Apple issues software update for new 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros
Apple would seem to have been optimizing its code in the time between sending its latest MacBook Pro models into mass production and yesterday's launch, as we've just come across a software update for the brand new 2010 laptop models. Specifically aimed at the 15- and 17-inch machines -- which differ from the 13-incher with their Core 2010 CPUs and automatically switching graphics subsystem -- the patch is aimed at improving "graphics stability for high-performance video and gaming applications" while also squashing a variety of bugs. That hardly sounds like you'd be in danger if you didn't update, but we'd still advise swallowing the 258MB pill just to keep your aluminum-clad investment safe.

@Sweet Dude
or discrete graphics...
@Sweet Dude
When Microsoft releases a 0.25gb patch to fix a "few issues" there will be a post about how inefficient they are.
@Sweet Dude Apple hates the 13 it appears.
@Sweet Dude That will come when/if Intel allows nVidia to create a custom chipset.
@Chris Dunning
That is exactly right. The problem is that Intel's integrated graphics suck. So Apple, instead of going with an i3/i5 and being forced to use Intel's integrated graphics, stayed with the C2D and were able to use nVidia's 320M instead, which is much better.
@Sweet Dude
Yeah, serious. That's okay, I'll get one anyway. It's a laptop, who wants to lug around a bulky 15"? Anyway, to get the 15" with proper spec (high res screen) you'll be paying $1900+ instead of $1200. Awfully big premium for a bit more screen.
Because updates like this wouldn't come from "Linux Inc." or "Microsoft." Due to Apple's products solely coming from Apple, the hardware and software; it is more news-worthy than a typical Microsoft Patch Tuesday (security fixes for Office, Windows) or whether or not Linux's open source video driver got updated or not.
@Jban False :P
@Ipadkiller Whether or not a certain news item is "great" or not, is a matter of personal opinion.
@Jban
I agree with ipadkiller,
to let everyone know, I installed a new video card driver AND razer driver today.
@Ipadkiller I like apple, i just want to see a fair spread of postings on all updates. i mean like ipadkiller said, less then 100 people have them, and prolly less then 1% even read engadget daily.
@troy polamalu .. and where are you getting your statistics from ?
Engadget is a BUSINESS that makes money from articles.
They are not going to post articles about topics that their readers aren't going to click on and read.
@Ipadkiller "20 people"
Wow, kinda condescending aren't we?
Just took an informal survey of one thread at MacRumors and I counted no fewer the 25 confirmed purchases within the first 3 pages. There were 111 pages total. I know of a guy who purchased four for his business yesterday. I'm certainly willing to bet that first days numbers are in the hundreds. While a hardware refresh may not be a big deal for HP or Dell, because they have a hundred different models, there are a lot of people who use Apple hardware professionally and update every few cycles.
@Ipadkiller
'noone'
what's that about
@Ipadkiller
And I'm sure someone with a name like "Ipadkiller is a reliable source of information and insight. MacRumors is hardly an Apple fanboy site. As far as the communities evaluation of Apple's products, business practices, and other general thoughts regarding Apple, it's pretty balanced. You, on the other hand, seem to be looking to pick a fight and have no interest in an actual, thoughtful discussion.
Sorry, that should be "community's" not "communities".
I doubt Engadget are suppressing other news to bring you this article, just be glad you can give your finger a break from constantly hitting F5.
So yesterday it was a story on an Apple port adapter. Today it's a minor software update. That's some great tech reporting there, folks.
@WOPR
This isn't a news outlet, it's a tech blog. Suck it up, princess.
@Jack Is that supposed to somehow make the articles more relevant?
@WOPR
Do you just not know the difference between a news site and a blog? Complaining about what Engadget chooses to do articles on because it's not "great reporting" sort of indicates you don't know what a blog is.
But since you seem to be confused, the reason this article is here is because it's a software update for machines that were just released yesterday. See, it's a contextual thing, not just an article about a minor software update by itself.
Now stop complaining. If you don't like what Engadget writes articles on, then you can either go somewhere else, or if you don't like Apple stuff, you can use http://www.engadget.com/exclude/apple.
@WOPR
You're bummed. Oh well.
Is it just me or is Apple getting the "Microsoft" bug? They have increased their market share, but bugs in the code are showing their ugly face. Could the QA department at Apple be slacking due to demand?
@sigwo:
Complex software contains bugs.
Stop the fucking presses.
@michaspi I'm not digging at Apple, just bringing up a point that Apple fans have used this to throw mud in Microsoft fan boys' faces for years. I have an iPhone and a MacBook that needs updating due to owning for over 2 years and thought the post would help me decide when to purchase a 15" model.
@sigwo You might consider it's good that they stay on top of this stuff, and address most of it quickly. Updates are part of every software system, at least the good ones.
So is there a driver for integrated i5/i7 intel graphics in there? Has anybody seen a way to get switchable graphics going on a hackintosh?
What kind of integrated graphics are they?
@Mitch
The 13" has the nVidia 320M, the 15" and 17" have both Intel integrated graphics AND the nVidia 330M.
13 inch or 15 inch, hesitating..............
@exsonic 15"
@exsonic
If you get the 15" you need to go with the high-res screen to justify lugging around all that size and weight. And then you're at $1900 instead of $1200 for the 13". It's a shame about the proc in the 13" but I'm not sure it's really going to prove to be that much slower than the i5. It just seems like CPU advancements are slowing down again, just like last time Intel was the only game in town, back in the mid-90s.
My desktop is 4 years old now but it doesn't seem remotely dated. *shrug* C2D is fine for a laptop unless you really have money burning a hole in your pocket.
bold design...
I like how so many people are complaining about this when what was it less then a week ago they were talking about windows 7 sp1.
It's not an investment, it's a purchase, there's a difference.
mac gaming...
that was a joke, right?
@artshark Hahahahahahaha. Yeah, Mac gaming. Who ever heard of that. It's not like there've been any recent developments on the Mac gaming front or anything.
http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/03/steam-mac/
why didnt they just drop the price on the 13 instead of doing a pretty pointless update on it?
