Flip Slide HD inevitably sold early by Best Buy
At this point it would have been more surprising if Best Buy hadn't just gone ahead and sold the Flip Slide HD before its official launch -- we've been getting leaked info and product shots from the retailer for a week now, and it was really only a matter of time before someone went home with one. That someone is our new favorite reader Scott Peterson, who nabbed one at the Roseville, California store for $279 and was kind enough to send in this photo and a quick video of the pocket cam in action. It looks like... a pretty chunky Flip with a slideout touchscreen instead of real buttons. We're also seeing a headphone jack in addition to HDMI out, which no other Flip has had, so we're guessing this thing is geared towards on-the-go playback as well as recording. Cute. Unfortunately we won't know what's what for sure until Cisco actually confirms that this thing is real -- and at this point it might as well just get it over with, as we're sure Best Buy is busy leaking the next model already. Video after the break.

@Spaces
*as is.
@Johnny Rockets I don't have a cell phone.
why on earth are they taking leaf's from the motorolla product design manual, its ugly, fugy, vugly (vomit inducing ugly), and like one of the previous comments, smartphones are getting better cameras (4G) why not waste your money on them, there Thinner, and better (aka have android and do more)
$280 for a Flip? I think Flip/Cisco forgot where they came from... A few less features, a little less money. Remember?
at first glance it kinda looks like a Nintendo DS...
I like it because of it well built body :)....... Jk here is what I'm really think WTF who makes a sliding camcorder are they really that cheer that they can't make it one big screen that touchscreen! Gosh!
SALES TAX! Dammit California, you're ridiculous.
wait for the price drop
So there is a 3-inch screen, but you can only use 1-inch for recording. I'm officially unimpressed. SMH.
$300? what an idiot lol
Wait, what's the sales tax rate? That seems pretty steep.
I'm still happy with my Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10.

Best Buy usually takes advantage of exclusivity to sell their products.
I got my Canon SX210 like two weeks before its official release. They were out of stock very quickly.
That is fine with me, that way some people can review them ahead of time for other people to consider purchase.
280 is crazy, plus the device is a freaking brick. I am not sure the exact specs on it, but I will not be buying this device. I just hope they update the Minohd to have more space or an expansion slot. If they made a 16gb minohd that looked like the 2nd gen, then id buy it in a heart beat.
haha best buy is getting sued
Thing looks like that samsung mp3 player speaker thing from before.
Nice that they shopped the receipt like an earlier poster requested... I still think they could scan that big barcode though and get the transaction deets.
What a waste of screen real estate in recording mode. It's not like the Flip button layout was that great to begin with, did they really need to make a touchscreen version of it?
Employee 211488 in Roseville... we're watching you.
@inimicus I never noticed they put the employee number on receipt. Lol i have been working there 5 years.
@inimicus I am pretty sure the AP Regional manager of this area is looking into it already. I used to work in the area and the person in question is...rather hard on early sales.
Well, this is a let down.
Scott Peterson of Roseville? Hmm, I thought he lived in San Quentin, CA.
Its so ugly.
Blah, does Apple have to create a product for every niche to light a fire under these other companies as*es to get them to put a little innovation in their products? I mean, this thing looks like it should've come from the 80's, alongside those ungodly large cell phones. It's ridiculous, and insulting.
Sorry for the double post, but I thought of something that made me laugh.
If a Nintendo DS and a 1985 Buick Regal had sex, this would be their child.
Flip cameras were supposed to be "cheap" and "easy to use". $279 is not "cheap" to me. I can buy a real camera (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc.) come to mind with 720P video recording capability and auto focus lenses. Unless the Slide HD can capture stills and auto focus, it's going to be a huge flop.
Idk why this thing exists, kinda seems silly. But I think there are some significant internal upgrades. During the video (when he's recording), it said 4hrs of recording, so that would mean an upgrade for the internal memory! NICE! also, have the upgraded the resolution to 1080? and how about some image stabilization?
They should have considered a mic input rather than a headphone output since they already had HDMI. A mic input would have been much more useful when you need to catch people talking. Every year, Flip keeps trying to push this on non-profits at our technology conference but what's the point when non-profits struggle so hard to look legitimate on a shoe-string budget? Non-profits may have to resort to cheap products like this (camcorders get into the thousands of dollars) but they don't want to 'look' cheap with their final product, at the same time. Cisco needs to realize this and make it have better recording functionality rather than settling with more playback functionality. Isn't that the whole point of the flip-out USB? Easy transfer? Not just consumption in the camera. If it were just meant for personal use, stop trying to hawk it to non-profits when you're designing for single-person use.
Canon SD1400IS: 720p, 4x optical zoom, optical IS, uses SD card, $250
Casio EX-FC100: 720p, 5x optical zoom, high speed recording, uses SD card, $250
Panasonic DMC-FP3: slim, touch screen, 720p, 4x optical zoom, optical IS, uses SD card $230
Sony DMC-WX1: Exmor R sensor, 720p, 5x optical zoom, optical IS, memory stick, $280
(all prices are MSRP from direct from each company's website)
So, who wants that flip cam again? At that price? The original point of a flip cam was $99 cheap camcorder.
You can't protect the associate who sold this, once something is sold in the store it is recorded by the POS and RSS systems of the company, if something is sold before street date the actual transaction is flagged and sent to asset prevention.
Not to mention...you left the associate's employee number right on there... (0211488 being the offending associate)
they send you pics of it but cant be bothered to tell you the specs of the thing?
@majortom1981 http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/07/flip-slide-hd-caught-at-best-buy-slides-into-cameras-view/ There you go!
Also; I like the cash/debit ratio :P Guess he didn't factor in the tax when he brought the cash..
Thats not true, I have a flip video camera that also has HDMI out.
"What's on mine"? P0R|\|
I can't help but thing my 12 year old would love this and I would like borrowing it. Just gotta wonder, how long until the iPod Touch has video, then he will not want this at all......
I've waited some time now specifically for this thing to come out, assuming it would be better and/or cooler than they last models. Now I'm looking at other models. This thing seems confused about what it is. Meanwhile Kodak has released a camera for half the price that can go under water...
What happened to the wi-fi that was reported everywhere last fall when this thing was first reported? I suppose its possible that there are other new Flip models to be announced this week?
This sucks.
