Netflix looking to hire 'Android video playback expert'
Netflix will stop at nothing, we say -- nothing -- until you have the ability to watch films like Failure to Launch and Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom on every conceivable device in your possession. It's hit the Wii, it's coming to the iPhone, and now? That's right, the kids at Los Gatos want YOU to help "build Instant Streaming client implementations on Android devices." Are you "a senior engineer with a strong background in embedded and mobile development, specifically on media-enabled devices," with over ten years experience, hands-on experience with media playback on the Android platform, and a knack for DRM technologies? You're in luck! Hit the source link to get started. And if you do get hired, make sure you keep us in the loop as things progress. You owe us at least that much, right?

Nice! A little late, but eh...Android FTW!
@gerrrg I just want to say "this was my idea" no really I emailed them a thousand times asking for this.
@tad604 Guess what......Windows 7 was my idea. No really!
and while you're at it mr. video playback expert can you actually make android good at playing videos please?
@skyblaze and fix the damn music player too, or at least make look as if it came out this century. Oh wait, that would be a totally different job all together.
@angermeans You want a bad ass music player? Go to the market and look at the "3" player. This century and NEXT is covered.
@Darkseider thanks for the tip on "3" music player. If only they had chosen a name for the app that was a bit easier to search for!
@debroglie It's made by "rockon" so search for that, it's actually not a 3 but a superscript 3 (cubed)
The best thing about Android's exploding popularity is that we'll hopefully start getting the big apps more quickly. I'm still waiting for the Yelp app to catch up to the iPhone's version.
I doubt my nexus will make it through an hour of streaming video without being plugged in.
@PapaSteveZ
Try flashing CyanogenMod on it. Don't know about the new NexusOne version of the mod, but not only does the myTouch/G1 version raise the clock speed on the cpu to what the chip was designed to run at, it also seemed to increase my battery life.
This assumes there is such a thing as an Android video playback expert.
My Hero disagrees.
@jonnythan Just in time for the EVO 4G ?
Wish they would have hired this guy a few months ago, so we were closer to actually having this. But, hey, excited nonetheless!
FTW!
Very soon, apps would no longer be a differentiating factor for these devices as all apps will be available for all devices (major ones anyway)...
Wonder what they would trumpet on after that? Hardware again? Apple would fail miserably in that case!
Sits patiently with his palm pre.
Actually all I really really want right now is an app for http://bedtimetunes.trash-can.net/
This right here has made my day.
Yay!!!! I think they should make a netbook version to, my 1005ha sucks at playing Netflix.
Ya where is Web OS ?
Hey if I can watch seasons 1-3 of The Greatest American Hero then I'm in.
All I can hope is that the move away from Silverlight dependencies (assuming that happened with the iPhone version — a big assumption, I know) will allow more devices to have better playback.
I have an old Mac Mini that can easily handle 720p and 1080p playback when stored as an H.264 file, but barely suffices for Silverlight (or Flash, for that matter) based video. If Netflix would allow proper embedding in XMBC and similar apps, it would make me very happy.
Not to mention, if I could dump Silverlight on my Mac, Firefox wouldn't crash every time I try to play a Netflix video on my regular computer.
BRING IT ON! This made giddy.
the question is which will come first, flash support or this app? If adobe gets flash on android we can just browse to the website and use netflix's flash player
@ryonavin Netflix online streaming uses "silverlight" not Flash
webOS? Please?
Is a two month deadline to much to wish for? just in time for the EVO launch, this would definitely be an awesome treat. i would like to watch spartacus from my 4.3 inch screen :)
@daguila29
The gods favor you for that response.
Android FTW!
This is nice, but at the same time it means they haven't even started???????????
Booooooooooooo
Methinks I need a Nexus One...Arg.
Can't wait to watch Netflix movies on my future EVO 4G!
Hmm...So Netflix will stream to Android (Linux-based), but still not to the Linux desktop?? What's wrong with this picture?
@dcornibe I know where your coming from, heck their little Roku device runs on Linux too. Its a shame it will not run on the Linux platform, but it will run on Android is going to be interesting.
@dcornibe market share? that's really the only conceivable reason why theyd do android and not linux.
Really loving the 100 Days of Sodom reference. I hope you guys haven't seen it.
I'm still waiting for my Netflix disc for the Wii...
All right Andriod Fanboys.. Get set! Ready???? GOOOO!
How about regular desktop Linux next?
Every conceivable device......except for a Linux computer. C'mon, there are tons of Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux users who want to view our Netflix movies with our computers.
This is going to make the semi crappy nexus one battery life into completely crappy battery life. I'm no apple fanboi but my iPhones starting to look pretty safe thanks to os 4.
the Luk Luk maker should apply for this. they basically pulled it off nicely ,I love that app
Netflix plays perfectly on my portable iPAD, my Blu-ray DVD player and my Wii hooked to my big flat screen, all glitch free. What more Netflix connectivity do I really need?
This news almost made me cream my pants as I would LOVE to have this on my Samsung Moment! The only issue I would see is most Android phones have crappy battery life. This will definitely make it worse I think. On the plus side, almost every device I have will have Netflix capabilities. What would be next for those guys/gals? A Netflix branded Toilet that plays Netflix? If so, I'm so there......LOL
