iPhone SDK 4 beta now available for download
Got your iPhone developer credentials handy? Then you'll want to head straight on over to the iPhone Dev Center, where you can now download the iPhone SDK 4 beta and get a taste of what everyone else will see this summer (or fall). And don't worry too much if you're not among the lucky iPhone devs, we've got you covered on all the details of iPhone OS 4 right here.

Not breaking news?
I can't believe the whole iAd thing, having adverts inside my phone now? what next? they are going to implement iAds in my macs too??? absolutely ridiculous.
@Jean,
hey, developers need to feed their kittens too.
.
@Jean
Just think of the hard work a developers put in his creation. I hope your not a developers dependant.
@WinRulez
then do it by selling apps, not invading people's personal space.
@Jean
Are you telling me such great ads like...
"Obama wants mothers to go back to school"
"I got ripped in 4 days"
"This is not a joke! You are the 10,000th visitors"
and
"Congratulations, you have just won a free Nintendo Wii"
Are not something you are looking forward to getting on your phone?
I may just buy 6 iPhones to make sure I get to see them all!
@Jean Yes I know and only Steve Jobs and Apple would try and pin this up as a feature! Especially one of the top 7 that they showed off. This will be great to developers which will keep a bunch interested in developing for the platform, but I'll stick with my Nexus One with a great notifications bar, real multitasking, install unsigned apps, etc etc etc.
@LAY
Not got a job yet?
@LAY
I know you feel furious that Apple just took away most of your talking points, and made your prediction skills look close to zero when they revealed those 450,000 sales for the iPad, but fret not, LAY, you can still make snide remarks about farts apps and Flash.
is this apple only version of engadget ?
Where can i get the normal version ?
@Steve Mobs Its breaking news to Engadget, hence the multiple posts about Apple that could be summed up in a single post
@Steve Mobs "Q: Are you concerned about leaving out your older customer base (with the lack of features for older devices). A: (Steve) Well, a lot of these products that are out there are the most recent products. The old devices will get the update, but they'll miss some of these features like multitasking. If that's an incentive for them to upgrade to a new device... terrific."
OUCH! Wow I guess Android isn't the only OS out there with a fragmentation problem, HUH! I know you spent $100 and signed a new contract for your iPhone 3G sir, but you won't get multitasking like the others, but you can always upgrade to one of our more recent devices at full unsubsidized price."
@Xtole
Yeah, I know. They forgot the "BREAKING NEWS" tag to this post though.
Cool now I can check out those revolutionary new POP UP BOXE-- I mean "Double High Status Notifications" circa iPhone 1.0.
God forbid Steve ever got off his high horse long enough to mandate that POP UPS become less intrusive like WebOS.
@LAY LOL +1 that was pretty good and I got a laugh
@Jean They can.. I don't think that iads are required in any way.
The fact is that development costs are high.. Look at xbox.. Do you think it's just by mistake that every vehicle in rainbow six is a dodge?
In-app advertising is a good option for developers.. And the customers need to be diligent and not let it get out of hand (don't get the apps that are too saturated)
Funny note: 'iads' spell corrects to 'aids' on an iPod touch.
@Nokia N900
Actually you can exclude anything you want, like these examples,
http://www.engadget.com/exclude/Apple
http://www.engadget.com/exclude/Microsoft
http://www.engadget.com/exclude/Nokia
.
.
.
just give it a try. it's fun!
@Peter Church
"I know you feel furious that Apple just took away most of your talking points, and made your prediction skills look close to zero when they revealed those 450,000 sales for the iPad,"
Ok, I guess in your attempt to seem clever, you pretty much failed to make any sense.
My talking points? Which ones are those again?
" prediction skills look close to zero when they revealed those 450,000 sales for the iPad"? I wasn't aware that I made any predictions. Maybe you are getting me confused with the folks saying that Apple would sell 1 million of these things on the first day, rather than the 450,000 (counting ones sold to Best Buy) that they sold and or "shipped".
Not my fault they blew that.
" but fret not, LAY, you can still make snide remarks about farts apps and Flash."
Oooookay. Enjoy you app ads and um...wallpaper changing. At least that 2007 UI still is rocking like it's still the Bush administration!
@angermeans
I'm glad you at least got the joke!
@WinRulez
It would be better if they changed it to "/include/apple"...
@nothingreal
You know that most iphone users aren't exactly diligent, and I understand about the costs, but it still doesn't make it ok to put ads in there, think about it, where else can they have ads in now? I know we have ads on computers but at least they don't keep popping up while you are working or doing whatever.
@WinRulez
http://www.engadget.com/exclude/fanboys,fanbois,annoyances
Darn, it didnt work. :|
@DefusedHero
You should put space after each comma.
Thanks for consulting with Engadget helpdesk.
@Peter Church lol
@WinRulez
KITTENS, KITTENS, KITTENS, KITTENS, ooop, I mean
DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS!
@Steve Mobs
DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS!!!!!!!!!!
oh wait, wrong Steve.
@angermeans
You mean there are no ads on the Nexus One? You mean there are were no ads on iphone aps before iAd?
You mean you were actually ever going to buy an iphone irrespective of what Apple offered today?
You're just a bitter Fandroid! Once Apple decides to release the iphone on all carriers, I see the Fandroid platform pretty much fading much like Windows Mobile 6.5. Fandroid best feature is that it exists on networks that don't have the iphone and comes closest to imitating the iphone experience. Watch out when the real thing appears on other networks this fall?
@Jean,
1: ad isn't mandatory, and most of the time it's only used to subsidize the price of the premium version of an app. hence more people can enjoy an app for the price of 0.
2: in-app ad for iphone has already available since the early days of the AppStore. and most of the ads are served by AdMob, which is owned by Google. it wont hurt to have another ad player on Apple's own turf (i mean the ecosystem, not the ad business).
so nothing to hate here. in the nutshell, if you are using free apps, just bear with the ads. win-win?
@jaffreywali
Weren't you guys telling us just last month that the iPhone4.0 OS was going to blow everyone out of the water too?
Here's a tip: Stop making predictions.
@angermeans
I dont understand why people everything all the old hardware should be supported.It is like saying my Microsoft office 2007 should run on my old desktop with windows 3.1
Heck even pure software product vendors who have anything to do with hardware like oracle forces you to upgrade in a reasonable amount of time. Try to get support from them on an older version and they will ask to ( pay and ) upgrade.
Atleast they are supporting 3gs which is good. The 3G customers will complete their 2 year contract this summer and will be eligible for an upgrade anyway. 3gs guys who are still in a contract will be supported.
@sycamore714
Jeez, see if you can drink some more kool-aid:
I dont understand why people everything all the old hardware should be supported.It is like saying my Microsoft office 2007 should run on my old desktop with windows 3.1
First, you don't understand why people everything?
but also, it's not at all like office 2007 on a windows 3.1 box, it's actually more like office 2007 running on a computer from 2008, cause that's when the 3g came out. It's less than two years old.
Heck even pure software product vendors who have anything to do with hardware like oracle forces you to upgrade in a reasonable amount of time. Try to get support from them on an older version and they will ask to ( pay and ) upgrade.
The key here is 'reasonable amount of time' I'm not sure it's reasonable to say that the iPhone 3g or iPod touch 2g can't multitask.
My jailbroken iPod Touch 2g multitasks right now in fact. I can already listen to Pandora while surfing the web, and I can also turn wifi and bluetooth on/off and disable screen rotation with just a simple swipe on the top bar.
Atleast they are supporting 3gs which is good. The 3G customers will complete their 2 year contract this summer and will be eligible for an upgrade anyway. 3gs guys who are still in a contract will be supported.
If they didn't support the 3gs it would be outrageous. It's less than a year old, they HAVE to support that phone and the touch 3G.
Also, at&t sells the iPhone 3G right NOW, not just 2 years ago. It's billed as the cheap way to get into an iPhone, and is often cited as one of the reasons why Palm's phones are overpriced, and for the downward price pressure on smart phones in general. It's pretty lame that they are currently selling a product that can't take full advantage of an update that's right around the corner.
Remember, you can like Apple products without buying into everything Steve Jobs has to say.
They make great stuff, but Steve is often disingenuous in his public comments. For example, I'll always remember when he said no one would want to watch video on a 2.5" ipod screen, and then Apple released the iPod Video a year later.
@rigg419,
nope, the correct analogy is it's like running office 2007 on a 2003 machine (mind you, office 2007 was released in '06). yeah, you can install it, but it wont be a pretty experience while using it.
so it's almost the same case for iPhone 3G. yes, it will receive 4.0 update, but the catch is that it wont have multitasking.
yup, iPhone 3G can already multitask if it's jailbroken, but as some can see, Apple is banking on simplicity and no-frills experience. remember the lag both iPhone and iPhone 3G faced as the OS jumped to version 3. well maybe that kind of tragedy is what apple want to avoid today, or their reputation will got tarnished again.
and let me add, the iPhone 3G internals are not much different with the 1st gen either in terms of raw power, they even use the same generation of processor without much different in clockspeed (with the chip of the 1st gen EVEN FASTER than the iPhone 3G), with same RAM capacity. the iPhone 3G itself is outdated on the first day it went on sale, so yeah, it sucks to be an iPhone 3G user.
so yeah, no matter how people complained, iPhone 3G is too weak to keep itself floating on Apple's own bar while having multitasking. that's the sole reason.
sent from my PC.
Great. Now I've got much better, more intuitive,engaging and "revolutionary" apps to look forward to.
and the torrenting starts... NOW!
@DefusedHero oh yeah baby
@kornfan
I just wish the 3G was able to do multitasking... Looks like I'm looking at a new phone. Be it the HTC desire, or the new iPhone whenever thats announced. . .
@DefusedHero if only it was that easy
@DefusedHero
Let me some the conference up for you: The iPhone has gotten awesomer. Now, for those of you who care about the last 5 letters in that product's name, please feel free to sign contracts elsewhere. We can't be bothered with how our product's main function is actually supported. We're getting paid.
@DefusedHero same here bro, I'll be waiting for the next phone that comes out. The 3G just doesn't have enough RAM and horsepower to do it. Simple tasks on my 3G like opening SMS or just getting the keyboard up for mail or notes is really awfully slow.
@steel
If only "awesomr" was a word. All I'm saying is that I'm looking into phones. I don't know what i want yet.
@kornfan
oh i have experience with that... It's one reason why i was looking at the desire. If only US!!! 1ghz snapdragon, et cetera. A lot more power under the hood, with a viable OS(android). It's all down to what the next iPhone holds.. I love my phone and would prefer not to move platforms, but alas it may need to happen. I love diverity!
@DefusedHero
*diversity
/sighs/
ADphone
more money for us
less choice for you
@liquidmonkey Just don't click on the Ads. Where's the problem?
@Vincent
well, since the ad takes up 1/5 th of the screen, i will need to click on them to hide them and its the principal of the idea.
steve sells this idea likes its good for iphone / ipad users but really its all about making money, 60% of the ad cost to be specific.
why not just come out and say he's a greedy man.
just another example of how steve and apple lock you in a cage and leave you no choice in the matter whatsoever.
so very apple.
@liquidmonkey .. Don't buy the app if it has ads. Simple really.
Ads have been around on the iPhone since Day 1 .. Apple is just centralising it and making the experience better.
yeshhh
Still gutted that its 3GS only.....If they found a way of multitasking apps without sacrificing processing power/memory, why exclude the 3G?
@commenter7
It probably requires RAM usage that the 3G doesn't have.
I am kind of pissed about the iPad -- seems kind of foolish that they would put that off until Fall, but I guess SJ is god and what he says is the final word.
@commenter7 To make you upgrade to the 3GS just before they announce a whole new iPhone in a few months. Then make you upgrade once again.
Apple likes to make you feel that you never have the best and should keep working to get the best.
