In a discussion with
Kin product manager Derek Snyder this afternoon, we've confirmed that both the Kin One and Kin Two are built on the same foundation as the
Zune HD -- in other words, they're running NVIDIA Tegra silicon, and there's no reason that anything you see on a Zune HD couldn't run just as well on a Kin. Of course, that's a purely theoretical statement at this point since Zune apps don't work on Kin as it stands -- the platform's completely closed, though Microsoft has been insistent that we should keep a close eye on its over-the-air updates after launch as features evolve. Either way, that's a marked (and curious) departure from
Windows Phone 7, where Microsoft's been taking an all-Qualcomm, all-the-time approach.
Realistically, we've gotten the impression today that Kin doesn't come close to tapping out a Tegra's horsepower, but that might be by design: Snyder also mentioned that a key goal of the development phase was to make sure that the phones could go a whole weekend without a charge. Running a Tegra at full bore 24 / 7 doesn't lend itself to miserly power consumption, so the overall simplicity of the UI -- and the lack of 3D gaming -- might play a role there.
@h0rk That is easy: After WP7 is ready and out, they may update Zune and Kin so that they both can get the same apps. All three are based on Windows CE. All three are synced with the Zune software.
I'm pleasantly surprised with the specs and foundation of these devices.
Too bad its not a Zune HD on the outside too...
Like, oh my god. My social networking life is going to be like so much better with this device. Kelly, come here and like, look at my new phone.
Kin 2 looks nice.
c'mon AT&T!
When I asked for ZuneHD phone I hadn't this in mind.
I don't know about anyone else, but I AM COMPLETELY FUCKING SICK of all these Microsoft posts!! How much are Engadget getting paid for this??
If I am forced to look at another MS story today, click on it, read it for a bit, then post a comment I AM GOING TO GO FUCKING NUTS!!!
I'm off to Gizmodo. They ain't biased like these Engadget shills.
(sarcasm)
@ssgadget dude watch the movies! release is May on Verizon
running NVIDIA Tegra silicon??? How come they were so sluggish in the videos?
@Keanedi cause it's not final product, btw they were not that slow
@Keanedi
yeah they were fast + Tegra 1 isnt the fastest chip in the world.
whats with the hate people? This is just a simple phone with features which the masses care about (well i admit that it does not include most people on engadget including me). It isnt a smartphone. If u want a smartphone just wait for HTC to release their WinMo 7 phones later this year.
@anispace agreed, this is actually nice phone, if it is priced good it can be winner
I don't care what you all think about this phone, i LIKE IT i like the sharing approach, and would seriously consider buying for me but i'm not 16 anymore... if i had tennagers i would buy them these in a hearbeat and monitor their pics and vids through the kin site...that zune pass over 3g cannot be beat!! SMART DJ is like Pandora and Salcker on sterioids except that you can skip music and search for music. HECK YEA!!!!!!!!
most will like it. simplesocial network capable devicewith pretty interface. more than enough for most people. Only geeks went with android.
There are multiple "Tegras". It's just a marketing name. It's like saying some guy with an Aveo isn't maxing out his capability because you once saw a Chevy Corvette do 150mph.
Just because this device isn't graphically spectacular doesn't mean it isn't using its capabilities.
People forget only like 17 to 20% of cell phones are smartphones. There is a huge market out there for feature phones yet...
Windows Phone 7 *Series*
Please get it right so we can keep laughing at it.
@robogobo
Microsoft officialy dropped the series from the name
I'm surprised at the level of phone snobiness here...
So when exactly does a phone stop being a feature phone and begin being a smartphone? Which features does it take for a phone to be labelled a "smartphone" ? A web browser? The ability to run third party apps? What?
This phone has me very interested. I don't need to spend $200 on the phone and $30 a month for the data on an Android or Blackberry. This would make for a nice upgrade over my Voyager and give me some Data and Wi-fi, and important to me, a much better touch screen.
People were whining that there needs to be a Zune phone. Now that they have it (all the internals, Over the Air Zune pass, zune's browser, plus a keyboard), they whine about it not looking like the Zune HD. It offers unlimited storage capacity, essentially making the idea of being limited to onboard memory limits a quaint relic, yet commentators still complain.
I've spent some time using the Kin 2 and was pleasantly surprised. If you want to complain, then talk about the half-ass current implementation of twitter. You see a notification from your friend within the UI, but when you go to reply, it'll drop out of the internal UI and have to reply via the web browser. Or the lackluster performance of the 8MP camera.
There's also the funny little problem of the phone not yet meeting Verizon's network connectivity test standards - which is one reason why they're not giving a solid release date.
not sure what all the hate is about. It actually looks very sleek. And the fact that it has a Zune HD built in makes it even more awesome. and a GOOD camera, good battery life, good social networking. so bascially, if you don't need this for productivity, its a perfectly good device.
fanbois delight.
It's obvious that MS didn't do enough research on what teens want. Almost every teen at my school has or wants a BlackBerry, Android phone, or iPhone.
there's a lot of Geek FAIL in these comments. If you can't understand what and who this phone is made for you should be forced to maintain a blog using a PDP-11
