Eric Schmidt spreading word of an Android-based Google tablet, HP building one as well?
According to a report by The New York Times, Google's apparently looking to get into the tablet game itself. Eric Schmidt was reportedly talking up the device at a party in LA recently, saying that it would run Android exclusively -- which seems odd given that Google has been working on Chrome (a concept Chrome tablet is pictured above), but then again, we don't attend parties in LA so what do we know? Other people with "direct knowledge" of the project say Google is also hunting down publishers, operating in a "stealth mode." NY Times is also reporting that HP will be building another tablet outside the Slate, which will also run Android and has been nicknamed "the half-pint" for its 6-inch screen size (and, presumably, a feisty spirit / heart of gold). We're still unconvinced that Android is exactly appropriate for a tablet device, but if Google is indeed building its own, we're guessing we could see some tablet-friendlier software that could make Android into a true tablet contender -- how 'bout starting with the browser, Google?

it´s just a big nexus one right?
@bingster
LOL damn thats funny.
@bingster No it's a small linux pc..
@bingster
Looks more like they just put Chrome on an iPad.
@bingster .. who cares if it is a giant Nexus One. It is stupid and you can't even put it in your pocket !
My netbook is faster, better, thinner, cooler and jerks me off after a long day at the office.
@taligent
LOL, I'm on the floor
@onlymyrailgun .. they will put Chrome on it if they are completely stupid. Which I really hope they aren't. Android is proven to be fast, light on the battery and already has tens of thousands of apps.
Leave Chrome to the netbooks I say.
@bingster
LOL... "At first you think, it's just a big Nexus One, but then you touch it and WOW... it's amazing what you can do with bigger screen!"
@bingster
Just like the iPad is a big touch.
And Engadget, why isn't Android an appropriate mobile OS? You seem to think the Apple mobile OS is.
@taligent Geks do what geek do. LOL
@bingster This rumor has been around even before the slate was unveiled to the public. The video is amazing, seeing its user-interface
with some uber-capability of multi-tasking is like a "BIG F** You" to Apple. Video Impressions. http://j.mp/tablet-concept-from-google
@bingster to most of you above, 'WOOOOSH'
@taligent Geeks do what geeks do. LOL
@owen66 nevermind - hadn't refreshed in a while :)
I wonder why they're burying the lead... all the "from an inside source" info on the Courier!
According to a Microsoft employee who has seen the device, the Courier is about as big as an ordinary paperback and folds out to reveal two screens. Users would be able to take notes on the device with a pen, and easily drag and share content between the screens.
But Microsoft engineers have concerns about the battery power needed to keep the two screens going, these people said. And internally the company is struggling to identify the right market. At first the idea was to market the Courier for designers and architects, but lately the company is thinking of a broader market of consumers and so would include e-books, magazines and other media content on the device.
Microsoft engineers have talked about getting the Courier out by early 2011, though no firm decision has been made to sell the product.
@DougieBear
I'm with you I think Android would be perfect on a tablet, if an OS is great on a touchscreen then what's the problem with it on a tablet ?
@fourthletter
Android would be fine I'm sure, but wouldn't it probably be Chrome considering that will be Google's netbook OS?
@taligent LMAO, Finally someone speaks the truth on their pr0n use!
@bingster with Google Chrome OS
@bingster
No, it's going to be more "magical" and "revolutionary."
@bingster
Seems like the article was written by an apple fan?
Well, lets see Android OS is for Google the best option instead of Chrome OS, because Android already has an App Market place, at this moment Android is getting mature, Chrome OS is in diapers.
@bingster
No, it's not. And it's neither magical nor revolutionary.
But I'm sure it will be a great Internet/websurfing/TV device.
@bingster
That would be like Microsoft putting out a phone that doesn't multitask.
@DougieBear Exactly if the iphone/itouch os is good for a tablet, I think Android could do a good job as well. Im sure theyd have to tweak some things but I think its a viable option and one with lots of potential.
@bingster It's this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_NYWTkR4lQ XD
@bingster They should just team up with Notion Ink and make sure Android works perfectly on the "Adam". Google makes sure that the software works and the content providers will be more willing to back a known company like Google rather than a small Indian startup such as Notion Ink. But the hardware for notion ink is very very sweet.
@bingster The UI of this concept chrome for the tablet is highly-impressive. It also caters some multitasking ability that's pretty cool to see for real. details. Video. http://j.mp/tablet-concept-from-google
Wyy is it that Apple seems to be re-inventing everything and every other company seems to copycat Apple... :O
@Billy
Google has been gearing towards this for a long time since before the introduction of Chrome OS.
@djt
Dude they said this is an Android tablet, not Chrome OS.
@Billy reinventing is in of itself being a copycat. Sheeple...
@Kwame Nkrumah
If it runs Chome OS or Android does not matter tbh.
http://dev.chromium.org/chromium-os/user-experience/form-factors/tablet
@Hazdaz: who's copying who? that concept picture was available a WHOLE DAY before iPad. (I saw this while replying.)
@Steve Mobs
Why does it not matter. Android and Chrome OS are not the same thing and it specifically says Android.
@Billy when you reivent you are the one copying,maybe taking it next level,but the Ipad is not a wonderchild,it is a nice device but limited and especially at its cost it isjust OK ...copycatting would be making something from something that was original,making a competitive device is what you are seeing others do ,small and touch ,well that would be the latitude 2100 right.....
@Billy It seems that way because you are a iTard fanboi. The only reason Apple gets there first is because they rush their devices, and leave out critical features and do no do nearly as much beta testing on the devices as they should (WIFI radio reception problems?) If they did it right and gave people the options they want they wouldn't be first to market. This goes with everything from touch phones to tablets, to app stores.
And frankly I couldn't give less of a crap if people are claiming that Google is copying Apple. I'd rather have a device later and more complete (which allows you to load any damn app you damn well want on the system.) then bragging rights that we were first. What are you 12? Anyone with a brain would know that if a device is out within 6 months; it sure as hell wasn't copied from Apple. It was concurrently developed.
Apple may do it first, everyone else does it better for less. Enjoy your first gen Apple product.
@Kwame Nkrumah Because it has been stated MULTIPLE times that Android and Chrome are likely to converge over time. The interface is really no matter anyway because 90% of all your processing is going to be done in the cloud once Google fully realizes this goal.
@John Doe
Does it better my foot. According to the satisified consumers of Apple products they sure are doing it better than others. Apple rushing devices, don't make me laugh. The ones who are rushing are devices are the competition who wait to see what Apple has to release before rushing out theirs.
@djt
Stated by who, you?
@Kwame Nkrumah
The voice here of an iPad user desperately trying to overcome buyer's remorse.
@Kwame Nkrumah Eric Schmidt, if memory serves me correctly.
@Palpatine
Since I don't have an iPad, what makes you think so?
@djt
I have never seen that mentioned anywhere.
@Kwame Nkrumah Officially by Google
@Kwame Nkrumah
Then your hearsay about "satisfied apple consumers" is just exactly that. It's magical and revolutionary because they say it is?
@Wello
Link?
@Palpatine
Dude go and look up all the industry satisfaction surveys released and you will see what I mean, I don't have time to do anybody's homework for them.
@Kwame Nkrumah
Supporting your own comments is hardly my homework.
@Billy
"Wyy is it that Apple seems to be re-inventing everything and every other company seems to copycat Apple"
Yeah because Apple invented the tablet right, next you're going to tell me Apple invented multi tasking
@Kwame Nkrumah You don't have time to do anyones homework for them and you are asking us links for an article you've never seen? Please. This whole conversation is much ado about nothing.
The whole point why I even responded to the original post is because Apple did not invent and I was just attempting to point it out.
@Palpatine
Ok since you're lazy here:
