Apple haters, cherish the moment while you can. The Magic Mouse's odd ergonomics aren't exactly everyone's cup of tea -- including some of us at Engadget -- so we were more than a bit stoked when our
silicone lump from MMFixed arrived in post today. Installation was straight-forward and mess-free thanks to the small suction pad underneath, and despite the fairly strong attachment, we were able to easily slide or rotate the soft cushion on the mouse for adjustments. We've had no problems with multitouch input thus far, and the old wristache-after-prolonged-usage seems to now be a thing of the past. So yeah -- it's safe to say that this squidgy fix was well worth the $10 investment (although it has gone up to $12 now, which is hardly the end of the world). You could say that it's rather silly to fix something that's supposedly magical, but we suppose even the best tricks could stand to be improved.
@ECH
I don't know what it would actually do, but I think it should resemble Steve Jobs... and it wouldn't do Flash.
@ECH
I think you meant "touché".
Uniboob WTF!
Who the hell rests their palm on their mouse? I'm using a MS optical wheel mouse and the only part of my hand that touches it are my fingers.
What's wrong with just designing products for humans from the outset?
@koehler83 , No mouse fits that requirement. Only machines you can touch, talk to, and be seen by, would fit that (human interfaces). So iPhone. That is really the nature of any tool; we use it because humans aren't always as precise as we need our work or product to be. It will be a while before we eliminate the keyboard, and mouse. However, then we really begin to delve into robotics, and AI, in order to make computers interact with us, the same way we interact with each other.
Hasn't this been posted before?
Or have I just seen it on techradar?
I was using one of these at Best Buy the other day and I couldn't figure out how to right click without completely lifting my index finger off the surface of the device. Does this mouse really require everyone to completely change the way they hold a mouse or am I in some bizarre minority who rests their fingers on the mouse buttons at all times?
@Chefgon , technically, all mouse use requires you to learn how to do it if you actually want to avoid hurting yourself. Ergonomics isn't synonymous with lazy. People don't seem to have a problem learning to use new TV remotes when the replace the old TV. I don't see why technology should halt innovation just because people are slow.
well I always liked mine just fine as is.
Any mouse that needs a hump like this to make it comfortable is not magic, it's a fail.
Do you guys really not understand the simple idea of not resting your ENTIRE hand on the top of a mouse??
Microsoft and Logitech have developed a nation of heavy handed mouse users that need to rest their whole hand on the device.
I fidn it so strange, i've used Microsoft mice for years and the magic mouse is so light and easy to move around, my palm never touches it. Definitely a better way, and its got to be more ergonomic to move something lightly with your fingers rather than your whole wrist/forearm
Why are you encouraging Apple haters? Is blatant stupidity a quality you'd like to see more of in the comment section on your site?
@Jack
The design of that mouse is blatant stupidity
@ECH
See what I mean, Engadget? See?
Now if Adobe can fix the scrolling in InDesign with it, it'll be the perfect mouse.
ITS NOT A TUMOR! (schwarzenegger voice)
You don't have to be a fanboy to hate the magic mouse. It's an unergonomic piece of crap that makes my wrists cringe, and I actually like a lot of Apple stuff.
@Faceless Troll, Ergonomics isn’t about being able to rest your hand on the mouse. Ergonomics also has to do with using things correctly, like not resting your hand on the mouse and keyboard. That’s why they make pads, and wrist rests, because some people are too lazy to actually hold their hand up like their supposed to. The Magic Mouse is quite ergonomic; I suspect it is largely the users who aren’t.
@Ice Cream Man
Resting the hand on the mouse with your palm while not moving it is ergonomically the best thing to do, as it takes strain off the wrist.
In fact, the exact link you keep spamming here discourages wrist rest use for mice...
So, am I the only moron who read 'wristache' in my brain the same way I would read the word 'mustache'? HA!
I'm not quite sure what a wrist'ache even is.... But I gave myself a nice chuckle.
I use apples, and I've always hated apple mice. I use a razer naga, which has 17 buttons.
@s1lph
Jesus that is a lot of buttons. Do you ever get lost?
How does apple keep making such terrible mice?
I must be honest; this is the stupidest product I have seen in some time. To start, any discerning shopper would go to the Apple Store, or Best Buy and test the mouse out, see how it feels, maybe even do this a couple times before buying it.
Now as for mice; seriously!? There are a lot of mice to pick from. If after having determined, you do not like the interface on the magic mouse after evaluating it pre-purchase. Maybe it’s a good idea, not to get it! Even the MacPro doesn’t default to the Magic Mouse. Moreover, I really fail to see what the problem is unless you’re in the bad habit of resting your hand on your mouse. If I rest my hand, I tend to rest it on the pad, or wrist rest, not on the mouse.
Maybe a person wouldn’t have to “fix” their mouse if they actually put effort into both using them correctly/ergonomically, and finding one that actually fits them.
@Ice Cream Man
Resting your hand on the mouse can't be a crime. Besides, some of the best mice are sculpted to let you do so. There's no right or wrong way here -- obviously not everyone uses the mouse the same way as you do, including myself.
Anyhow, the "fix" is there if people want it. I was close to selling my Magic Mouse that came with my iMac, but then decided to give this fix a go. Before this I've been using several Logitech mice.
@Richard Lai , You are wrong! Moreover, it’s people like you who don’t think, and circulate stupid things like that, who tax our societies intelligence. For a point of reference, here is a link reviewing proper/ergonomic mouse use;
http://ergo.human.cornell.edu/cumousetips.html. It’s only a matter of how lazy, and uneducated one likes to be. It's a fact that there are correct ways to do things.
@Ice Cream Man Man, you should try to read and understand the article in your link before wildly flaming around...
I use a mouse pad with a wrist support, then use my fingers to move the mouse, I've never used this mouse before but it seems in that sort of setup it would be pretty good, without this addon.
Nooooo! You've turned Magic Mouse into Magic Tit. (Just fiddle it with two fingers and it'll make your browser go backward and forward.)
A a much better concept was posted way back in october last year,
http://www.99.se/attachments/kringutrustning/23729d1256839270-traden-om-magic-mouse-oktober-2009-magic.jpg
The MMFixed version just plain looks awful.
why can't Apple make a good mouse?
Can't fix this stupid design of a mouse. You can only replace it with an appropriate mouse. i.e. MS, HP or Logitech mouse. Chicks might dig it but it's way too small for a mans hand and without a tactile feel, it makes using it cumbersome. They could keep the swipe feature, for what that's worth, but it seriously needs a wheel.
@TechBlogger I don't think this needs a wheel at all -- it supports kinetic scrolling.
My two Logitech mice's wheels lost their scrolling smoothness after half a year of usage.
