Apple haters, cherish the moment while you can. The Magic Mouse's odd ergonomics aren't exactly everyone's cup of tea -- including some of us at Engadget -- so we were more than a bit stoked when our
silicone lump from MMFixed arrived in post today. Installation was straight-forward and mess-free thanks to the small suction pad underneath, and despite the fairly strong attachment, we were able to easily slide or rotate the soft cushion on the mouse for adjustments. We've had no problems with multitouch input thus far, and the old wristache-after-prolonged-usage seems to now be a thing of the past. So yeah -- it's safe to say that this squidgy fix was well worth the $10 investment (although it has gone up to $12 now, which is hardly the end of the world). You could say that it's rather silly to fix something that's supposedly magical, but we suppose even the best tricks could stand to be improved.
jeez now i want marshmallows. who else wants marshmallows?...
@skyblaze
Me !
@skyblaze how about 'em s'mores....
@skyblaze
I'll take a bag of that. Thank you!
@skyblaze
hmmmm, a mouse AND a snack?!
Is this heaven?
@grapeDrank or ( o Y o ) XD XD Hi I'm 12 today.
@skyblaze
funny how people would rather keep a "broken" Apple product and try and "fix" it than just get something that works better for them.
@grapeDrank
"...you know the ones that supposedly turn (.)(.) into (. )-( .)"
Should have called it the iRack.
@skyblaze Leave Apple to change things purely for the sake of change. What's next? Square wheels for you iMobile?
@NikAmi
Nope. HTC already snatched up that patent. Sorry, Apple.
@skyblaze looks like some strange birth control device.
Magical? Dude its a peripheral input device.
@slipdisc I like that down-to-earth attitude.
Magic is a stupid myth, it does not exist. The force on the other hand is completely real and present in our universe. Hence Apple should have called their Magic mouse: Force Mouse and their iPad tagline should have been: A revolutionary internet device that is strong with the force. Not that stupid magic crap
@slipdisc Is that Kyle Gass?
@slipdisc I think the magic part is that it works without wires?
@slipdisc
Yeah but what's magical is that only some people struggle to make it input stuff which is a big step up really from most Apple input devices.
Anyone else find it ironic that the company that delivered the mouse unto the people has such a hard time making one that just works.
@Cy Starkman Sorry not to be funny but actually it works really well.
@Lord Vader
what if Vader was real, and this guy actually IS Vader. That would be pretty cool Vader on engadet.
@slipdisc :p apple never liked the idea of a mouse
and now they are calling it 'magical' djeezezz i hate Apple always brainwashing the dumb people :p
they use silicon for computer mice too? i hope it has the same feel if u know what i mean..niceeee..
@unknownsolo
Yeah can't wait to get my hands on a pentium processor when I get home...
@fais
With this lil thing?
Id need like 40.
@unknownsolo
There might well be some silicon in mice, but I think you're more interested in the siliconE.
Yuck.
Just use a $13 Microsoft 3-button scrollwheel mouse with your Mac. Hey, I do.
@0android0 Doesn't sound very comfortable... I personally prefer Logitech's Gaming mice, they are the most comfortable for extended hours on the computer imho.
@Vdek It's not bad.
At work I use a Wacom Bamboo w/mouse.. not bad either but more expensive.
@0android0:
Exactly, Apple needs to stop making mice. If this is what you need to do to make a Magic Mouse usable, Apple failed miserably. I'm using an extremely old wireless Microsoft optical mouse with my mac - it works great.
the good thing is that this gadget overlays the apple logo /s
im no apple fanboy, but i'm sorry i just have to say that this lump looks like a tumor grown out of the back of the mouse....
@kongmw it's naada tuma
@kongmw
a tumor on your mouse is better than carpal tunnel in your wrist
@rekit Or maybe.. just get a mouse that actually has a better form-factor? The things people do to get an Apple product sometimes. -_-
@kongmw I've been seeing that "I'm no Apple fanboy, but..." lately. I'm going to use it everytime I comment on an Apple story from now on.
@rekit if you test this mouse in the Apple store b4 you buy you wouldn't buy it at the first place - hence no tumor on your mouse and no possible problems with your wrist. If something has an apple logo on it - it doesn't mean you need to buy it.
@rekit
Incorrect. Ear on a Rat trumps ALL
http://bit.ly/cYjrxB
@kongmw
...and I'm sure it will never get dirty.
Great, now mac-haters are going to crap on this article's comment sections.
As for the mouse, I'm a designer and I prefer mice without that big bulge you guys slapped on. I use my fingers to move the mouse around, not my wrist. So the mouse is designed for that type of movement, bulky mice are too difficult to move precisely.
@Kid Red
If you're a designer looking for precision, you might want to try a Wacom.
@Kid Red
I'm not an "apple hater" but I sure as hell hate their mouses (mice?). I personally don't think they've ever made a comfortable one. Most of them look great and futuristic for their time, but every one back to the hockey puck were crap for ergonomics, plain and simple. The Mighty Mouse was terrible. No contours at all, basically guaranteeing wrist strain.
I love Apple's design, I really do. I just wish the mouse designers would consider that people need to use them for extended amounts of time. Then they could look nice and be nice and comfortable, and I wouldn't need a Logitech or Microsoft mouse to go with the Mac on my desk.
@iA
LOL we still have those hockey puck mice at work -- those are the biggest fails EVER.
@joe23521
Well said. What serious designer uses a mouse these days? I don't even own a mouse at work or at home anymore. Wacom all the way.
@Kid Red
Designers don't use mice, they use tablets. Just admit you're all about the style and you're willing to suffer Apple's lousy mouse and keyboard ergonomics for fashion.
I'm a designer and use Wacom, Logitech and Microsoft devices.
@joe23521 I've had two wacoms, but their mice jsut end up wearing out the surface. I'd love the have the $2k touch monitor beast but I wouldn't get the use out of it to justify the price.
Not all design is done with a tablet, I'm not doing illustration.
Man the mac-haters/mouse-haters are out today, voting me down?
Reminds me of the round mice for the 1st gen iMacs that people needed third party extenders for. What a joke.
Buy a regular no name made in China $10 mouse and don't fix what ain't broken...
@viper111 as if magic mouse wouldn't be made in China.
So you have fixed something magicaly beatifull so it is now magicaly ugly?
Why would anyone buy so cute mouse and do this to it, why would not buy normal (far cheaper) mouse with better usability, if you do not care about that cutenes
I cherish this moment!
