iPhone OS 4.0 paving way for Apple-branded car kit?
Apple dropped iPhone OS 4.0 on us last week in a big way, and we spent plenty of time breaking down and exploring the details. But, there are apparently a few gems left to be discovered, like dedicated support for in-car use -- possibly even with an Apple-branded mount of some sort. When put into this mode the iPhone generates a simple menu that's fed over video output (demonstrated after the break) while the handset becomes a remote control... which may or may not be a good idea as more and more states ban cellphone use of any kind while driving. The developer hooks for such functionality appear to be in the iPhone API and, while it's all rumorsville at this point, Apple would be blind to not try and cash in on the auto integration market -- even if it is a little late to the party.

Give me a moment to interface with the cars controls...
@Cortana Jerk the wheel suddenly to left or right to skip track. Horn to play/pause and turn the wheel to fast forward or rewind.
@Cortana
The word was "ship's" not "car." You missed the line completely!
=[
@grapeDrank What about using the landscape keyboard?
Yeah, you left that one out.
How about something built into the dash like double din dvd player running iPhone OS?
@dickweed
do you really want jobsey controlling your car's interface too? what next....?
@sc0rch3d We could jailbreak it :P
@sc0rch3d
As long as it's only the radio he's controlling then it wouldn't be too bad. Could you imagine if he controlled the car.. You'd have to send your car to Apple to get the gas tank replaced when you ran out.
@dickweed
That'd be awesome. For a small fee, they would replace your car.
Would disabling call functions make it non-mobile-phone device so you don't break the law by using it while driving? What's "use of any kind" anyway? Music too?
I wonder if Apple drops these pieces into their software releases so they get a week of Gizmodo and Engadget speculating over what they find in the beta.
With more head units in cars using Bluetooth, they should be able to find a way to integrate that with the UI. That way they can have a dock that sticks to the windshield like a GPS dock does. The driver wouldn't have to take his/her eyes off the road making it safer to use when driving.
@DJ Megatron
Talking of Bluetooth - I wonder if they have implemented the skip buttons in 4.0. This would make my car kit actually useful with my 3GS.
So, sorta like the Apple TV Remote / iTunes Remote app in the store.
I said it, Apple is slowly moving toward technology dominance. They will become samsung and make everything and anything you can imagine. Just you wait
@allenade You mean Android? :P
btw, the guy who is singing in the video is HORRIBLE. What a monstrous iteration of a peaceful song
@allenade
You thought that was a dude singing?
I say don't worry about what the damn nanny state has to say. Just use it in the car.
The biggest "so what" ever.
@TechBlogger
Agreed. It adds no value. Why not use the ipod as-is. The in-built car LCD screen is best used for GPS and all the usual things, not an iPod menu.
I don't see it, how is this not just a simplified outputt to a TV, how does this have anything to do with cars????
hey just wanna ask something, even though its not entirely related to this but how does multitasking work with youtube on the iphone, for eg.if i'm streaming a vid on youtube then i get a push notification from an IM app like beejive.If i were to view that IM then would the youtube video keep streaming or would it pause?..and another thing , youtube videos is only viewed in landscape mode so so would you bring up the 'multitasking dock' ?..or maybe apple might change the way push notifications works with os4?..i'm a little confused actually so can someone give some info or demo a video with iphone OS4 running youtube and then multitask?..plz reply anyone
@nipponJ I think you could apply that to all landscape mode apps. For video, I'm sure it would launch you back to the video info screen if you wanted to multitask. I don't see a movie playing in the background while you type IMs. Music, yes. Movies, no.
It would probably continuing downloading though.
Note: ALL SPECULATION
@trainwrecka o, so the dock multitasking dock can pop up during games also..why hasnt nobody really demo the thing correctly..its a beta right so i think they should try to multitask will all the (apple) built in apps for now.i have a iphone 3gs running on softbank network here in japan so i wanna kno, would that update would be for free?
The video looks the same as some of the after market systems that have a colour display and full iPod integration :-P
If this code adds support for this type of audio control to the iPhone and iPod Touch then that's great, but it ain't new!!
If someone comes out with a ipad dock for the car mounted, I will have myself a friendly crap. That would be neat. OR for any tablet, really. wicked.
No the Ipad dashboard already exists!
What?! Apple isn't late to the party! According to Steve Jobs they are just doing it "right".
@Darkseider standing on shoulders.
Can I use the iPad to replace the steering wheel?
See for Joseph, God was a tough act to follow after Mary gave birth to Jesus. And I say the same thing for WP7 (Windo Phone 7), iPhone OS is a tough act to follow and is going to be accompanied with high levels of success. MS should have left the name the way it was (Windows Mobile 7, 8, ... simple and to the point)and offered upgrade for all current Win Mo devices.. Oh well!!
I would LOVE this! I use my iPhone (possibly iPad soon) in my car 90% of the time.
Coming Soon ... untethered car jailbreak
The problem appears to be Apple when it comes to companies creating devices that control the iPod and show things on the screen.
For instance, I have a 2007 Prius and have a DICE unit. I would LOVE to be able to see a list of playlists/songs/audiobooks/etc but that doesn't appear to be possible. Not just with the DICE unit but any device you can connect to my Prius.
As for those replacement "radios" I'm not impressed at all.
It would be absolutely great if Apple would make an easy to use API for companies to interact with iPods/iPhones. It just doesn't seem to be something that Steve Jobs is interested in, despite his supposed love of Music. Maybe he doesn't have time to listen to music in his cars. And I can almost guarantee that he doesn't listen to music using an iTouch/iPhone.
Dropped their OS in a big way? What are you high? Or a third party affiliate? Multitasking? 1G cant do that...sure it can my 5 year old BB does that. Or could it be iAds wont shove coercion down your throat at a fast enough pace unless over a 3g network? Yea, every thing Steve-O says is poignant because he pauses to build the suspense of a sales pitch before dropping blockbusters like...
"With the iPhone....we can now.........................*clicks a slide of some sophmoric cartoonish GUI*........multitask...*gasp*......prepare my cross, Ives."
I for one enjoy technology....I considered iPhone after woefully jumping from BB, until I found out about iTotalitarinism sent from my iKremlin. Plus I hate the f'ing prefix.
Droid Does....sometimes it doesnt....I can admit that because I like Smartphones. When I want to get behind a flag and become a radical nationalist...I watch football.
Maaaahhhh-gical.
...and the only way Im getting behind the car system, is if a Limited Edition David Hasselhoff Night Rider Edition is offered. That awards every mile with a shot of Whiskey and Wendys cheeseburger.
Is not a car kit but a car, Apple is making a car.
Okay, if they're not making a new stereo with this then I AM GOING TO DO IT MYSELF!
By every suggestion from the things I've read, this is exactly what's going to happen in the new MINI Countryman to effect its "Built-in Internet Radio", and they said it would be based on the iPhone's significant integration into the car's entertainment hub. They also said it was the first time this has been done in any car. Remains to be seen if it's hype or really something novel.
In the meantime, I already stream Internet Radio into my car via my iPhone (w/Wunderradio).
About time. The 3rd parties are doing really mediocre job integrating the iPod/iPhone in cars (slow UI, no unicode support, no album art, etc).
That GUI looks pathetic.
@fast Indeed. It looks out of date.
Just give me 4.0 NOW!!! Pretty please...
Dont know if you were aware of this but these kits have been available for ages. at least 5 years. Dension are the market leader producing kits that fully integrate the iPhone (and iPods) into virtually all car models and brands, to show text on the screen and tracks can be controlled from the radio or steering wheel. More info can be found here http://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk
Its where i got my kit from
Indeed. Looks out of date.
