Report: iPad grabbed 0.03 percent of all web traffic in its first week on earth
Yesterday, when Apple announced it was pushing back the international launch of the iPad until the end of May, high demand was cited -- over 500,000 units delivered, it said. And today, we've got a report out from NetApplications that indicates the iPad might be quickly making inroads with users. Over the first week of the device's public availability, the report says, the iPad nabbed about 0.03 percent of all web traffic. For comparison, the iPhone averages about 0.51 percent of traffic. This number nearly matches web traffic for BlackBerrys in March -- 0.04 percent (Android grabbed up 0.07 percent, as did Windows Mobile). Of course, NetApplications tracks only a sampling of website traffic to gather its data, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for longer term trends.

Pretty nice if I don't say so myself;)
Still hate the iPad though;D
@JonnyB Do you have an iPad? If so, I'll gladly but it off you.
However, if not, how can you be so passionate about something you don't have?
@Ruthless
I can tell you have a iCrap:]
So em I right;D
@JonnyB
If its under 0,1 they blew it!
@Ruthless
you can be very passionate about something you don't have, do not have VD but i hate it anyway. on a more serious note, its a product that he doesn't like, but he's still giving props to the device. i think the way he posted was very fair.
JESUS!!!!!!!!!! I'm SO impressed!!!!!
@Gavin M
Thank you:D
@JonnyB
of-course this would happen with all the hype and people beasting to use it.
@Gavin M
VD is something bad, it's Diseases. iPad is a device that may or may not improve your quality of life, not disolve it. Also, I have yet to see a person use the device that hasn't actually liked it. I think if everyone used it they would like it and see how it could be beneficial to people but maybe not so much themselves as to justify the cost.
To say one hates the device or just flat out dislikes it is a lack of actually using the device. That is like all these people saying they hate the iPhone and Android is better or WinMo is better. It's really just a lack of using those devices, or they are trying to follow a certain group of people (bandwagon) and look like 'anti-establishment' individuals, and yet they fail to realize they are part of an establishment, the 'anti-nameofdevice' establishment.
The iPad is great for some, not so much for others. But to quickly knock it off as a 'Large iPod Touch' or say it's 'iCrap' is complete ignorance on your part. Especially considering you are here on a gadget blog, calling one of the most anticipated devices of the decade crap.
@JonnyB
You just made Steve Jobs wince. No, I guess he just farted.
@7egend Very true. I have let a about 10 play with my iPad and all but one says he will buy it soon (4 already bought it).
@JonnyB After reading TIME's review of the iPad, I've more realised that you cannot really "create". You can only, e.g. load a Photo in a photo editor and edit it, manipulate it, share it. For many people it's not important, but for people who want to produce, the iPad may be weak in that.
@7egend are you new here?
by now it's almost a tradition that engadget will make a post about apple everytime steve jobs has to pee, and everyone will trash the apple product in question
@7egend ahahah alright man, so your saying its ignorant to say something about a device I've never used?
I think its ignorant of YOU to assume shit you dont know. Never used an iPhone....hmmm im pretty sure i have used all 3 of them, and i dont like how it looks or acts, im just not one of those persons that dont like it. Yes it is a great phone, but it is not the best, and why i hate it is because it is over-rated.
Now about the iPad, you still think i nver used it? Well your wrong again. I have a iTouch, it is pretty much the same, except bigger. Now i know it has many different features, but it is practically the same, and no matter what tablet it is, my opinion is this, tablets are useless, Slate or iPad.
@JonnyB
In other news, Microsoft suckage drops to a record low, while Apple continues to maintain a near constant level of suckage over the years, but is expected to rise.

You KNOW this is AT LEAST as much news as this article is.
@JonnyB
i have yet to see one person using an ipad. these 500000 units ought to be showing up somewhere?
@JonnyB Tight name man! Bravo!
@7egend
We haven't met, but I've tried it (three times) and I don't like it. I want to like it, but I can't understand spending $500 on a product that doesn't do anything better (less actually) than my 4 year old laptop. At least my iPhone is pocketable and makes phone calls, the iPad I neither.
@BAGAGT1 The iPad doesn't support flash, however surfing the web is way better than on a laptop or any other device I have ever touched.
The iPad obliterates a laptop or desktop in most non content creation categories (except drawing).
@Springdaddy ahaha actually Ive been named this since i was in kindergarten, that was a long time ago lol
Why are the numbers being compared to phones? What are they compared to netbooks and tablet computers, the ACTUAL COMPETITION to the iPad?
Not slamming engadget for the info, but the only relevant information in the article is the amount of traffic from the iPad, which really doesn't seem that significant. The comparisons to phones is completely pointless and is only included so as to inflate the significance of the .03 percent.
@JonnyB Whats an iTouch?
@Ruthless I had it for one day and there is nothing magical about it. After 1 day I got annoyed with it so much that I just sold it(it's not as comfortable as it should be).
@7egend Ive used the ipad and it's very similar to the iPhone.

@JonnyB How much traffic did netbooks consume during that time?
@dxdragon
Do you game? I'll happily put my gaming rig against your iPad.
Do you browse the internet? I'll put my 2 23" monitors + keyboard/mouse against your sub 10" touch screen. Same goes for viewing content (like watching a movie). My monitor plays back Blu-Rays at 1080p - how about your iPad. Hulu looks great BTW - how's it look on the iPad?
Multi-tasking - how's that working out for you? I rarely only have one application open. Right now it's a few tabs in Chrome, Notepad, Explorer, and Visual Studio. Media Player is streaming from Windows Home Server in the background.
Either you didn't think your statement through or you do VERY little on a computer. An iPad is fine for people who casually browse the internet. It's a great device (if you like buying content from iTunes) to watch movies. Aside from that, it's a big toy. I could reasonably do about 10% of my overall computer activities on an iPad. By the same token, about 80% of what I do can be done on a netbook. There is no comparison - the iPad just doesn't come close to doing enough things for me.
@bjsguess
you owned that. saying ipad is better than computer for browsing is ridiculous lmao
@dxdragon
what are you smoking ?
@bjsguess
you ever think that maybe you don't have to buy movies via iTunes and can convert your own to m4v via handbrake?
i hate people who bitch about 'you gotta buy movies via itunes' when its NOT the case. sure, not many mom and pops will be doing video conversion but hell if your on this site, one would hope you'd know how to convert/transcode your own dvd/movies to such formats.
as for comparing a desktop to an iPad? really? our HP Server kills your desktop, but whats the point of comparing that; like comparing a corvette to a golf cart. and can fit your desktop into your backpack and take with you and have it last for 10 hours w/o an ac outlet? can you take your full desktop setup on a plane and use it in flight?
just saying... bad comparisons...
@seamonkey420
he was referring to other user who used to compare the ipad to a computer. as for carrying , there are netbooks with 14 hours of battery life. now that's a deal. do you feel insecure, are you mad that you regret wasting money on your pad ? do you bleed that's why you use an ipad ?
@jdm28690 List the netbooks with 14 hours of battery life. I'd like to check them out. Thanks.
@NoOrdinaryMSFT The people I know with an iPad use them at work or home, they don't carry them between.
@Billy I have no idea what you mean by that, there are several apps out that let you "Create" - look at Sketchbook Pro for example.
@Ruthless While 0.03% is actually much smaller than "less than half of one percent" implies it is pretty remarkable to think that the iPad is doing more than 5% of iPhone numbers. That was pretty quick. I guess we just need to this again when the iPhone 4G arrives. http://j.mp/verizon-iphone-4g
@jdm28690
@jdm28690
To visit websites that do not have Flash- it is much better. Luckily, I have had little need to use my laptop since owning an iPad. The iPad is so fast with regards to browsing the web, that it matters little that it does not multitask. Speed and user experience (tablet goes where ever) being a step back on the laptop.
No need to worry about malware or antivirus programs slowing your machine. Solely for the e-reader functions alone, the iPad is worth the price
@darksharpie
head on over to the Asus website and check out their netbook offerings. I think they use flash though, so you may be ool if you're trying on your ipad, I'm there on my netbook right now though, and reading the specs on the 1005he....
As far as browsing better on the pad? Not likely.
@seamonkey420
why the hell would I want to buy/rent a movie and rip it to dump on my ipad when I can just stream a movie free over hulu?
I guess if I'm on a flight and want to watch a movie I would have to download, or rent a DVD to watch it, but for business trips when I'm in a hotel room with free wifi and a cable to connect to the tv? No, there isn't an app for that.
@Ruthless
How could the iPad be the "most anticipated device of the decade" if no one had actually used it? Your own logic just pwned you.
@samagon0 Ok, their 11 inch gets "11 hours" of battery life and is twice the weight of the iPad...
"Better" browsing is subjective of course, some people like the experience of browsing with a touch screen vs using a tiny netbook trackpad (especially if the browsing doesn't involve a lot of typing).
@Sogeking

@dio777
nah browsing the web on the iphone OS sucks, the browser is slow, no tabs like other browsers, no plug ins, flash built websites are unviewable. and that little 1024 x 768 resolutions is laughable. thanks for the laugh man. we wanna upgrade dude not downgrade.
@darksharpie
2x the weight at the benefit of having a real keyboard attached to it. The pad may be a better experience until you want to reply to a forum post or an engadget blog, then you have to rummage for the keyboard (if you brought it with you), plug it in (or sync it up via bt), then you can reply. Anyway, 1.5lbs vs 2.9 lbs is jus about nothing at all. I can easily lift it with 2 fingers and my thumb.
At half the price and between over 10x to 4x the storage capacity (not to mention I can store whatever I want and recall that stored data any time I want) the weight is less than insignificant. And at half the price of the cheapest ipad? No way I can see how having a touch screen is worth that.
There are better options, and until I can interface with my computing device via my brain signals, or my eye movements, I'm not sold.
I can see the appeal, when there are people out there who are so technically not adept that they get scared by the thought of having to decide whether to install flash on their browser or not, god forbid They did and then wanted to remove it! This device would be a godsend for people who can't figure that out on their own.
@JonnyB
Honestly I don't get all this hate for the iPad, if you don't like don't get it it's simple theta are many other tablets out there... I didn't like the iPad until i played with one and now I own one... It fits my life style perfectly but of course it's not for everyone so why would you be angry about something you don't like? Be happy you won't pay $500 for something and save your money.. I on the other hand would have payed more for this amazing thing.. And I typed this all on my iPad
@AttractiveDoorHinge
hah, thanks :p
Did u really just compare VD to the iPad!?! Completely diffrent man.
@Ducman69
Exactly. This stat is a prime candidate for the Daily Show's "Is that a lot?" feature. Somebody call John Oliver.

@7egend I totally agree with you. Many so called tech geeks usually highly criticise any Apple product, just for the sake of doing so. This is a real shame. The success of
the iPhone has not been simply down to the Apple logo, but instead it is down to the way the device works.
The fact that most other manufacturers of mobile devices has used the iPhone as a bench mark, simply speaks for itself.
@Ruthless I WONDER IF THEY WERE FLASH BASED SITES?
