NewSight's 70-inch 3DTV keeps the glasses away with its parallax barrier tech
Last week's Finetech Japan 2010 expo allowed display manufacturers to show and tell each other about their latest innovations and advancements. One of the unquestioned highlights was NewSight's implementation of parallax barrier technology on displays up to 70 inches in size. The company is claiming its demo unit as the world's largest glasses-free 3D screen, but regrettably deprives us of any further details. All we're told is that the parallax barrier is "affixed to commercial-grade" LCDs, which suggests to us that perhaps the technique and hardware could be applied atop your favorite brand's existent 2D models. Of course, that'd only matter if these displays deliver a manifestly better picture and experience than what we have now, but it's looking like we'll have to wait a little bit longer to find out.

2D to 3D?
@n0ne
no, 3D to 2D
@n0ne
I just came.
@DeFlanko
Now I can't see the screen.
@eugeneaction My left eye can do 3D to 2D. I want Holodecks please!!
@DeFlanko
From where??
@hero785
Oh, dear.
You just set DeFlanko up to say "Your mom's house."
@n0ne Another daft comment from the round headed buffoon that is Karl Pilkington.
Glasses free? must have craptactular viewing angles.
@JamesHks
Yeah.... I mean with the 3DS, I'm not worrying about that at all... but for a 3DTV, they better have a good solution for viewing angles because that is an issue with parallax technology.
Who cares..
I WANT MORE iPHONE 4G news!
I just spent the entire week-end getting over H1N1 and this is the ONLY thing that kept be alive!
@AppleDrank That's kinda sad if iPhone 4G is your only reason to live.
@AppleDrank i think fan boys are funny to laugh at as they fail at having friends
Y'all getting trolled.
@jascop with iphone, their apps are their friends.
The parallax barrier also keeps the weeping angels in their own dimension.
Oh who gives a flyin' dragon.
Is the ideal viewing angle on parallax barrier displays manually adjustable? If not, a 'one size fits all' approach won't really go down well with the variety of living room shapes/sizes.
zzzzz
Snorlax barrier!?
What the point 70inch when its resolutions probably 720p or 1080p which will be pixalated video on a screen that size, the 3d effect will be giant mossaic 3D cubes
@OCEAN CLAK
Have you seen 1080 on a large screen?
I have a 720 projector that I use a 130" screen with. The picture is great and there is no pixelization. I was thinking about upgrading to 1080, but the picture doesn't look very different from mine.
@OCEAN CLAK
Most of the digital projectors you see in theaters are only 2k =~1080p.
3d? How bout PeeD! BOO YA HI FIVES ALL AROUND!
70" = nice.
@Bobula: hat's wah she saaaid *am eating a cookie and talking*

no glasses? FTW
@lightforce Having to have 5 people sit in your lap (three of which are overweight.) so they can see the 3D image....FTL.
Yah and what is the max angle you get the 3D experience? If everyone needs to sit within a 5* angle it will remain fail. Give me glasses where you can be anywhere and it seems to work.
Won't the resolution effectively be half if you convert a traditional TV to 3D? Each eye only gets half the pixels.
What happens in you film a parallax barrier TV with a 3D cam and then play the clip on a 3D enabled screen (with or without glasses) ?
So how is this "Parallax Barrier" any different than simple Lenticular stereoscopic 3D prints that were so common on pogs, baseball cards, comic books, and Cracker Jack prizes?
From what little I can tell about the technology, it looks like the same thing, except with a video playing in the back instead of a print.
it doesn't need to be that good to beat samsungs current offering. it is terrible. when i saw it it was demoing nascar and the olympics. bad move. the fast moving video just looked like rubbish in 3D. the backgrounds were perfect but the action was unwatchable.
i'll wait a coupla years thanks
Didn't Phillips do something similar?
