Strax iPad SoundSleeve prototype case rocks a NXT flat-panel speaker, little else (video)
We've seen NXT flat-panel speakers applied to everything from cars to laptops to gallery art. Now the audio tech has been smartly applied to a first generation prototype iPad case from Strax. The iPad SoundSleeve features a 3.5-mm plug and fold-out stereo speaker exposed when propped up on a table for landscape viewing. The obvious design flaw is that the speaker is facing away from the viewer. Better than the stock iPad speaker, we guess, especially if you hate bass. Look for it to launch around June for an expected $69 commitment. See it in action after the break courtesy of our brethren at Engadget Chinese.

Surround sound please someone...
@Miakandogadget
That playlist looks like something Steve Jobs woud dig!
quite a neat idea.
@jpm
Why? If you were somewhere where you actually needed a good loud speaker, I'm sure "portable speakers" would be a much better idea. This stinks of gimmick if you ask me.
@tobsmonster2
It's neat as it saves you carrying around separate speakers. It is a good point though that your unlikely to need speakers for your ipad when you'll manly use it in public places where headphones will be needed,
could be used in the park though or in a hotel room.
I would prefer it if they just wrapped up the iPads in black refuse bags, much more appropriate:)
I can just imagine this being the next boombox........not
@stoney1973
Yes, this would look equally as stupid being carried on one's shoulder...
Nice concept but not the right product.
Let's put a rear view mirror up here too folks (and a dispenser unit)
Solution: Offer two models. Speakers should fold out from both sides (split in middle, one for landscape users, other for portrait users). Most popular would likely be "Landscape" model. Even in when used in "Portrait" mode, they can have top face user and support it much like a freestanding photo frame (fold-out stand on back cover).
perhaps if one owns Two iPads, you could strap them together and use them as headphones? Then you could use your iPhone as a remote?
@stoney1973
Living the dream my friend.
Well they say it is still a concept so we'll have to wait and see.
There is a chord for the sound... That should be changed to blu-tooth.
I still wonder how it will be powered... AAA batteries? from ipad? ;;;;
"The obvious design flaw is that the speaker is facing away from the viewer. Better than the stock iPad speaker, we guess, especially if you hate bass." --Actually, bass frequencies are not sensitive to direction. thats why you can put your home theater sub woofer anywhere and it still sounds good. its the high and mid range that will suffer in this speakers case. ive never messed with flat panel speakers tho
LOL hate bass. Hahahaha. The joke, noobs, is that it's really hard to get bass out of NXT technology speakers or speaker pad stick-ons.
However, for a whopping $17 those NXT stick-ons you can get at that geeky-thinking website CAN in fact be placed in an appropriate place to sound good enough. My wife and I used them behind double-doors (one on the sweet spot on each door -- they were in asymmetric locations) in a laundry closet when we lived in an apartment, and hooked up to a Bluetooth receiver we could walk into the house and press play on our phones to get sound that was good enough to enjoy.
You really have to work with the placement, though, and find the exact right spot for your particular application.
Bad Design, Bad Implmentation too... Why wouldn't they use the dock connector on the bottom to get better sound, then you wouldn't have to have the headphone jack plugged in at the top and could switch over to headphones if you wanted. This reeks of cheap.
this is perfect! I HATE bass. something about those low wavelengths give me the willies. like they're up to no good.
Medicated Pete?
