RED Station makes modular storage look good
ARRI may have attracted the majority of attention from camera nerds at this year's NAB show with its ALEXA camera, but RED is making a respectable showing itself, and has now introduced its new RED Station modular storage unit. That consists of a typically RED-looking base station, along with either a CompactFlash card reader module or a 2.5-inch SSD / hard drive reader, or both. Each of those modules also naturally packs an ample supply of ports, including not one but two FireWire 800 ports, and a single eSATA and mini USB port. Of course, all that doesn't exactly come cheap, with each piece of the puzzle set to run about $250 when they roll out on April 16th. RED isn't quite done with NAB just yet, however, as it also plans to show off a working EPIC camera at the show.

engadget with the apple removed....
Like an iPhone with the ads removed..... oh wait.
Their company logo looks like Aperture Science labs' logo from Portal game.
@MrJimlad Wow. Everything on Engadget is about Apple these days. Awesome mindshare, no?
This post feels out of place.
@brookey86
Beat me to it, thinkin' the same damn thing. Don't worry, we know what's coming next, don't we?
big....red....button
$250 for a CF card reader ??? hahahahaha
I bought a card reader from meritline for 79c which can read SD/MicroSD(no adapter)/MSPD/M2, it's smaller than the single module here.
YES, something on engadget NOT involving Apple...
@hdawggy See? You guys just can't stop posting about Apple, can you? And even when you're not posting about Apple, you're always thinking about Apple. Awesome mindshare.
I'm assuming all this RED stuff is proprietary? Otherwise, no one would pay that big a markup on a CF card reader.
Yes, but can the readspeeds of those 79ct readers max out a FW800 connection the way the new RED CF cards apparently can?
why is that past tense... NAB hasn't happened yet
you may also note that Red isn't exactly at NAB, either. They're in an old hotel at the end of the strip, although I'm sure they'll figure out how to get as many of their cameras and gear into the show as possible
@sydcinema Why do you hate RED so much? You were going on and on against them on the ARRI thread yesterday...
@madgamer2000 I hate their marketing department, that's what I hate. My reasons are very similar to those who are annoyed with the Apple PR machine. They both are companies with pretty decent products, but the PR gurus in both companies whip fanboys into frenzied unrealistic expectations. Their products aren't nearly as revolutionary as the machine would have you believe, and in particular with Red, they take a lot of shortcuts to minimize cost, at the expense of usability and quality in many ways.
@sydcinema
Pretty much this. If you want to read something hilarious, check out the Reduser forums. Especially the legendary DSLR killer-thread.
I also gave up on waiting for that Scarlet and bought a 5D mk II for my still and video needs.
@Terjay
That, and red camera are f'ugly; they look like childish GI Joe toys. Their whole image is way too transformers for me. And dslr killer? I'm not even going to read it. Their price / image sensor performance can go eat a d**k
