Is this the
iPhone 4G (or
iPhone HD)? There's no way to tell for sure, but these photos which made their way into our hands certainly do a convincing job of making us think that's very much the case. Apparently the phone was found on the floor of a San Jose bar inside of an iPhone 3G case. Right now we don't have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn't booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It's not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it's certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.
There may be a chance to get some more face-time with the handset, but we wanted to get these photos to you guys ASAP. Stay tuned, we're working on more details as we type -- for now, enjoy the gallery below!
Update: As a number of observant commenters and tipsters pointed out, this looks almost
exactly like a Twitpic posted by TUDream on February 20th, which we're throwing after the break if for whatever reason the source link goes down. It's low-res, shows an indiscriminate bit of the inside, and some mysterious button / possible SIM slot in the middle of the other side. The mic holes on this pic seems to be larger, too.
Here's a clue for you all. Before the industrial design of a product is finished, companies often produce pre-production units that contain the electronic components/chips in a standard, no-frills casing so that software can be developed for the device. This looks like a standard prototype casing that probably holds the guts of what will be in the final product. But the external design will most likely look nothing like this.
@MobileGeorge
you seem to have the same idea as me, it is probably just a mule, with all the 4g gubbins inside it. I hope it doesnt look like the pictures, cus it looks like a piece of slate, and with all the cases and accsesories made for 3G and 3Gs? a huge case/body change seems unlikely
The only thing I don't understand about this story is how the device left Apple headquarters anyway. If Apple is so secretive with their devices, then why would they let their employess take prototypes home from work? Shouldn't they require their engineers to keep this crap at work, and disallow them from taking them home? This guy had to be breaking a rule of some kind by just having this thing on him... Am I the only one who sees this???

Holy crap, to summarize: Twitpick.com, gizmodo.com, engadget.com looks like Steve Job has defecated some of his "reality distortion field" magic dust on you and your readers again. The man is annoying and brilliant both at the same time.
Its amazing how many of you doubted apple made this because of the "seams" which turned out to be a next generation antennae design :P
@gracefulspammer
who would have thought that their "next generation antenna design" would turn out to be an epic fail? They lost two generations rather than gained a new one... So... :P back at ya.
No one found this by accident!
This was marketing by apple to promote there product for free!
It was left there on purpose and it was setup to be sold to Gizmodo!
Clever Apple Monkey
But seriously, could it have been?
I come from the future -- That is the iPhone 4. What Apple will proclaim is a "new and improved" antenna will turn out to be the opposite--it will drop your calls if held incorrectly. Apple will deny the problem, make up excuses, and then provide you with a free bumper or case to counter the poor antenna design. I hope this helps you all in deciding whether you should buy one. See you in the future.
