iPhone SDK 4 beta now available for download
Got your iPhone developer credentials handy? Then you'll want to head straight on over to the iPhone Dev Center, where you can now download the iPhone SDK 4 beta and get a taste of what everyone else will see this summer (or fall). And don't worry too much if you're not among the lucky iPhone devs, we've got you covered on all the details of iPhone OS 4 right here.

@DeathroW22
LOL wut?
The 3G can't handle multitasking - it doesn't have the RAM. Try it out and let me know how it goes.
3G is a few years old now. What sort of nerd has a 3 year old handset?
@suicidebob
The 3G will be two years old when OS 4.0 is released. Maybe it has the RAM to handle multitasking, maybe it doesn't. At any rate, the bulk of people who have a 3G will be eligible for upgrade at that point so it's a brilliant marketing strategy. Their old 3G goes on the used market and then there's that many more people buying apps.
If the 3G is completely capable of multitasking, well... shame on them for purposely neutering a device. At this point, however, no one should be surprised that Apple's idea of legacy is much different than that of other companies.
@DeathroW22 Well, it's working.
@DoctarPeppar Well, you always have the option to make your own computer company and then everything can be done just like you want it.
@commenter7
Try running Backgrounder on a 3G. Ya, that's why.
*YAWN*
more like WP7 features to me.
.
@WinRulez
When's that out again?
Keep waiting
i'll wait then.
@WinRulez
Yup just like WP7, except for... oh right, everything.
downlaoding it as we speak, only care about.... well all of it. hope it doesnt mess up the Nike+ like OS 3 did at first
@Sepirioth So wait... Normally in the past they release the SDK and the beta OS. This time, I only heard talk of the SDK. Are you downloading the SDK and the OS at this time, or just the SDK to test in emulation? Thanks...
@AndyTheFiredog
theres both the OS and SDK on there. Heads up, I have both a locked and unlocked iphone here in the office (you HAVE to know what the options are thats why i would be nuts to only use a locked one) and the unlocked on so far is not willing to upgrade, restore etc etc. So even if your willing to lose the jailbreak be careful. Rerunning blackra1n however does put it back to its regular jailbroken and working state.
For thos who care ill let you know once i figure this out.
Or..OR....we could condense all the Apple news today into one updated post :D That would work too.
@StrikeFear13
But then it wouldn't be Engadget if that happened.
Downloading now, my Death Star's new 100gbps Broadband system should have it downloaded in seconds, Provided nothing happens to it... (Ka-Boom)... Damn you Luke
@Lord Vader
Get a life bro, seriously.
@Lord Vader cool story bro
I'm not sure if its a sign of age but these Apple events just don't seem as exciting as they used too...
@Maserati
Probably just you're jaded, getting older, getting a bit fatter etc
@Maserati
I think it's a sign of Apple Arrogance.
@Maserati i am definitely over the vague release dates "this summer" "within 60 days"... either announce an actual factual release date or don't bother to announce anything. this is one of the things hurting MSFT, sure winphone7 looks great but when are we gonna see it available? no one knows, so no one is waiting
@Maserati
Apple's running low on "magic."
Steve Jobs @ 2007 IPhone Launch "I introduce to you the IPhone...and 3 years later, we will add in Copy/Paste, MMS, and Multitasking just like WinMo"
@IndustrialStrength "2007 IPhone Launch "I introduce to you the IPhone...and 3 years later, we will add in Copy/Paste, MMS, and Multitasking just like WinMo"
LOL. And 3 years later, the latest WinMo (WPS7) will NOT have Copy/Paste or Multitasking. How... poetic (or is that pathetic)?
@CleverB can't believe it's been 3 years already. Time flies :)
iPhone SDK 4 beta requires:
+ Devstore subscription (ok, that's a given)
+ Mac OS X v10.6.2 or later (more money to upgrade, I'm on 10.5.7)
+ Is a 2.9GB DMG
+ Requires ANOTHER license agreement update check to access it.
Sorry, but why is this 10x harder than getting stuff for Android or Palm development....
@recharged95
You only just found this out?? Are you some sort of noob?
@suicidebob
Nope, just annoyed with my slow DSL connection :(
Anyway I also noticed they've removed the 10.5.x release of the 3.2 SDK (was able to grab it a month ago). It's all Snow Leopard from now on out.
@recharged95 that sucks. Now i'll have to upgrade. sheesh.
@recharged95 .. right so you are blaming Apple because (a) your internet is slow and (b) you aren't even on the latest OS.
Sounds like the problem is less with Apple and more with you.
I was impressed by what was shown today.. does it bring new things for the iphone and its devices: yes.. anything new to the industry: nope, but it takes from very sucessful ideas and puts them together... a pause and go on, multitasking, xbox live like, user background (finally), folders... i like what was shown today..
Nice. Can't wait.
I think that Apple has figured out that you can dominate the news cycle more aggressively by having more events rather than combining multiple announcements into larger events.
Wish I could check this out :(
Wow, this OS is hardly competitive with other stuff out there. Plus, now that windows may be a real contender once again, apple is dropping quick. If it wasn't for the dev's saving the day with the 150,000 apps that add all the functionality that the iphone is missing, the thing would be worthless
@dswatson83 "Plus, now that windows may be a real contender once again, apple is dropping quick."
Whuuu--? This "real contender" needs to back pedal and add multitasking and copy/paste support to their initial release plans. This "real contender" (yet to be released) will quickly be the only modern OS that will not support some features that are quickly being seen as critical.
So... are you living in some alternate dimension or something?
@CleverB
true, I forgot they took that out of wp7. I guess android is the only real contender. Maybe this will be a lesson to Microsoft that they need to get copy/paste and full multitasking back into the os fast. I think they were hoping since apple got away without it, they could too. Bad call Microsoft
@dswatson83
You are either a Microsoft or Google employee or just a good ole Fanroid. The best feature that Fanroid or Windows Mobile has going for it is availability on networks that don't have the iphone. Fanroid wins over Windows Mobile for now because it is a closer imitation of the iphone experience....some fall and the iphone is available on multiple carriers, Fanroid will sales will start to decline as people buy the smartphone they really wanted - the iphone.
@jaffreywali
are you kidding...android is nothing like the iphone os3. Its completely widget based, allows customizing of screens, allows 3rd party UI's, active wallpapers, and a host of other things. What is similar? Iphone just has a bunch of icons sitting on the screen. If the iphone came on different carriers a year ago, it would have sold tons more. But now, there is too much competition and even more by fall (htc evo/samsung gaxaxy s)
Installing atm. I will tell you guys what its like once its done.
@MoonWalkerCTE any news bro? this guy has already installed it: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=892446
you can go get it now even if you are not a dev:

@harry20larry
would that even be legit?
:( Auto-Lock is broken and I can't keep it from never turning off...
No iPad version either :( :(
Is the OS 4.0 beta only available for the iPhone 3GS / iPod touch on the dev site, or is it available for the iPad as well?
i am surprised they haven't covered the lawsuits Adobe might file on this site
