Samsung NX10 reviewed: a worthy alternative to Micro Four Thirds
We doubt you need too much reminding about Samsung's "hybrid DSLR" shooter -- it's not every day you hear of a 14.6 megapixel APS-C sensor strapped inside a mirrorless body. Aiming to best Olympus and Panasonic at the game of tempting compact camera users up in price class and SLR image quality obsessives down in weight category, the NX10 is certainly an ambitious project. But does it succeed? According to dpreview, the control layout, user interface, ergonomics, and (crucially) image quality were all praiseworthy, though the sensor exhibited more noise than they would have liked and higher ISO images lost detail due to noise-reducing algorithms. Photography Blog agreed that this camera is "an excellent first entry" into a developing market, and could only point out the proprietary NX lens mounting system and slightly bulkier dimensions than on Micro Four Thirds shooters as significant disadvantages. Check out the full reviews for some truly exhaustive analysis.

i am getting this over the 4:3
@Atkins Micro Four Thirds, I mean....
@Atkins
nope.. more lenses for m43 ;)
@Prospero 5 more coming this year. Better LCD ;) Your turn.
@Atkins
The size of this thing is more closer to DSLR than M4/3.
@techlord I think it will allow better handling (tried the GF1 and the EP-1, not so comfortable) - can I have half a point here? :) And the price is better.
@Atkins
The nx10 has horrible handling, barely any options, sucks with manual lenses and.... (and I find this hilarious)... worse high iso performance than the m43 cameras (especially the e-pl1 which is the king of image quality among them).
Funny that you used dSLR and mirrorless in the same sentence. The two are mutually exclusive.
@Nitesh But 'SLR image quality' and mirrorless are not.
@Nitesh But when you think about it, SLR stands for single lens reflex, is defined as "a reflex camera in which the lens that forms the image on the film also provides the image in the viewfinder". This mirrorless camera does not have the parallax error of a 'external' viewfinder, and what you see on the EVF is what's on the film (sensor in this case). So technically, this is also a DSLR. I see what you mean though.
@pocalvin
Never thought of it that way, but then you are still missing the "reflex" part.
@pocalvin
A nitpick: I believe "reflex" refers to having an angled mirror in the optical path to the viewfinder, not whether the viewfinder has parallax error. In the case of an SLR this is a moving mirror, but it doesn't have to be. There are twin-lens reflex (TLR) cameras like the old Rolleiflex and Mamiyaflexes that use a separate lens for the viewfinder, so they would actually have parallax error despite using a reflex mirror.
DPReview's opinion wasn't quite as good.
@grandmainger actually, I found that the low light performance of this cam to be disappointing for an APS-C sensor. Might as well go for a proper dSLR if you want the low light capability. On the other hand, m4/3's portability is better with its smaller lenses.
That is one seriously ugly camera.
@Davo
Buy a beautiful Point and Shoot. SLR cameras are not for beauty.
I'm interested in seeing Canon's entry into this space.
"proprietary NX lens mounting system" why!? I'm not going to consider this just out of this reason. Ugly design is the next reason.
@lecti, it all depends on how much Sammy is ready to pay up to Sigma/Tamron/etc for them to be "interested" in developing lenses for the mount. Considering amount of cash Sammy has right now, I think they have all the chances to push through the new mount.
My personal forecast: unless Sammy and Sony would join forces on the lens mount front, they would have trouble competing against u4:3.
What I'd really like to see is something like this in a full frame (24x36mm) size. There are some really nice sensors at that size that I could actually reasonably buy, and skipping the internal prism and mirror would reduce both cost and size.
This thing is $700 with the kit lens (8-55mm).
With it being only slightly smaller than a compact DSLR, and image quality not as good, why not just get the real thing?
A Nikon D3000 will be a better overall purchase.
I'm all for competition, but I give this NX system about a 50/50 chance of surviving long term. This camera in and of itself will probably not sell very well-- image quality is not as good as most entry level DSLRs and the size advantage isn't significant. Against Micro 4/3rds, it's just not small enough to compete.
Samsung is rumored to have a smaller model in the works (without the viewfinder), and that could be a much more attractive camera for the masses. We'll see. I remain skeptical of this company's ability to stick with the NX mount long term, in particular if sales are not strong.
@RobJ
"image quality is not as good as most entry level DSLRs"???!!
Dpreview praises the image quality of NX-10 and thinks exposure, white balance and colors are very good. It's just the low light performance which lags. In acceptable light it produces good results.
Which entry level cameras for example?
I say this is on par with Sony alpha entry levels like A2XX and almost comparable to Canons 1000D and also Nikon D3000 in image quality and even in Noise.
I'll take Oly glass over anyone else. Thank the good Lord for the 4/3rds system.
Nice try Samsung. No soup for you!
@derek533
Actually the lens is the best part of the NX10. The 30/2 stomps all over the mega crappy Oly 17/2.8 in pretty much every aspect.. The Panasonic 20/1.7 beats it (just) in absolute resolution, though falls behind in distortion, vignetting and bokeh..
So if in their future lenses (20/2.8 and 60/2.8 macro) Samsung keep the quality this high (and price this low) they will have a much better price/performance lens lineup..
@derek533
Huh? The 30/2 just as good as the expensive Oly 20/1.7, which cheats by having the camera do software correction.
This system will be better than 4/3 for people who shoot in RAW and want the extra bokeh. I will be picking one up once they make a super wide angle 10 or 12mm lens and a super fast normal.
Samsung is really a good brand.
