Well, it's taken quite a while since its
debut at CES in January, but Viewsonic has now finally managed to get its 23-inch VT2300LED LCD TV out the door. While there's not exactly a ton of stand-out features here, the side lit LED backlighting does apparently help to deliver energy savings of 30 to 50% over traditional LCDs, and you'll get some decent specs all around, including a full 1080p resolution, a 5 ms response time, an ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner, and three HDMI ports, among other standard fare. What's more, while this one has a list price of $399, it looks like some retailers (including Amazon) are already selling for it as little as $299.
Looks good but it's unfortunate that it's not an IPS panel.
@Velorium Yes 5ms confirms it is TN
@Velorium
You can get a 1080p CCFL 23" IPS from NEC for the same price.
@DrDr Is that an actual TV though, with tuners? Or just a display?
@DrDr
Model number?

@Velorium
Why the IPS obsession around here? LCD's with TN panels work just fine, you don't need the utmost of color accuracy to view engadget.
@dez
Why pay the same price for inferior technology?
And even if IPS is slightly more expensive, you're already dropping 350 bucks. Put out the extra 50-100 dollars and get an infinitely better monitor.
TN panels have poor color reproduction, and (more importantly IMO) poor viewing angles. If I'm watching movies, I can deal with the colors, but if I want to watch something with a friend, I'm screwed.
THAT'S why we want IPS panels.
this might be me being stupid here, but how is this on the home page?
Surely this should only be on engadget hd....?
As I said, I might have missed this, but they look like nice displays, but that's it...
I don't think I'll ever buy a monitor again. Between laptops and tablets I'm covered.
@mobilehavoc This is a Television (that could be used as a monitor if you so please)
@gadgetfanboy
lol, throw some tuners in those gadgets and he's good to go =D
@gadgetfanboy doh. I saw Viewsonic and lcd. Who would buy a Viewsonic tv anyway?
I can see myself getting this.
No IPS, no Deal, unless it's an OLED ;)

because we all need IPS panels to view engadget and play games. obviously. Oh, i'm sure you're some kind of graphics designer as well, in which case, good luck affording it.
@dez
Yes, view this site on a large TN monitor, then view it again on a properly setup IPS (or other) monitor.
THEN tell me you don't need it. It is glorious.
(currently viewing on a calibrated HP 2475w)

Can you help a brother out?
What is the difference between the two screen formats?

@dez
You don't NEED an IPS monitor, just like you don't NEED a Blu-Ray player. You can browse the web on a TN monitor just like you can watch all your movies on DVD, but you won't be experiencing the full image quality.
I was wondering when this would come out. Sweet!
