Okay, okay -- so maybe
Compaq's Presario CQ1-1020 is good for a
little more than just browsing the world wide web and sending the occasional email, but there's no denying that this one's aimed at the "casual user." Outfitted with an Atom D410 processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory, Intel's GMA 3150 integrated graphics, a 160GB (7200rpm) hard drive and dual-layer DVD burner, the all-in-one isn't exactly cut out to handle
Crysis. Furthermore, it ships with Windows XP Home Edition, though we are delighted to see that 802.11b/g/n WiFi was tossed in alongside the Ethernet jack. You'll also get inbuilt speakers, a 6-in-1 card reader, eight USB 2.0 sockets and enough bloatware to keep you busy with uninstallations for at least 10 to 12 minutes. It's listed for the low, low price of $429.99, but that little "check back soon" message means you can't order quite yet. Bummer, bro.
Not a bad price... and yes my grandma has some intense Email sessions.
She can recharge her pacemaker via usb with this baby.
@Miakandogadget
+1 LMAO
@Miakandogadget So my laptop which I use as a main workforce for cross-compiling is now considered for grandma's email sessions. Since when did grandma's start cross-compiling packages?
@bazookafx3 I think compaq came to the game pretty late. Lenovo and Asus Eee had a similar product last year.
@tommy2468 Wanna know why your supposed to click the 'reply button'? To REPLY. Don't reply to my comment just so you can be first on the page.
@bazookafx3 Agree, an all in one PC with that kind of price? I say, it could be great, Reacions-- http://j.mp/compaq-cq1-1020
Lol I used to have a compaq, but they suck. Even 400 bucks is too much for this piece of crap.
1 GB ram needs 2 GB ram, and need 1TB Hard Drive then alls perfect
@OCEAN CLAK
Don't forget to ditch the Atom processor and throw in at least a Core 2...
@PlatinumSkeet
While we're at it let's add a PCI-e port just in case we need more graphics power...
@Maurizio Don't forget to add Blu-Ray...
@Firehazel Blu-ray? Ditch the 18.5 inch screen and replace it with 22 inch or larger...
Well, not for me but could be a good disposable Garage computer for just looking up parts and listening to music.
@incendy
i could definitely see that
Lame, why not buy a laptop? Desktops are dead.
@mobilehavoc
Laptops? What year are you stuck in? Just get an I-pad!
/s
@mobilehavoc Laptops are not desktop replacements. Tell me what laptop has an atom CPU and 18.5 inch (or larger) display.
I do not think desktops are dead but you can buy a way better laptop/desktop from dell. I personally love desktops for in home use. But I do not trust the build of compaq computers. The specs on this thing sucks! I am not a techie but eww..
Mm. Cheap plastic that will break no less than 2 days out of warranty. Just like my previous C700 series laptop did.
Compaq needs to die in a fire along with all these other cheap-y manufacturers that take a bazillion shortcuts making these things and making it a PITA for us to repair ourselves.
@dragonfli
Why are you expecting an all-in-one to be easy to repair or upgrade?
Beginning users shouldn't have XP any more. Windows 7 is way more secure. It's too easy for a novice user to get in trouble with XP. 7 is also easier to use. It's embarrassing that HP would try to foist XP onto my grandma.
@zingerhill
My guess is that this machine with the specs it has (such as screen size) was not eligible for the cheaper versions of Windows 7 Microsoft has been pushing for netbooks and would have had to be shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium (which would have cost more than Windows XP Home)
This post has brought me full circle, as just a second ago I was staring idly at a Compaq Presario (330 MHz CPU, 32 MB RAM, 6 GB HDD, Windows 2000 Professional), which I am literally using as a doorstop. Maybe it'll be a small server someday.
@JPeak You can use it to host your MIDI files!
I think I finally figured out what I would take an iPad over. I find these all-in-ones much less useful for my needs. Now, I still wouldn't get an iPad but if I had to pick between that and this all-in-one I think I would take the iPad hands down.
Do you know if this is touchscreen? I am looking for a cheapo kitchen appliance but has to have touchscreen for recipes
We get a CQ1-1020 in Q2 2010?
i don't own this machine, but i have to say i love compaq machines. cheap, capable, reliable. i've owned a presario cq61 laptop for six months, never had any problems. that said, i do thinks it's insane for HP to stick XP on a new desktop, that'd be a dealbreaker for me. just by the compaq tower desktop, they're not that much more expensive, even with a monitor, and you get windows 7 and better specs
