iPhone OS 4 not coming to the iPad until the fall

All that great stuff we just heard about iPhone OS 4: multitasking, tentpoles, app folders, Game Center, iAd -- okay, maybe you weren't all that excited about iAd -- seemed destined to hit the iPad this summer. Surely, right? Instead, rather than finishing with his usual "one more thing" flourish today, Steve Jobs just left a stunned audience with the terse statement that Apple will be "bringing OS 4 to the iPad this fall." That's like... a whole different season from the new operating system's release. Why Steve, why?

I personally think the iPad should of been on hold. It would have been better to release it in the Fall with the new OS and they would have had plenty of time to make sure its good to go. Right now with 30%+ (an estimate based on polls)

It's possible Apple is taking more time to further develop multitasking on the iPad beyond what it will be on the iPhone. Unlike the phone, the iPad has the screen space to display more than one app at a time, so maybe that is in the works.

Jobs did not rule out widgets on the iPad. I would wager that they are not finished with the iPad version of OS 4.

ackghh ack maniacal ranting blah blah blacgh, fragmentation!!!!! rant rant rant, iphone 3g STILL ON SALE doesn't get new software update!?!? ipad which JUST CAME OUT gets it months later. 3gs users in luck. wait, which one has the video camera? an ipod touch is WHAT?

this OS has so much fragmentation the ONLY logical CONCLUSION is that it's doomed to FAILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

Wow that's disappointing, although I felt it was coming when all the slides only showed the iPhone, there was never an example of an iPad. I have an iPad (but no iPhone) and the multitasking/taskswitching would be huge for this device. So much for one OS/multiple devices. On the flipside, maybe they'll tweak the OS to recognize the advanced hardware and screen real estate on the iPad and make some of these features even better. Maybe.

@Stanley 3 month? How did you calculate that? on the Ipad calculator?
As far i get it , it will be more close to holidays, which is at least 6 month from now. And than iphone4g will have abetter hardware than Ipad.

Wow is no one picking up on why they aren't releasing the update until the fall? It's easy to figure out, they just released the iPad in April, if they release 4.0 on the iPad within 3 months of the iPad's release, they won't be able to charge people for it and will have to give it for free to early iPad adopters, so they push back the 4.0 release for iPad until the fall and now they can charge for the update for iPad owners because its been over 3 months since they purchased. All about making more and more money for apple. I guarantee you the iPad 4.0 update will not be free.

Apple has already stated that 4.0 will be free for iPad users. They will, however, most likely charge for major updates after that. This has been covered numerous times, but I guess it is more fun for you to spread fear and hate.

@dmgabe Really, its coming for free where did you see or hear that, i heard the whole thing and didn't hear that. I own two ipads and an ipod and two iphones, but given apple's usual practice, they charge for all updates unless its on a device with a cellular chip in it, so i expect they will be charging wifi ipad owners for 4.0

A little hot under the collar Engadget? The title could've simply said, "OS 4 Coming to iPad in the Fall". Instead you put words like "not" and "until" to make it sound dirty and distant.

Patience is a virtue that, it would appear, neither you nor most of the people posting on this story posses. What's the hurry? Will your life cease to have meaning if you can't have the update tomorrow? Wouldn't you rather wait until it's complete rather than have Apple push out shoddy software that constantly crashes? They'll probably never avoid every possible bug but wouldn't you rather wait for them to test it to the nth degree to make sure there are fewer crashes/hiccups/stalls?

If it was that easy everyone and anyone could do it.

I'm glad that I will see some feature improvement in my 3gs.

But, the extended wait, reports of fail, and now the delay of getting the proper version of the OS will cause the cancellation of my 32gb iPad 3g pre-order. Maybe next time Steve-o.

I might be missing something here but it sou ds like the iPhone os is just trying to catch up with iPad right? The only things different are multitasking and ads. Are we supposed to applaud ads? Multitasking yes. I could care less about an iPad official update. I want the jailbreak! Apple made an awesome giant iPod that is gonna be fantastic when broken into. Until then it's a good portable book and movie player. I don't even use my iPhone now. I will buy an evo, get cheap ass service and wifi from sprint and then I will stop obsessing over these toys. By then I will be obsessing over new toys. Lol.

This update makes the iPad that much more attractive. Now all I need is a some cameras. And someone should make a Bluetooth keyboard that has memorycard slots so you can have some wireless way of transferring photos directly to the thing.

I see no reason for this delay, except that if they decide to add some more things for the iPad, like a freaking Dashboard like lockscreen. I'm looking forward to this update but it's lacking those widgets, for the iPad. Oh and IM multitask support ofcourse, AND iChat client.

And by the way, why is Apple randomly taking off useful functions like calculator and voice recorder of the iPad? No offense developers, I just like "the real deal". Bring it back apple, the code is already there :S

This is very annoying I just purchased an iPad And knowing I have to wait till fall. Pain, but I think I know why
Apple announced the iPad really early this year I don't think this was there original plan because there is no reason in the world to for apple to want a product cycle to be after christmas. They would no doubt want the holiday sales. Especially for a luxury product. I beleave it was supposed to be announced in the November time frame. But it got delayed and delayed. so they shipped in the new year as a comprise. Think about it they will announce a new iPad in the fall with the new update and ship the new iPad before Christmas. Just like the iPad currently does. it has a quite different os than the iPhone It will definitely have a different multitasking solution than the iPhone. why such a big delay even the core apps now have a lot of bug imagine 5 months ago. I think we will have a iPhone os event in march-April and a iPad and iPad os event in the fall. Well that's my dual penny on why it was delayed till fall any other ideas I can't think of any.

My kids are already chomping at the bit to get my iPad. If Geektronic is right and they come out with iPad 2.0 this year, the kids will be freakin elated, but iPad 1.0 people will revolt en mass with such a short product cycle. Because if given the choice I'd Definitely wait till Christmas for an iPhone with a camera, I can't be the only one disappointed by that. But as far as OS 4.0 is concerned, I'm great as long as they don't try to charge me for it.

Off the subject - does anyone know an app that will let me fill in PDF forms (not Zosh) on my ipad? I'm a realtor and this would be a big help.

so theres nothing wrong with the a4 proceror its just that apple fucked up the realease date of the ipad and the mulitasking capable software ...if it can multi task it should be able to replase some ones computer becase its not like netbooks can{muti task} they arnt supposed to be able to do that according to intel but ther runing windows7 annyway thats fuckin useless to me....yea ipad!!!!
