally. Especially since Jobs looks really sad.
@ryanpmack lol!
Class A work choices m8.
@ibransond Why? Do you have an iPad?
@vqro why is it so sad? because i have an ipad!! and i want 4.0 :(
Lol, I thought it said FAIL on the screen. Really though, something tells me that the iPad is going to be the red headed step child of the apple gadgets, Steve pretty much said it when he said that the iPad would get OS 4 in the fall. You want to know something else? Apparently the iPhone 4 will have a whopping 512MBs of RAM under the hood, while the iPad only sports 256MB.
I'm sure if apple could, they would get out of the computer business as a whole and focus on the smart phone market and the whole sexy mobile computing device market which in my opinion the iPad is the precursor to. But as I said, apple really doesn't really care about the iPad.
My guess is that it's just a test bed for something really insane that the heads at cupertino are cooking up that we will see in sometime in mid 2011 or late 2012.
Fall? more like FAIL!
@yulebellow
*that is referring purely to the timeframe, I love everything about OS 4, that's why I'm upset about the timeframe
@yulebellow
A photoshop is required. Do it.
@yulebellow oh shut up!
@MarkAnderson
When that photo came up Photoshop was opened so quickly by so many people it probably put a drain on the national grid.
@Wolfticket http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/3656/iphoneos40373rmeng.jpg
@stueck Nice.
@yulebellow I couldn't stop laughing when the "Fall" slide came up.
@yulebellow http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/8798/iphoneos40373rmeng1.jpg
@yulebellow
That was the first thing I thought of. lol
@yulebellow
By Fall he means December 20th, the day before the Winter.
@yulebellow Really? This is the !@#$ we're up ranking now?
@RenegadeRunner
I. LOVE. IT. LOL
@yulebellow lmao, I had Windows Paint (I'm at work) open before I'd even read the article.
5 seconds later, I was ready to drop a link on here... but it looks like I've been beaten to the punch.
Ah well, at least I know I'm not the only one. :)
@Steve2000
apparently
@Wolfticket
They should have used Autumn.
