Motorola Backflip now scheduled to get Android 2.1 update in Q3
Decide to go with Motorola's unconventional Backflip over an Android phone with a more traditional form factor? Then it looks like you'll have to wait a bit longer than most to get the Android 2.1 firmware update. According to a newly published timeline from Motorola itself, the Backflip is now scheduled to receive the update sometime in the third quarter of this year, compared to the second quarter for the CLIQ and now-ish for the Droid -- the Devour upgrade is apparently still "under evaluation." Of course, all of this can still change and, given Motorola's past history with Android updates, it probably will.

I bought the backflip because i really liked the Android platform, i was stuck with AT&T and my unlocked G1 was getting a bit long in tooth. It isnt a bad device. The software IS old, side loading 3rd part apps is a pain in the arse and the phone sucks battery like a bum sucks down Mad Dog 20/20 when data is enabled. Despite these short falls it is a decent device and for Android-o-philes its the only option (short of an expensive unlocked other device of choice) till the Dell Mini 3 and other HTC devices hit for AT&T in late May/early June. The only real lament i have is the loss of the free Google Maps navigation of 1.6 in my switch from the G1. other than that i fairly happy with the Phone. Perhaps it is not as cool as the Almighty Droid and the Nexus One but one step at a time. AT&T is slowly weening itself off of its IPhone dependency as its exclusivity contract comes to an end.
You all need to be patient. I am an ATT subscriber as well with a blackberry looking to go onto Android and am waiting for some more devices before making decision. No desire to stay with BB or go to iPhone. Can't stand Apple and want flash-capable phone.
There are several Android models coming to ATT shortly:
The Dell Aero (formerly known as the Mini 3) coming this quarter:

Also strong rumors forthcoming are that the LG "Aloha" horizontal slider is headed to ATT slider next, along with the HTC Desire and Legend.
Good things come to those who wait. I'm willing to wait for Android. This backflip after reading more reviews is nothing to sneeze at, and if it had OS 2.1 now - I'd probably pick it up now - but unfortunately only 1.5. Oh well.
Should be an interesting summer. :)
Meanwhile, I suggest for those on twitter doing a search for #android for the latest news on ATT releases.
Wish me luck!
