Barnes & Noble Nook now up for order at Best Buy's website
Our watches may be off by a few hours or so, but April 18th it ain't. Evidently that matters not, as Barnes & Noble's Nook is now up for order on Best Buy's website, a full five days earlier than we were expecting it. 'Course, in-store pickup still isn't available, but those who plunk down the plastic online should see it ship out within a day or so. If you're still fond of these e-reader things, and you're kosher with a few quirks, the big yellow sticker would be happy to craft a shipping label with your name on it for $259.99.

Thanks you but no thank you. Bought Kindle three weeks ago. With calibre app for ebooks conversions, I am set.
@Jimbojones
Exactly
@Jimbojones
Same here, haven't looked back since.
@Jimbojones
Jim, i work for a publishing company, the relations between Amazon and the industry are so sour you will see that few months from now some of the hottest books simply will not be available on Kindle. B&N and Sony on the other hand are making deals that will give them hot and exclusive titles.
@Sea Urchin except you miss the old school "money talks". Kindle sold more than 1.5mm kindles and are rolling strong, nook and sony are way behind, I don't need to mention Apple here (anybody bought a iBook?).
Amazon is not going anywhere. Worse case I get book somewhere else, crack the encryption and put in on kindle.
@Sea Urchin Ah. You work for a publishing company, eh? Well, you guys need to stop screwing consumers with eBook prices before people realize you're no longer necessary.
Has the nook improved since its debut? I heard its really slow and stuff, but I'm in the market for one.
@groovedafied Yeah, it has. I've never used a Kindle, so I can't compare on the speed, but compared to its initial release, the Nook improved significantly. The biggest problem I'm having right now is book selection. Best-sellers and the like are easy to find, but just about any time I think of a book I've always wanted to read or a tech book I'd love to have for reference, they don't have it.
@Swervo I had exactly same problem. I pulled all my GF books she has in the bedroom and some of new computer books I got.... almost none of them were available in B&N, almost all of them were available for Kindle.
There is very nice video about NOOK online, it was done after the update everybody talks about. Sorry NOOK, but this is still far from Kindle quality.
Im gonna buy one since i LOVE Best Buy. Much better than your trashy Wal-Mart!
@ashleythehottiest
I think you mean Target....
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/07/kindle-coming-to-target-on-april-25/
@ashleythehottiest
you like paying retail? just saying.
@Munny Swirl
No he just needs the Geek Squad optimizations
They're selling a screen optimization with this one, with their help you'll be able to use the bottom one as a touch screen and be able to read the top one in bright sunlight, ONLY WITH THEIR OPTIMIZATION THOUGH!...don't even try to do those things without it or you will be sorely disappointed.
only $79.99
@Munny Swirl LOL excellent. Best buy is for gonads who don't know their ass from their elbow.
I love the e-ink screens, but I hope it doesn't die off (or get killed off for that matter)
That's 2 posts in a row about just two random Android running e-book readers. It's everywhere.
Time to get in your shelters...
@TheGM I've got my hatchet and a first aid kit, and I'm heading for the hills first thing tomorrow morning :-)
@IVER23
dont worry theres about 20 articles coming about some apple piece of junk
@Ipadkiller
That's odd since I've Bren reading on the iPhone for the past hour, and I can tell.
My mother stares at a monitor all day and then goes home and complains when she has to read non digital text.
Eyestrain isn't a myth. Is it sometimes blown out of proportion? Yes, but it's real and is far more common than you're making it out to be.
Eh, Best Buy is the root of all evil, I'll buy it at Barnes and Noble if I want one.
@yulebellow Might as well, you'd save a buck. $259.99 at Best buy and $259 at B&N.
@Ipadkiller
I think I'd be more likely to think, ZOMG I can't read this LCD in the sunlight, and ZOMG, the battery on this LCD won't last me a solid 4-5 days, but hey, maybe that's just me.
@Ipadkiller
Congrats on showcasing your incredible ignorance!
FYI Engadget: The Nook runs much smoother software wise since your review. Linking said review is a pretty unfair representation of what you'd find in stores today.
At least it has a better price than this http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/13/spring-design-alex-starts-shipping-tomorrow/ from spring design alex oh and a better design
@blairy true, but it's still far from as quick as kindle when you refresh the screen and battery still lasts half in comparison to kindle. I wanted to get nook, then I discovered amazing conversion app called calibre, bought kindle and never looked back.
nook looks slick. i might have to put kindle on ebay and get the nook.
i wish the secondary screen was running webOS
@Jimbojones
The Nook goes 10 days with wireless off. The Kindle 14. Does that really make a difference in your life?
Calibre works with the Nook.

Thanks but no thanks. Sold my Kindle 2 on Sunday after picking up a iPad the week before.
I'm sorry, and I know everyone will argue against me but these e-ink devices hitting the market finally is too little too late. If this was a year ago I'd be all over it.
@aph3x
Thought of that too but I'll stick with an e-reader due to size. I just want an e-reader NOT a mini-laptop. I need the smaller size for biz traveling......
@blairy it's 2 weeks vacation without powercharger, NOOK is still much slower than Kindle on screen refresh (its identical screen), does NOOK support email delivery? not sure, I don't think so. There is still so much more books on Kindle, it will probably change, but still it's far from the same. I spent weeks trying to decide between NOOK or KINDLE (it was a month ago after nook got the update). NOOK is not bad, but not as good as Kindle especially when Kindle is getting new update and will support apps in next month. I got kindle and I am very very happy camper.
@Jimbojones just to add... the only reason why I wanted NOOK at the end were free books, then I saw Calibre and it changed it. I can read free books on kindle as well.
@blairy
That's BN's own fault for shipping crappy software. First impressions are important.
@Jimbojones
Not sure where you vacay, but whenever I travel in Europe I have a converter so I can charge any of my devices.
The refresh rate is pretty much identical to the Kindle. Not sure why you don't think that is the case. Nook has Calibre, so that's a non issue. Also Nook handles more ebook formats, so technically it has a bigger selection than the Kindle.
To the person below me, yeah, first impressions count, but if Engadget is including their review, it should be made clear that those views came months ago. The game regarding the Nook has completely changed now.
Unfortunately its just a little over 4 months too late to make a killing.
B&N killed it by adding that extraneous '2' right after the dollar sign.
I work at Best Buy in New Hampshire we got a shipment of Nook's about 2 weeks ago. We are just waiting on the word to be able to sell them. The best part about it is that Barnes and Nobel is our neighboring store.
Been wanting to pick one of these up. If you figure in Best Buy's average 12% montly coupon, this might be a good deal here.
