If you're itching to put a webOS device
on your AT&T account and don't mind having half the
now-standard RAM, the developers at
jictechnology have released what they're claiming is an official, permanent SIM unlock for the original Palm Pre. A few bugs to get through, but it's apparently legitimate enough (we haven't tried, but the happy customers in the forums seem to suggest success) for the group to charge around £25. Great news all around, but if you're the sort whose fixation on Palm hasn't been so grand that you resisted switching to
Sprint or
Verizon, you can probably wait for the AT&T's Plus-sized model.
@hated one
sounds like you could use some high school english. Anyways this news is good... The fact that my pre will potentially be unlockable when my contract with bell - cdma I know - is up. Anyways this is good news for those of us who appreciate the pre's usefulness and don't wanna be locked to a network. When my contract is up I will for sure be looking into getting this unlocked... If you had ever tried the pre you would realize just how awesome webos is. And btw seeing as apple is now finally implementing multitasking I'd say your comment about multitasking not being important is inaccurate. Yes it sold without that feature because it has a lot of other good features, not to mention apple's devout following of fanbois, but when it comes down to it the feature is much needed. I digress
Palm should be selling them unlocked online! And since they don't I dont feel sorry about them going under, good bye palm, you blew it
@hated one
U also hav no grammor. You claim not to be a fanboy, but you still call out Palm with "palm is being dismantled aS we speak", "u gotta go" and "u have no hope", and also refer to various Apple products as part of some "magical revolution". Simply stating that you're making a comment from a neutral point of view doesn't make it so...
Palm, drop some new hardware already 'fore i break ur f***ing neck!
is the pre plus keyboard more like the pixi's than the regular pre was?
Cool.
How about a new one.
Very slow news day :(
What is thy bidding master?
Better late than never?
I think a # of people will pick this up bc a lot of people like having an unlocked version & can swap which phone they wanna use in a second as they please & I know I've seen plenty of posts on here stating they've wanted this just so they could get a chance to play with WebOs. It certainly won't hurt Palm in moving some more units...
SIM Locking, just another nail in Palm's coffin.
So, it seems that now there's other companies doing Palm's job - that of putting their phones into new markets. And making money out of consumers for doing so.
Palm's up for sale because they blew it.
I'm in Australia. I wanted a Pre. I waited, and waited, and waited. It's still not available to me, and there's no sign of it coming. Now I have a Nexus One, my only interest in Palm now is purely from a news / technology perspective.
AT&T release the damm thing already. I want to ditch my iPhone
@hated one
quit being a moron. What makes you think it's not possible to get these phones month to month? That's not the issue. Where have you seen iphones being sold unlocked? There are tons of phones you can buy unlocked for a lot of money including the palm pre, or you can get them for next to nothing on a contract. Very often, people do the latter. Selling phones unlocked is not how networks or phone manufacturers make money. Getting contracts with major networks is how they make money. You can't possiby think that those month to month iphones on att are unlocked, can you?
Going a bit against my initial thoughts, I upgraded my LG Dare yesterday to a Pre Plus, couldn't be happier.
Helps too that Verizon waived the mobile hotspot fee, but I love Web OS; it very elegant in how it handles multitasking and switching apps (although if you had like 20 pages open, it would be a mess). Reminds me of the alt-tab previews in Vista/7.
The HW is pretty decent too, although it does get really warm, and the battery life is 'meh'.
I hope someone like HTC purchases/parters with Palm to keep Web OS going, it's just too good to let die.
Yeah right like this is coming to AT&T. VERIZON always gets theirs first.
@Inspector Gadget80 *facePalm* ...You know Verizon's Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are already released, right? And you know Verizon doesn't use SIM cards, right? A SIM unlock for GSM phones would not work on CDMA phones (such that Verizon would use), so it wouldn't matter either way.
I will wait to for a new pre hardware. the one they have now, even if unlocked, lacks behind the Nexus and other snapdragon based cell phone. if you wait enough maybe a 4g version.
@hated one ENGLISH!!!! DO YOU SPEAK IT???
