iPad international launch delayed until the end of May
Uh oh. Looks like all that US popularity has taken Apple by surprise and the European arrival for the iPad will be shifted back from the earlier promised "late April" to the end of May. Citing more than 500,000 tablets sold in the first week of American availability, the Cupertino brain trust urges its international audience to look forward to May 10, which is when availability and pricing for the rest of the world will be specified.
Update: Rogers has come forward and confessed that it'll be offering the 3G iPad "from the end of May in Canada," though it's keeping monthly price points close to the chest for now.

@garbowza
not sure what you mean by "locks down" this market. imo, the better they are the more encouragement it gives to competitors to innovate. also, there's lots of innovation just on the iPhone platform alone, thanks to 3rd party developers. i'm not sure if apple have a stranglehold on the smartphone market but even if they did, i'd be a happy customer just because of the apps that are available to me as a consumer.
@vanglorious I agree completely that Apple will provide much of the innovation in this space, as they've done with the iPhone. I just think that the market will be better off if Apple can be challenged with some legitimate competition.
Spain is part of Europe too, you know?
@Alphadan No it isn't, neither is Ireland or Portugal.
@Alphadan
Looks like Russia's slipped in there!
@Funderful Yeah, and apparently, Russia is... Maybe because the poster is Russian or something? Uhmm
@Alphadan
Maybe they want to solve WiFi and Overheating before international launch? By the way adding some Dual Core NVIDIA TEGRA 2 processor, USB ports, WebCam and photo camera, Flash support, Less expensive apps, Double Display (color and ereader) and enabling 3G phone calls, SD memory?
Oh No, I think I am talking about the Notion Ink ADAM or the ICD Gemini
Reporter: Why is this?
Steve Jobs: We don't want to take the apple store down every day
@Beatnik
Looks like Engadget thinks Australia is also part of Europe.
@MasterRothschild
Supposed to sell 700,000 according to who?
@lexitu
My friend Australia IS NOT IN THAT MAP.
It shows Europe and North coast of Africa. I am not that bad in Geography
@Alphadan Apple should cite how many of those 500k units WERE RETURNED by people thinking they could scalp them and by people who thought they could play Farmville from their Facebook but got a blue lego instead.
@MasterRothschild 700k was a Wall Street analyst's prediction, not Apple. And Business Insider admitted that he seemingly pulled that number out his ass.
Remember: This thing is a self-described luxury item, not something people need, and a new kind of device (unlike an actual video game system).
It'll be interesting to see whether items like the Slate or other tablet computers will sell 500k its first week.
There are no TVs in Yurop. No iPads either, but we do have dragons, according to popular belief among americans.
@Kwame Nkrumah
Google is your friend!

"The 300K figure that Apple mentions is just about half of the 700K estimate"
@xolan99
Dude of course they won't.
@Alphadan

@MasterRothschild
That wasn't from Apple genius, that was from one analyst, try again.
@Alphadan And on a macro level, Asia, Africa, South America, Canada and Australia are part of the world too, you know?
@MasterRothschild
There was no 700k estimate. Out of dozens of armchair "experts" predicting how many sales would occur, one person made up the 700k number and lo and behold, they didn't sell 700k in one day. That doesn't mean the sales failed to meet estimates, it means there was 1 guy who pulled a number out of his that ass haters can point to for validation.
@Alphadan They're trying to include a sliver of all the continents. Except South America and Australia.
@YpoCaramel Whatever.
@Ryan Trevisol
And Central America?
It is interesting, nobody talks about these little countries below Mexico, but above Colombia: Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panamá.
And the Caribbean Islands: Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Curazao, St. Thomas.
@Beatnik
Forgot jamaica
@Alphadan
No love for Ireland?
@Alphadan
So let's break this down.
Prior to launch news stories were telling us that Apple manufactured well over 3 million of these things to meet demand.
YES estimates from Wall st. folks, which at the time were reported breathlessly, said upwards of 700k to over a million were going to be sold in the first days.
Apple still has plenty of these things left over from reports of people that went to buy one.
Apple then says international launch is delayed...because of the "popularity in the US".
And Engadget doesn't scratch their heads over this and instead just reprint the PR and say NOTHING about how this doesnt make sense?

@Beatnik
Ah of course but go to the apple aus website and the same thing applies - late may.
@Lundmark That's Americans with a capital 'A'. Like God you capitalize such an important name. Team America...Fuck yeah!
Sucks for the Apple faithful over there. They might actually have to by some type of slate or something.
@LAY
Microsoft's shill is here, he is unhappy with this news! How are your tablet PC's selling, tell Ballmer to tell his partners to keep making them.
@Alphadan
For those who have never seen a map. Spain, Portugal, Ireland are in Europe. And big part of Russia is also in Europe. Actually 78% of russian posulation is in Europe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Russia
Give us this day, our daily flamewar =|
@Kwame Nkrumah
LAY is probably shitting his pants right about now....he can't deny the numbers.
After all that denial and bashing.
Its funny how he wants people to stop attacking the MS Kin One and Kin Two yet he has no problems trolling the Apple posts.
How about this LAY? You stay out of Apple Posts I won't go into MS posts or android posts? DEAL?
@lexitu
Well, you have an interesting point, from a marketing point of view Continent frontiers is not that important, more than that is to start selling on DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, and that includes almost all European countries, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan.
An example of what I am talking about: Here in the Country of Panamá, every new iphone model is late almost a year after it is released. We are not an important market for apple.
Of Course Australia and Europe are a VERY IMPORTANT Market for APPLE.
@TheLondonExchange
Don't mind that hypocrite. He'll be the first one trolling on Apple related posts but say anything negative about his employers in Redmond and dude is ready to burst.
@Alphadan who cares. spain will be the next country (1st was greece) who will need our (german tax payer here) money to survive...
@N900 That just made my day, thank you.
@Kwame Nkrumah Kinda like how you're the first trolling on the MS Kin posts, eh? And if I'm not mistaken, you have a problem with nearly EVERYONE here making their criticisms of this device. You're about the last one here who should be crowing about hypocrisy.
@N900
Show me where I was trolling on the Kin posts, show me anything concrete. Where do you see me complaining about bias like that dude does daily, dude is so wrapped around this conspiracy against him and his employers in Redmond from the world media it's not even funny. He feels everyone is against them, dude needs help, lol.
@Alphadan
Why is anything Apple related "Breaking News"?
@Alphadan http://www.ipaccessories.org/ipaccessories.gif
@LAY
I don't have a huge stake in this, but it would do you guys (Apple Haters) to read Apple's press release. The press release mentions pre-orders.
"We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April. "
That tells me that much of their launch stock were 3G models and are now waiting for pre-order shipments. I truly doubt Apple made more than 500,000 for launch. Estimates from late 2009 stated that Apple requested Foxconn to make 300,000 tablets a month.
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20091007PD225.html
But whatever, continue with your trolling. It's entertaining.
@N900
Kwame hasn't even been in a single thread about the MS Kin!
I'll admit that I HAVE. But I haven't been attacking it just because it's MS. If it were Apple's device or Palm or Nokia or HTC it would still be an fuck ugly phone with a terrible UI design and terrible overall concept.
The Kin will fail because it just doesn't stack up when compared to phones like the LG envy, the rumor, rumor 2, samsung exclaims, moments. And lets not even talk about the Pre, Pixi, cheap Blackberries, nokia phones, and YES even the iPhone 3G which can be bought for around $100 these days.
ALL OF THESE PHONES are better alternatives to the Kin from MS. And they are not all made by Apple.
Furthermore it's not just Apple supporters who are perplexed and astounded by the Kin. Stop acting like its only the Apple supporters who find the whole UI to be messy and cluttered. Plenty of people on all sides of the debate do not think the Kin is a good idea. And more importantly do not think that they will appeal to tweens...
@xolan99 I doubt any other tablets will sell that much in first week. However you have to keep in mind that Apple could have sold just as many iPads even if the device did nothing. 300 k is about the number of ultra Apple fanbois in NA who'll buy everything without questions asked as long as it has that Apple logo at the back. We'll see more meaningful numbers soon enough. 300 k sold in first week isn't that great if you only sell 100 k during the next 51 weeks.
@TheLondonExchange
I don't think there's been a time where he hasn't made a point, and a good one at that. If he's bashing anything, at least he's doing it intelligently. Wish the same could be said for most. *looks at you two*
@Doorey
So if there's 300,000 ultra Apple Fanboys, who will buy absolutely everything that Apple puts out, then why doesn't every Apple product sell 300,000 on launch? How do you explain AppleTV then?
@TheLondonExchange Well that's because most of his comments got deleted (oops, concrete!) The only comments of his that didn't get the editor's axe were these http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/12/microsoft-kin-one-and-kin-two-announced-windows-phone-roots-wit/
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/12/microsoft-kin-ui-walkthrough/ (a reply to you was there, but your comment got baleeted *sad face*)
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/12/microsoft-kin-one-and-kin-two-first-hands-on/2#comments
Secondly, I don't really care about the Kin as much as I did on monday (nor do I think that Apple supporters are the only ones making criticisms on that thing).
@Doorey
It's 500,000 son.
@MasterRothschild If any of them have been returned unwanted, I'd be happy to buy them all off Apple at retail price. I'd then sell them throughout Yorup, including Russia, Egypt, Iraq, plus all other Yorupeen countries show on the map in the image.
@SFR
I just love how they never really look at what anyone says and just respond by calling you an "Apple hater" or a troll!
Funny though, as much as the LOVE to say I'm doing that, it seems that the real trolls, example from last night "Grape Drink", are Apple fanatics, and are the ones that constantly have to be kicked off. Other examples are Quix, Paul Chapel, PAC Man.
But yeah, the phantom league of the so-called "Apple haters" (i.e. Anyone not a raving Apple zealot) are the ones that are making Engadget so terrible.
