Aww. poor thing... :(
I actually think NOT having the microSD slot is a GOOD thing. External storage just complicates things. I know most here do not agree, but hey, whatever.
So the device wasn't called Pink, and it didn't have a MicroSD slot.
Prank calls, Sandisk?
@aubreyq What's confusing about external storage? I cannot imagine a person who has a phone that has external storage and would be, in any way, perplexed by it.
If the world can survive the floppy disc-CD-DVD transition, I'm sure it can handle external storage on a phone - something that often time doesn't even need to be removed at all or at least with very little frequency.
@buoy
Microsoft Pink sans Sandisk
@aubreyq
Are you on crack?
Why would you NOT want to have external storage?
Complicates what?
How complicated is it to put a memory card in a slot...seriously.....
@3rdsun
SanDisk on conference of Microsoft
SanDisk: Oooooooh. You said SANS disk. Oh. :(
Microsoft: There, there. There's always Windows Phone 7--wait....
@derX "...I'm sure it can handle external storage on a phone - something that often time doesn't even need to be removed at all or at least with very little frequency."
So why even have it if you're not going to remove it that often? Just work with the 4GB or 8GB you got and you're done.
@DoctarPeppar Not complicated in the sense of putting/removing the card, but complicating the experience.
A microSD card gets you two banks of storage to manage. The target market this is aimed at doesn't want to deal with storage management.
There are other phones with external storage, this one is not for you.
@aubreyq External memory is good for transferring files between phones, transferring files from phone to computer, computer to phone, etc. Also, if your phone dies or breaks you can easily recover your data. Oh, and it's expandable depending on your storage needs. This doesn't seem "complicated" to me.
@(Unverified) Well in this particular case, you don't have to worry about losing your data, notwithstanding another Sidekick fiasco, of course.
Regarding transferring files between phones, that may or may not work if you switch brands.
I gotta say that I bricked my older N95 8GB because I dipped it by accident in some salt water. The SIM card popped out just fine, wiped down and worked in my replacement. The 8GB being embedded... well... lets just say all the photos and pics from that trip that I hadn't transferred to my notebook were lost. It was from that point on I saw (for myself) more benefits in having separate card memory. Cos you never know when you'll accidentally dip your phone into salt water.... oops!
@buoy
yea i hate this new departure from using external media. i don't understand why we can't have the option. i mean they could just equip them with a memory card when you buy it and if you want more storage you can change it out. i think my Q9m came with a 256MB card installed and i replaced it with a 1GB after i bought it.
@aubreyq
Or you like the device but it doesn't have enough store at the 8GB. Add some memory to the device and you've got the device you want. Simple enough, no?
@buoy
So like... where are you gonna stick it?
@derX No, because people always want more storage. Even with the new (and currently expensive) 32GB microSD cards, it maxes out at 40GB. Since you won't be able to please those who always want more storage, why bother including the microSD card slot in the first place?
Trust me, they're not losing THAT many sales because of this decision.
@SoCoolCurt Problems come with the external media itself.
A few phones in this category have SD slots, but the cards get corrupted because of bad coding/person pulling the battery out.
The controller for a normal peice of memory on the other hand can handle these type of things.
Dear Sandisk,
I know you're going through a hard time with the breakup, so why not come over to my place.
I got romantic comedys, 3 boxes of tissues and a 4 litre tub of ice cream.
From your caring friend,
HTC
@aubreyq Its the job of Microsoft to make something like a second external storage region simple to maintain. The user, in fact, doesn't even have to know what and where the storage is. They could, for example dedicate it to media storage only, such as your synced Zune music and videos as well as pictures. The internal storage will be dedicated to apps and any OS files. Its such a simple concept.
the simple fact is that locking the expandibility of a phone assures an upgrade path for a line of devices. If people were confused about storage cards, then no one would own point and shoot cameras. They seem to be able to work around that cruch. Assuming your customers are idiots is insulting.
@Ruben
that's what i'm saying, why can't they just use an official microSD as the internal storage and basically hide it inside the phone. that way it's out of sight and mind for people who don't need it but the option is there for the people who do. i mean once i put the card in the phone, i almost never take it out and just use a USB cable for syncing and moving files. i guess i wish it was like how the PS3 handles it, you can buy a PS3 and it comes with storage, but if you feel the need to upgrade the storage, it's a pretty simple process and you don't have to go buy another $299 PS3 (and actually Microsoft's own Xbox 360 handles it very similarly). there will probably be ways to upgrade anyway, but i doubt there will be any that don't void a warranty.
i know at least for the media centric WP7, i'm going to want more than like 16GB of storage. i have an "if it's there, i'll fill it" type attitude with my storage space and the more movies and music i can carry, the better. i just hate the feeling of having to take something off to put something on because i usually want to listen to what i took off again almost as soon as i do. i don't like manufactures deciding "what is best for me", just give me the option, hide it if you have to, and i'll decide. i think they think that most people aren't smart enough to use a smartphone but i've been using every feature of my WinMo phones (+XDA stuff) for years now.
@erik1080 this keeps feature parity with iPhone!
Who needs to buy SD cards when Microsoft can pay for all your storage!!!
@WhitecollarcriminalFinancial why don't u want bill gates seeing your butt? I mean he's the richest guy in the world, he can marry you and you will be rich too! LOL
@mikmik111
Or at least tip for a nice ass!
@WhitecollarcriminalFinancial
I'm afraid to ask, but what exactly makes these pics illegal?
@mikmik111 bill is not the richest guy on the planet anymore...hes like 2nd
@semahjiscool
Sucks for him!
@semahjiscool Well technically he has practically no money, because it's all tied up in stocks.
@WhitecollarcriminalFinancial
your buts illegal ?????????
thats got be one ugly ass you got for it to be illegal
but the last i checked you can take pics of your ass or any one eles ass
it not a crime
Hellooooo porn have you seen one
unless your in to litte girls or boys
then yes your but pics would be illegal
@semahjiscool
And i'm sure he doesn't even care! If he cared about the status of being rich then he wouldn't have become a philanthropist.
@WixosTrix I believe any nudity under the age of 18 is considered child pornography, so yes, I suppose it would be technically illegal... although not very likely to be prosecuted unless it was more serious.
@derX
im afraid to kno.
@WixosTrix Or rather microsoft wants 'you' to pay for all your storage.
@YoYo
He could be an Unaccompanied Minors. I'm Gene Shalit now! Bye!
I hate myself for that.
Lol
Poor SanDisk!
Well... maybe that's why they leaked the info...
I see no reason (unless it is very affordable) that anyone would buy this phone. Why spend the money on a data plan if you are going to use such a feature-poor product. I don't think a new UI is enough to make this phone worth it.
@IDuPree
a feature poor product with a 5 or 8 MP cam with flash, zune support, qwerty slider, full backup of everything with integration of facebook, twitter, myspace etc?
I wanna know what the phone is that you WOULD buy.
@toocou
this
@toocou Maybe a phone with an ecosystem
@IDuPree
The HTC EVO 4G?
It has like triple the features, a microSD slot, and Android.
Android > WebOS > Windows > OSX
@toocou
HTC EVO.
Or even possibly Apple's newest...
They may not have been released, but they aren't vaporware and they definitely offer more than Kin.
Besides, it lacks an app store. It is the next generation of basic phones. It isn't a bad phone. It does after all have a good battery life. I just don't think it is worth it when you compare it to some of this summer's releases.
If it really is "the next generation of basic phones", that'd be cool by me... my contract's almost up and my old clamshell is getting a little long in the tooth... though we've been through a lot together lol.
@Chrinik
How can you even compare android and webOS to Windows and OSX?
hahaha
Dealbreaker
No microSD = no buy from me.
@Toshi
Haha cuz iPhones doesn't support MicroSD either!
@xtriker360
It's supposed to be a cloud device. If you need a device with MicroSD, this isn't intended for your consumption.
