Steve Jobs is never one to mince words when taking questions from the press, and he just made it very clear how he feels about other platforms during the iPhone OS 4 event when asked about task management:
Q: How do you close applications when multitasking?
A: (Scott Forstall) You don't have to. The user just uses things and doesn't ever have to worry about it.
A: (Steve Jobs) It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.
Yeah, that pretty much sums up the Apple Way, but hey -- tell us how you
really feel, Steve.
Ok now that was a good one Lmfaooo...I still love my hero tho
Steve's right. Now I'm gonna get back to finger painting in Sketchbook Pro.
@hated one
Cool story bro
So having a hub with a list of apps is so much more different than a task manager how?
@Kchrpm
apple's version is more limited, which apparently is somehow better?
@hated one
First learn to spell. Second, all of those OS's don't have task managers.
I want a pointed stylus for the iPad so I can take notes without a keyboard or using my finger. Tried a handwriting app and a mac employees flat ended stylus and was was lousy.
Apple is turning into sh*t, sorry.
I want to be able to close Apps I am not going to use anymore..
@MoonWalkerCTE If you're not going to use it anymore... why have it? Delete it.
@Gonzalez4995
oh wow, you missed the point of what he was saying.
or you forgot your /s tag
Seriously though, how do you close an open application when multitasking?
@rollacosta easy to do w/ my blackberry =/
@hated one Learn english before you type please. That was hardly readable.
sorry, Jobso, you blew it.
having to constantly update your hardware to catch up with the bullshit software features that should have been there from the get-go is fine with your herd of sheeple, but i'm moving to greener pastures
@lolcopter It is business, and no different than any other company. Do software designers set out to make the product perform well on every box? No, they focus on the most recent standards and hardware capabilities. If you think other companies offer better products, then fine, buy what you want, but don't blame Apple for doing something that every company does. Even Google does this with android. Not all devices will get 2.1. The G1 was a little more than a year old, and was left in the dust on future versions of android.
Do you really feel that future devices should be hindered for the sake of legacy hardware support? The more devices you choose to support, the large/more bloated the OS becomes, and the efficiency drops dramatically.
It's not a bag of hurt?
If you see an out of the box right click button. They blew it. If you see an out of the box copy n paste, they blew it. Yeah I know mac mice now have right click buttons, but how long did it take them to catch up? What like 20 years?
Is it bad that I want a task manager? I guess this is why I hate Apple.
(Bought the first iPhone the day it came out)
Keep telling people what they want Steve. Don't offer them, you know, OPTIONS. That might just confuse their poor little heads.
Not all of us are idiots, Steve.
@Electrofreak have you yelled at palm yet for forcing users to use their cards rather than some other way of managing open apps? No? I'm shocked! You may not be an idiot, but I'm pretty sure your scolding of one platform and not others makes you a troll.
@ummmwhat Shoo, fanboi.
I was replying to this article. Now go back up and read the article again. Do you see anything about Palm? No. This article is about Apple, and multi-tasking. Therefore, I didn't bitch about Palm, because it's not relevant.
Who is trolling?
@hated one
Everything you TRIED to write is fail.
@hated one
So...you bought an original iPhone that won't even get OS 4.0? And you're happy?
Not impress!! Sorry but changing my iphone for an android!!
@juancaviz smart move.
@juancaviz
Your grammar skills are 'not impress'
Perhaps you could find an english language book on android marketplace.
Where can I buy tickets to watch you eat your hat on this one Steve?
So when you have Pandora running you won't beable to stop the music unless you use the pause button?
This guy is just so full of himself.
@Caprice Dates
If I had android I could scan the barcode and be wisked away to your true avatar....
@Caprice Dates
And how!!!
@Standingfast
It only takes you to Facebook...
@Dank Dillweed
What do you mean and how??
The Task Manager isn't just used to kill applications, it is also used to monitor what your device is doing and help diagnose/troubleshoot anything that may be going haywire. We all know apps/programs aren't perfect and if they are causing your device trouble, the first and most detailed porgram to give you who, what, and why is the Task Manager.
As far as the Stylus, there are people out there who actually still use it (GASP). Handwriting Recognition, drawing in graphics programs, etc. For smartphones, yes most don't require it now.
So sorry, Steve is full of it for his arrogance as usual. The iPhone may have lit a fire under the mobile phone market but that gives this old fuckhead no right to tell who "blew it"
@Caprice Dates No No No, not "And How" like "and how exactly?". He means "And How" as "I know!"
@N900
Shoot, thanks for the correction!
@Dank Dillweed
Damn my fault homie, I misunderstood your point!
@jjrudey
Not scanning me son!!!! bwahahahaha!!!!!
Getting sleepy with all this news. I thought I saw real multi-tasking at CES 2009. You guys remember WebOS?
YAY for pretty task manager! Oh, how great is Apple making it easier for us to see ads. I pay for apps. I don't need to be bombarded with ads in it.
@bnceo I thought I saw true multitasking back in 2003, oh yeah windows mobile.
It's like with cars. If you ever see the engine, they blew it...
I can't wait until Steve Jobs starts a cattle ranch and meat packing plant. I'd love to have a self-cutting steak...
Ok, so Apple says that there won't be a way to close apps. That is because apps actually do close and their state is saved. What happens in the background is that actually the OS keeps track of the apps the user opened and presents them in a list to reopen, thus giving the illusion of multitasking. Of course, technically speaking this is no multitasking. Judging the user experience though, this will appear as multitasking...
The question I have is, how many apps can appear in this list? What would happen if a user opens 50 apps? Would they all appear in this "app switcher"?
I have nothing against this implementation but I certainly prefer to have real control over my apps...Android, WebOS and WM 6.5 do that technically much better...
Of course the user experience is another question. For most users this won't even be an issue...We shouldn't forget here who is Apple's real audience: Normal consumers that want a great user experience without being technically very knowledgeable..Fact is that power users should prefer another platform.
@petvas well put sir
@petvas
Furthermore, I like the idea of always having a recorder app available quickly when I need to record notes - even if I access it after 10 different app launches. What apple is doing is putting the control of which app you want quick access to in the hands of the iphone instead of the user. I can't rely on the recorder app always being there for quick access. I like the way webos handles multitasking - I'm having doubts about the iphone way..
@petvas
Apps saving state as you switch?
Hmmm.. that sounds a lot like OLD PALM OS! Yes, PalmOS would trigger the leave/exit calls, but you last application state could be saved (as for most 3rd party apps).
I wonder if they are being written in PDB format. That would be totally cool.
Jobs is such and fckn hot airbag.. I'll NEVER own an Apple product. He is the most despised CEO ever.. Except to his loving fanboi's.
iDouche iDouche iDouche iDouche iDouche iDouche iDouche iDouche
@Mrwirez
I hear what you're saying, but no one is going to repect your opinion when you speak like that.
@Mrwirez
if you sound off like that with no justification your as bad as all the fanbois.
infact..
it makes you..
a HATER
duh-duh-duuuuh!
@Mrwirez Ok then, bye!
@Mrwirez
Yeah... it's so much better when the when the CEO of HP stands up and says "we've got some new computers... and we've loading Microsoft's software on it..."
Or the CEO of HTC... "we've got some new phones... we've loaded Google's Android software on it..."
I'm sorry... the CEO and founder of his company isn't a douche when he is actually showing off the new stuff that his company makes.
