Canon EOS 7D firmware kills the magenta phenomenon
We thought the vast majority of our EOS 7D's image problems were over, fixed in November's firmware, but just to nip any final nuances in the bud, Canon's released another update for the DSLR that fixes, among other things, "a phenomenon in which vertical magenta-colored banding appears in still images taken in movie-shooting mode." And here you thought your MGMT concert footage was just naturally that stylish. Download via the source link.[Thanks, Daniel]

Man... don't you just hate magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode.

An essay on magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode
Are you sitting comfortably? Underestimate magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode at your peril. Indispensable to homosapians today, it is important to remember that ‘what goes up must come down.’ It is an unfortunate consequence of our civilizations history that magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode is rarely given rational consideration by the upper echelons of progressive service sector organisations, many of whom blame the influence of television. With the primary aim of demonstrating my considerable intellect I will now demonstrate the complexity of the many faceted issue that is magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode.
Social Factors
Society is our own everyday reality. Upon Peter Pinkleton-PishPosh's return to Britain he remarked 'class will refelect the inner hero' [1], he globalised an issue which had remained buried in the hearts of our ancestors for centuries. While deviating from the norm will always cause unrest amongst ones peers, magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode demonstrates a coherent approach, something so lacking in our culture, that it is not recognised by all.
Of paramount importance to any study of magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode within its context, is understanding the ideals of society. Society is powered by peer pressure, one of the most powerful forces in the world. As long as peer pressure uses its power for good, magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode will have its place in society.
Economic Factors
Increasingly economic growth and innovation are being attributed to magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode. We will begin by looking at the Inter-Spam model of economics.

magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode
There is no longer a need to argue the importance of magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode, it is clear to see that the results speak for themselves. The question which surfaces now is, how? Recent studies indicate that the annual military budget will continue to follow magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode for the foreseeable future. The financial press seems unable to make up its mind on these issues which unsettles investors.
Political Factors
No man is an island, but what of politics? Contrasting the numerous political activists campaigning for the interests of magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode can be like looking at magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode and ones own image of themselves.
One quote comes instantly to mind when examining this topic. I mean of course the words of the uncompromising Demetrius Lionel Forbes Dickinson 'political change changes politics, but where does it go?' [2] Considered by many to be one of the 'Founding Fathers' of magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode, his words cannot be over-looked. To paraphrase, the quote is saying 'magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode wins votes.' Simple as that.
One of the great ironies of this age is magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode. Isn't it ironic, don't you think?
Conclusion
We can conclude that the magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode has, and will continue to be a major building block for the world in which we live. It collaborates successfully, invades where necessary and it brings the best out in people.
The final say goes to the award winning Whoopi Beckham: 'I demand magenta-colored banding in still images taken in movie-shooting mode, nothing more nothing less.' [3]

Firstly, not funny. Secondly, that's just spam. GTFO.
@Sogeking GTFO
The firmware kills the magenta or adds C,Y and K phenomenons?
@Atkins Ok, downrank me... I need a coffee.
@Atkins. I need your help Commander, an imposter by the name of "Lord Vador" is putting comments around engadget. People are mistaking him for me. I wont downrank you if you help me put a stop to this menace.
@Lord Vader Where is this lowlife? Let the hunt begin!
@Lord Vader It is ridiculous how the Rebels' strategies lack originality and are so easily revealed. They insult our intelligence!
@Lord Vader Found him. Lying heavily minused. Added one more minus for good measure.
@Atkins. Good work Commander, but I fear he will strike again
Good work commander, but i fear he will strike again
@Lord Vader Then the Empire will strike back!
@Atkins I like where this thread is going
They shall do no such thing after I force choke the real Vader and assume my rightful place as your Leader!
@Lord Vador
Can we ban this fool? Wait no, can we ban all other Star Wars role players except for Lord Vader? Please? It's really annoying.
@JW. You would serve well as a Leader of the Empire JW, I agree with your proposition
I just bought a 550D, and the maximum frames per second rate I get for video is 50, but I've seen videos recorded at 60fps on the 550D, do I need to get a firmware update for 60fps, or is a NTFC/PAL difference?
@DangerRabbit It's a NTSC/PAL difference, you can change that in your camera.
@DangerRabbit When you're in video mode on the top dial, go into your menu (Button next to display) then change your video recording mode from PAL to NTSC and you'll be able to grab some 720p at 60fps
@Philip Han
@leebioni
Thanks heaps!
Probably T-Mobile Germany sued them.
I'm not updating...
I haven't had a problem yet whatsoever.
What I do want is freaking ISO limit. I'll admit I'm not pr0 enough to handle Aperture/Shutter Speed AND ISO all at the same time especially in a fast changing environment or when doing time-lapses where I can't touch the camera or prefer not to change anything.
I'd love to set my camera to have minimum ISO 100 and maximum ISO 800 or so when I do a time-lapse, since I don't mind the shutter shooting through the roof. I hate when it goes ISO 3200 and stays with a 1/? shutter instead of going into the seconds for smooth light flow.
I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with mine. When I compare it to my 40D the 40D has a slightly higher dynamic range. Which I'd really expect the 7D to beat it there.
@Baconbits Dynamic range can be influenced by settings such as Contrast and Saturation. Were the standards for these identical in your tests? The deeper question might be "did Canon change any 'standard' spec between the 40D and 7D?"
Do you see a difference between RAW files, too, or was that where you first detected a difference?
@BuzzMega I've still got to do some solid comparison tests on settings etc. It's just when I look at the pictures I just know something is not right. I'll figure it out.
The second last sentence was brilliant.
This magenta thing is said to only affect cameras that contained V 1.2.0 firmware. I think the only source of V 1.2.0 was from production run installs for a while. I've never seen anything like the "issues" claimed as image flaws with the 7D. Not that they're not there, it's just that they seem to be that rare.
Come on Canon, give me audio level controls for my 7D! Let me disable AGC!
@Eugeen Indeed. I would love the upgrades that the 5Dii just got.
@ Everyone: Have you seen any problems with the upgrade? Is it safe?
MGMT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Just updated mine. The update seemed to take longer than the last update on the 5D Mark II.
