Toshiba's tablets said to offer Tegra 2 power, have we already seen the Android version?
News continues to trickle out about Toshiba's upcoming tablets, which we learned just last week would come in both Windows and Android flavors and would be shipping before the year is through. Now it seems that both versions, despite offering different designs, will offer NVIDIA Tegra 2 internals. That both tablets will be manufactured by Compal makes us wonder if we weren't given a preview of the future Tosh model when playing with a 7-inch Android prototype at CES in January, pictured above. There's a video of that after the break to refresh your memory, a relic dating from the pre-G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra era. Simpler times, those.

How can Windows 7 work with Tegra?
@Prevacator
Probably referring to Windows CE rather than Windows 7.
@Prevacator http://mobile-review.com/articles/2010/birulki-63.shtml
Is this what you're talking about? Scroll down, there's a chunky silver Toshiba tablet.
@David V the announcement last week said that it was a win7 tablet, one of the 2 posts then is wrong
@Prevacator
It's not Windows 7 rather Windows CE 7 (not to be confused with Windows Phone 7), see the source link for more info, shame on Engadget for not clearing this up, as it would be breaking news when Windows 7 run on Tegra SoC (CPU part is based ARM architecture not x86) .
@Ahmed Alzayani
That makes sense then. I was wondering how a Windows OS could run on ARM architecture.
@Prevacator It can't. Tegra = ARM. Windows 7, sadly can't do ARM. *sighs*
@Ahmed Alzayani Windows CE only goes up to 6.0 They haven't released anything past that.(Least, not that I have heard of...) WP7 is based off the 6.0 kernel, just like the Zune HD.
There's already code for (non-specific) Tegra devices in the Android Open Source Project, with some of it written by Google, so we can assume that there's going to be a Android/Google experience Tegra device of some sort in the future.
I love Tegra :D Maybe MS should make a ZunePad.
Hey look its the iPhone 4G Again ;) ;) :P
@5D If this is accelerated flash then im very interested. It is very smooth. Anyone know if there will be Tegra based phones or did I miss that announcement when vacationing under the rock?
@5D
All nvidia graphics chips are flash accelerated (As long as you are using flash 10.1)
I'd assume the Tegra 2 chip is supported by flash as well.
@5D Not only does it have HW-accelerated flash, we're talking about smooth 720p YouTube HD running in the browser. This is Tegra-2.... which is why I can't wait for it to it Android smartphones in 2H 2010...
Nice demonstration :D ... on a reflecting glossy screen with fingerprints :(
If I've already seen it then I'm quite interested :)
@juanvaldez
+1 especially with a battery that they say lasts for days.
I can only support tabslates based on closed operating systems that major media outlets create custom versions of their web presences for.
Why he haven't washed his hands and the tablet before filming ??
@boulabiar
Its at CES. People will be touching the thing all day. If he cleaned it before every demo, he'd spend more time cleaning than he would showing it off.
@BigJayDogg3 Not every demo at CES is destined to be broadcast on a widely viewed blog. I'm guessing the guy filming mentioned he was from engadget, you would think the booth folks at tradeshows would be catching on by now as to how crappy their stuff looks on shakeycam video.
@Chief2
No, however virtually everyone at CES is a member of the press (its a closed show). Several of which will be carrying around cameras. How do you know which one of them will be posing the video of your product?
It looks like a giant android phone.
Oh wait
Still waiting for my Tegra-2 equipped Android smartphone with a 4" Super AMOLED display....
The Galaxy-S is the closest phone to this description (4x more polygon power than Snapdragon), but till it gets a custom made ROM, I'm not buying it with the UI Samsung gave it...
@TareG Buy it, more people who buy it then the more developers will play with it :) (selfish endorsement as I'm pretty much sold on this phone, so if it gets a large user base it'll be that much better for me.)
Most current rumors are that this phone will be non-exclusive in the US for carriers.
@juanvaldez Not so fast. Tegra 2 is hitting smartphones in H2 2010, with super smooth HW-accelerated 720p YouTube HD running in the browser, along with the insane battery-life offered by Tegra 2 SOC.... so while the Samsung S is incredible, it's lacking compared to what we may potentially get, coming H2 2010.
Also, seeing how beautiful a job HTC did with Android, I'm reluctant to buy a non-HTC phone (e.g. Text re-flow in the browser on zooming). Believe me, coming from Symbian, I realize the importance for text re-flow in a browser....
@TareG Well, as of right now with Samsung being the only Super-AMOLED manufacturer the demand for Samsung's high-end superphones will (and maybe the next iPhone as it seems to be the only rumored phone to have Super AMOLED with any legs as to the logic behind it; more on this at the end.) So, if the Beam (probably not) Wave (maybe, all price dependent), and Galaxy S (price might kill it) + whatever else they decide to put it in are in high demand there wont be much Super AMOLED going around for the 2nd half of 2010. I'm not sure how far the competition is off from bringing anything competitive in the mix.
The next iPhone will definitely have some dreams of Super AMOLED, the logic I say as to the possibility of it getting it is entirely my own as I haven't heard anything but wishes and dreams. Samsung could've won (extra) contracts for iPad parts (most notably the IPS screen) in exchange for the screens. Also, the iPhone would get Samsung more screens shipped and at a higher price than any other phone would get, the same way their NAND memory works. Lastly, Apple might feel the need to overpay a little bit to have an edge up on the competition for at least the next 6 months while the supply of these screens are very low.
@juanvaldez I've also heard (and totally believe) that the iPhone HD will indeed get a Super AMOLED screen... 80% transflection and 20% more brightness and less battery life is something worth acquiring, and indeed, with the iPhone Samsung will make a deal like no other. Maybe only HTC could rival that deal.
Here's more about Super AMOLED for the iPhone:
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/04/16/iphone-hd-4g-may-rock-samsungs-super-amoled-display-technology.html
But then again, the very fact iPhone HD will get the Super AMOLED display makes me certain that HTC will seek to acquire them as well. I cannot imagine a Nexus Two or any Android phone wanting to go head-to-head with the iPhone next Christmas with a sunlight non-viewable phone...
@TareG * I mean 80% LESS transflection...
@TareG Again, it all depends on the supply of this screen, the demand is clearly there in the consumer market as the usefulness is exponentially better outdoors. 80% less transflection doesn't do anything justice when something goes to barely or not useable outdoors to extremely useable and beautiful. Also, I'm sure you know but you quote it as having less battery life and I'm sure you mean less battery usage (longer battery life).
So, N2, and all other HTC devices will be subject to Samsung and Samsung might be subject to an exclusive/priority contract order for Apple. Just MHO tho.
@juanvaldez True, although I'd like to remind you Samsung makes more money selling internals than it does selling their phones... so even though it makes complete sense not to ship an HTC competitor with a Super AMOLED screen to compete with their own Galaxy S, it also doesn't mean Super AMOLED will be exclusive to Samsung or Apple. I really expect the Christmas 2010 market to have at least one 4" Super AMOLED HTC Android on shelves, running either Tegra 2 or Scorpion (the former being better), and knowing that with almost 100% certainty makes waiting for Christmas a good call, IMO.
That said, don't worry about the Samsung S.... it will sell like crazy, especially that its UI is very very consumer friendly (the home and app soft buttons, for instance) and very "iPhonish".... two of more reasons why it doesn't really appeal to me...
@TareG Aggregate numbers versus margins are two completely separate topics. A Galaxy S would net them 3-4x what the screen and other internals would, so if it came down to it, they would most definitely prefer to boost their bottom line than to cut their supply lower than what they need. Also, one of the reasons why Samsung doesn't make a great deal on their phones (they were down to something like $115 average selling price, which I assume is the price given to them by the distributors/carriers). Smartphones net more than triple this, they've been on feature phones too long and are starting to feel less competitive by the day.
I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that if:
Samsung is the sole supplier of the screens
Apple gets a deal lined up for an iPhone that gets sold during 2010
& between now and the end of the year they can't produce more than 15 million Super AMOLED screens that HTC won't get 1.
Just my 2 cents. That said, these phones will definitely be announced in the 2nd half of the year, so it'll be interesting to see what deals are scored.
The great new thing, is always just out of reach...
Water world...
Looks like a huge Acer liquid.
My next gadget would be with windows 7, 1080p resolution, SSD storage and probably Tegra and ARM will make it a fanless gadget. These are the ingredients of a truly compact or mobile machine, factor in of course, BT & WI-FI or even WI-MAX. I don't see any sense of having a gadget with limited capability as WinCE or other half-baked OSes. With Windows OS the funtionality is limitless and I'm very at home with my creativity. Kudos Bill Gates!
@pedpalina Can't have ARM and Win7 in the same package. Need to adjust your needs. You'll have to settle for Android or maybe Chrome when that comes out.
1080p will be available through pass-through (HDMI out) but I'm not sure if there is a tablet that would be released in 2010 with native 1080P, though I can easily be uninformed and/or unable to see the future.
@hated one If you didn't say "serious question" I would've completely ignored this post.
" Ok serious questions. I'm all for competition btw.
What the f is android trying to do here. Clone ipad?
Android if your table isn't gonna be Superior to ipad in every single way , then it will fail. For example for years wm been releasing tablets but we know they all blow. "
Ok, "Android" isn't trying to do anything. Android, does not have wings of its own or a profit motive. Android is an OS that is free for OEMs to use. Here you have to ask what is "Toshiba" thinking. And for that answer, they can sell some units they might be able to make some money, even if it can't be a runaway hit.
On a similar note, WM never released any tablets either. Again, this was OEMs using a Windows kernel to package their tablet on. These are considered by anyone in the know to be in a completely different market than the iPad. You are right, they were never very well-received in nearly any sense of the word.
Perhaps, you didn't mean Android and didnt mean Toshiba. Perhaps you meant Google, but this isn't the tablet they are working on and I'll only talk about it once it's less vaporous.
I'll ignore your analogy and sales #s due to both of us missing market information.
Engadget, fix the ending of the article, it currently says:
"Simpler times, those."
When it should say:
"Simpler times, those were..."
@Plazmic Flame What, we're not allowed to sound folksy anymore?
@hated one
they market is not wise at all. they like watered down products that are locked down to hell. they like being told what they can and can't do. any missing features weren't needed in the first place. of course until, a newer version of said product comes out with those missing features. then somehow competitors that had those missing features all along will be called copycats. lol.
The fact that you can't run Windows on ARM and the like will be Windows 7's undoing....at least on these hyper mobile devices. Desktops\Laptops\Notebooks\Netbooks they still own.
5 hours on atom is simply too low for such devices. Base should be 6 hours. 7 would be preferable to make it an all day device.
7 inches is to small...>insert jokes here
@genomecop wow..how odd. .Half my above post disappeared.
I love how every demo for these rumored tablets are just playing a video....pathetic. I'll stick with my iPad...it is pretty amazing...and it plays video beautifully..thank you!
