Samsung, Microsoft work PlayReady DRM support into upcoming devices
The reality of PlayReady's ability to extend DRM'd media across devices still seems to be more theory than reality (just ask Nokia) but if/when protected content wants to stay that way, Samsung hardware will be ready. The first of the company's products with Microsoft's DRM scheme baked in are expected to ship this year, with an expected migration from the old Windows Media DRM wrapping up across all product lines by 2012. We're still dreaming about sliding content access from Zune to Galaxy S to Media Center PC to our remote and back, and will remain secure in our cryosleep chambers until it comes true...

Excellent news!
I'm not sure what all this means however...
What happened to playforsure?
@Extinction It was renamed to PlayReady ;-)
Zune 1080p smoothstreaming video on samsung tv's would be pretty sweet. If only they could convince the studios to lower their prices I'd use it as my primary movie service because the quality is very good.
Sweet, DRM? Really? Just what I've been asking for! Oh Microsoft, you DO listen to us.
@mullingit0ver : Pretty much all Zune Marketplace songs for purchase are DRM-FREE, so Microsoft has listened in that regards.
I doubt PlayReady is meant for that. I think it's to extend subscription services (aka, content you can use for awhile, but isn't yours to keep...) to other devices rather than content your purchased and intended to keep for sure.
why stream video from a device that's in the same room as your TV? Especially from right in front of it? Just plug it in.
Yes i know the reasons why you might. It's rhetorical frustration. Trash the DRM
And what if in a few years Microsoft abandons this DRM scheme aswell? Fool me once...
Who the hell cares about this...Nobody wants to know about this crap!!!
Why not make up your mind, you are either going to push for DRM all the way or drop it for good. Most of us don't like it anyway so why keep feeding us crap that we don't like at all
@hero785 But it's good for you! Just look at Ballmer's excellent physique!
... Oh.
More DRM!
Ew drm. Good thing I haven't paid for any digital content in years...or ever actually! :)
ready to get burned again oem's?
Microsoft don't know what they wanna do! They tried this a few years back & it failed. Why are they repeating failed attempts. Seriously MS y'all not a bad conpany but y'all tend to make some stupid decisions.
@Leroysboy DRM is not "rights", unless it mans taking them from you. It's the studious that insist on it. Take a look at any other video service. Other then Apple devices, where else can you play your iTunes purchase videos (yes, the PC is "Apple device" as long as you have to play it through iTunes).
I will never purchase a DRM device. It's just too restricting of things I like to watch / listen to. It's great for the money-grubbing movie studios/record companies though.
Why the hell would ANY consumer support DRM????
@JakeInDC Ignorance is bliss... to Microsoft.
Silverlight going into CE entertainment devices and now this. Seems like Microsoft is making a bigger play for your Home. Media Center 2012?
PlaysForSure [Windows Media Rights Manager] has been replaced with PlayReady. You can transcrypt a license of a WMRM managed file using a PlayReady server though.

I don't like DRM either, but I think this is more or less for media RENTALS (aka subscription services). You don't own the media, but just pay a small fee to view it once, or pay some more to have access to many titles in the company's collection (Zune Marketplace?), or maybe it will be ad-supported to be free. Either of those options aren't meant for you to keep the media, thus the reason why DRM is there to ensure a person doesn't keep using the file past it's due date.
Now for content you do buy and intend to keep, that should definitely NOT be DRM'd.
I'm thinking by fall, Microsoft is going to have some nice video rentals on Zune Marketplace...
Say it with me:
DRM WILL NEVER SUCCEED.
DRM WILL ALWAYS BE BROKEN.
DRM WILL NEVER SUCCEED.
DRM WILL ALWAYS BE BROKEN.
DRM WILL NEVER SUCCEED.
DRM WILL ALWAYS BE BROKEN.
DRM WILL NEVER SUCCEED.
DRM WILL ALWAYS BE BROKEN.
When will these IDIOTS learn?!?!?!?!?!?
So us PlaysForSure people are screwed again? Seriously, how about trying to make everything compatible rather than deliberately breaking it with the likes of Zune and this.
Nevermind DRM, where do I find that remote?
Right. Microsoft Plus DRM Equals GINORMOFAIL. When a company f-s up something as bad as Microsoft did PlaysForSure should not give another try. Just means alienated early adopters or even not so early adopters, and a bad taste in the mouth for anyone who knows anything ABOUT DRM.
If it's anywhere near as unreliable as PlaysForSure apparently was, it will be nicknamed "PrayReady" in, oh, about now. ;)
