But really if HTC would buy Palm, put WebOS on the Desire or better yet the HTC EVO and bring it to North America with 850/1900MHz 3G Bands (AT&T & Rogers). I would have a multiple successive nerdgasms!
Is WebOS really that great? Now the app market is going to be so damn fragmented .. WebOS, Android, iPhone OS, Windows Phone, Symbian etc. Oh yeah and freakin' Blackberries too.
Forget it .. I hope Palm makes all its patents public domain, then sells its employees to google and HTC .. and the WebOS platform dies.
It won't happen, but thats the best thing from a consumer standpoint.
@genomalice Why doesn't google straight out buy Palm and integrate the software together (The multi tasking more then anything). HTC isnt a large enough company to build devices for three different operating systems. Unless they make there devices internationally launched and capable of doing all three OS's. Like having the EVO android, EVO WM, and EVO WEBOS. That way it would reduce production costs for HTC and would benefit the consumer.
@genomalice The only thing is that I don't see HTC supporting 3 OSes at the same time. I could be wrong, but going in three different directions won't be a good move.
this is a great idea. Because the only one that can benefit from giving all of this to one or all of the three largest players in this market (Microsoft, Google and Apple) are the consumers. And better yet, since these corporations, nay . . . charities, get a hold of all this intellectual property they will lovingly distribute it to everyone for a reasonable price.
it's hard to deny, WebOS is simply beautiful, and when I say beautiful I mean "the hot girl you wanna bang in the crowd, next to the pretty girl you'd like to settle with"
HTC, pushing the great hardware that it does, needs a OS that it can call its own. Windows Phone 7 just won't deliver that much for HTC. I'm not saying it's not a great OS, but like Android, it'll be pushed over many different variations of hardware. We've already seen an LG and Samsung phone for WP7, so like android I'm sure we can see "fragmentation" just like all the different versions of WinMo over X amount of hardware.
HTC, if you do buy Palm, please make it your "HOME" OS, i'm not saying taht x android device or x WP7 device will suck, i'm just saying that you're at a stage where you're doing great, pushing sales, and people are starting to recognize. As great as your entire SENSE project is, it's still being crossed over on two platforms, and you need something to call your own.
WebOS is a winner in my opinion, but don't get me wrong Android will always win my hear over.
Play is smart HTC, we're right behind you on this one
I seriously want to cry right now... I love my pre, and was so excited for there 4g offering to be announced... does this mean that the death of palm is now inevitable :_(... so sad because in my opinion(ive used the iphone, winmo, and android rigorously) webos is the best mobile operating system out of all of them :-(
If that happens, I'll shed shitloads of tears. Some of us happen to not want iPhones, and the WebOS platform would be DOA. Apple would control Palm's patents and become sue happy(ier?), and innovations would be stifled and replaced with minimalist improvements.
I don't want to become an iPhone fanboy, no offense to those who love their iPhones.
@wtgig It doesn't mean nothing yet, we wait and see. Of course, some prayers about the eventual buyer continuing to develop WebOS could be a nice idea.
@genomalice Honestly, WebOS is a killer product. With all the hardware horsepower HTC can provide, I smell one hell of a winning combination. Here's hoping.
@CDice "Lenovo better not !$@% this up for HTC." I doubt they can. HTC is not alone out there. IMO the iPhone is the best experience you can get on a phone today. But I like choice too. While I love the idea of Android, with all this fragmentation I am not so confident about where it is going, and wherever this it is not there yet (it definitely has its place though). So one of the best things that can happen here is HTC + WebOS, that can be a real winner.
@Atkins I doubt they (HTC) would attempt to support all three operating systems. If they have their own OS I'd imagine the long term move would be to move away from both WM and Android and support their own platform. If that wasn't the end goal then I don't see why they would really want to buy Palm anyway unless it was a pure patent grab.
I don't think it would happen overnight and perhaps they would still OEM hardware to the likes of Google but leave the software support to them to handle.
@daily "It's funny that everyone forgot about Nokia and they are the most obvious choice." Nokia has MeeGo, and I am a bit worried where WebOS would go with them.
@tmurph HTC can still have Palm as a subsidiary company making and selling the Palm OS to other companies other than HTC. HTC meanwhile will still be making handsets for other companies.
@Booksmart Devil I think that Apple should buy Palm, get all of their patents, and go sue happy. THEN, people will be so fed up with the patent system, that we'll get some kind of patent reform (like shortening the life of a patent, or patent officials actually looking at what they are approving) and the world will be a better place.
@genomalice I hear only HTC , Lenovo and some times Nokia/Apple. Why not Motorola ? Motorola doesn't have its own smart OS. Android apps can easily be re-written(converted/supported) on WebOS without a lot of pain(LINUX platform) HTC makes good hardware, but not reliable. Did you buy one. Use it for couple of weeks and you will regret. read this - though old , makes sense. http://gigaom.com/2007/03/20/motorola-palm/ Motorola is executing its smartphone strategy real well.... you may not like the dext / backflip/ i1 etc.... but do you realize that they are not targetting the market segment in which you are in ! . But anyways... I think Motorola should by Palm.
Actually yes .. variety can screw the consumer if there is too much of it. Stuff becomes commodity and there is little capital investment. That's why things like cement haven't been improved upon in I don't know how many decades. Why do you think there isn't major research on battery tech taking place? Technology makes huge leaps when the market is limited to about 3 players .. only then are capital outlays made to invest in large projects.
Also, from an app developer standpoint the only way to reach all the smart phone users will be to develop to multiple platforms .. if there are only two or three players, it becomes easier to invest in making a kick ass app instead of having to port, test, and support it on multiple platforms. App developers can make more money .. more money = more investment and better apps.
Imagine this.. 4.3inch WebOS device, and when you flip it to landscape mode, 2 cards show up at once next to each other because of the sick screen real-estate.. now THAT is multitasking.
@genomalice Apple should buy-out Palm. Acquire more patents, integrate some members of the workforce that aren't redundant, and politely tell Google and HTC to go screw themselves. As a gift, they can issue a WebOS update that once again sync customers with iTunes. Then they can take WebOS out behind the shed and put it down like old yeller, before incorporating many of its innovations into iPhone OS. As we know, iPhone OS 4's multitasking is closest to how Palm's is, and if the iPhone gained Palm OS 5 emulation as an app (and an SDK exception for such a monumental transition), it would still help a lot of people transition to a new platform with a future.

@genomalice If all that happens, Steve Jobs is going to have to work his ass off to keep me on my iPhone.

NUGGETS Palm! Engadget commenters will buy you. Just send checks to me guys, and we'll buy it!
@genomalice
holy shit holy shit holy shit holy shit! Do us right, HTC!!!!!!!!
@genomalice
I wonder what the selling price is going to be / what the stock is going to go up to tomorrow...
WebOS is the most streamlined OS out there.. it is beautiful and functional. The only problems with it right now are:
a) The hardware blows
b) Not many Apps
But, both can be solved by HTC and it's loyal following of intelligent albiet greymarket developers over at XDA.
@JS You are so right!! Variety has always screwed the costumer.
@genomalice

Apple should buy it before someone else even offer
@genomalice im SO excited about this! i cant wait to read whats next for this brilliant PALM!

@Smigit My thoughts exactly.

It's funny that everyone forgot about Nokia and they are the most obvious choice.
@tmurph I want webOS to be a stand alone OS and not integrated into Android. Its too damn good of an OS to be integrated with anything.

Nokia has MeeGo, and I am a bit worried where WebOS would go with them.
@genomalice I would laugh so hard it Apple buys it...
looking forward to this.

They strip it of its employees that were "traitors" to the company, and use their patents to destroy all.
