Microsoft Germany's Facebook page solidifies Kin specs
Nothing here we didn't already know, but it's nice to have some final, official confirmation: Microsoft Germany's just posted the specs for the Kin One and Kin Two on its Facebook page, and they line right up with that original, Google cached leak. As originally foretold, the Kin One will sport a 2.6-inch capacitive TFT LCD screen at 320 x 240 resolution, a 5 megapixel CMOS camera, 4GB of flash memory and a 1240 mAh battery, while the Kin Two ups its game with a 3.4-inch 480 x 320 screen, an 8 megapixel CMOS HDR shooter by Omnivision with a LumiLED flash, 8GB of solid state memory and 1390 mAh of juice. Both get 256MB of DDR, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11 b/g WiFi, GPS, FM radio and an accelerometer; neither will own up to the Tegra they hide inside their svelte plastic frames. Not a fan of specs? Find out what Kin's really all about in our full guide.

The Kin is the new iPhone. You want it.
@The Advanced Kind
I hope you just forgot the sarcasm tag. for yours, and everybody on engadget's sake.
@safe travels or the happy 420 at the end of the comment
@The Advanced Kind dude seriously how much did MS pay you?
@The Advanced Kind That would be a negative, although I do like the Kin 2 if it has attractive pricing. =)
@The Advanced Kind No, I really don't...
HDR shooter?
As in High Dynamic Range?
I'm confused, or does HDR stand for somthing else aswell?
@DylanUK
p.s. Engadget, please make engadget work with Opera properly. Incredibly annoying having to go into IE everytime I want to login :(
@DylanUK
Use firefox or chrome instead, Opera good but it hasnt got the market share that the others broswer have, so a lot of sites dont support it and IE aswell especially the 6th version
@OCEAN CLAK
The features opera has innovated (as far as I know these came first in Opera, I could well be wrong), such as mouse gestures, smooth email integration, even speed dial (however simple an idea that may be) are what brought me over to the brouser. I also like its look and feel, and although all the brousers eventually steal each others innovations I would feel wrong deserting the brouser that has given me the most pleasurable web-brousing experience.
Anyway, this is totally off topic. Somone explain to me wtf they mean by HDR camera paweese
@DylanUK
You know what nevermind, it is High Dynamic Range, just found it on google. Be interesting to see how a sensor of low quality (in comparison to DSLR) will manage HDR considering the quality of an image plays a massive part in how a HDR image comes out.
@DylanUK
According to Wikipeida, HDR is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminances between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight.
@DylanUK High Definition Recording
@aimran
Lol, yea I know, I'm a Videographer/Photographer, HDR can produce some absolubtly beautiful photos and is one of my favorite techniques to use. Up until very recently HDR was achieved by taking 3 or more photos at different stops (i.e. -1, 0, 1) then merging these photos in photoshop. Using a single ship to capture HDR is strange as it takes alot of processing power to combine these images, after a bit of research into these Omnivision chips they are primarily made for the Auto industry to allow a car to get a better view of the road, both shadows and highlights. But this must be a version adapted for consumer use, I can't imagine it will produce images anything like what you would get from a DSLR, but it will be intersting to see if it makes the image better than your bog standard phone camera.
p.s. Check out some HDR images by visiting deviantart and searching for HDR. If you havnt seen a HDR image before you'll be blown away,
@DylanUK : There's even issues with the Engadget site in IE8.
It's a pity these aren't launching on more, non-CDMA carriers. i'm not sold on the idea of cloud-only storage but having a cheap phone has a good camera, web browser, and the Zune service would be great as a backup to something larger and more expensive.
Does this mean kin will be released in europe(spain)?
Specs are good for a dumbphone for both kins
I hate the cluttered interface.
I am not opposed to the idea of this phone, but the hardware does not look too good. The layout of these phones do not seem they will facilitate easy messaging. There is a reason why sidekicks were so popular, they were VERY easy to type on. I hope they can fix this. I say this as a college student (not too into social networking).
@Mike Vick
Yeah, I'd be laying low for a bit too considering the old crew you used to hang with...
Glad to see you're back in college tho! VT treating you well?
@Mike Vick
Hey dude, everyone who has made a hands on video about this phone is saying that they keyboard is great for typing. Check out youtube for some hands on videos.
PS. Having said that, if you are not that into social networking, this phone might not be for you lol
@Rossgadget
Yeah you know a homie had to go back to school and get his edumacation =) ! And no running with the dogs no more (Pun intended). Im in school in the big city now yea boy!
Seriously, the idea of this phone is good but the hardware layout isn't that good. The sidekick is an awesome phone to typee on.
Kin One is perfect for my girls (9 & 11)....but its missing games to really capture my boys' (11 & 13) affection....
DumbPhone
actually DumberthanhellPhone
@obobo
No, it's Smart Dumbphone. It's a completely new species of phones. In all seriousness, it's a featured phone.
@obobo
Perhaps it could be called the feature super phone.
Also, I saw a rumor today that the KIN ONE will run $0 on a 2 year contract and that verizon will indeed be rolling out a special data plan for it.
I hope the KIN studio comes to Windows Phone 7 Series. I love the timeline. And I love that I'd be able to travel and take pictures and tweet etc and then look at the map to see my history of recap adventures
Those specs have already been known since last week?! WTH Engadget:
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/04/12/microsoft-kin-one-and-kin-two-specs-unveiled/
Microsoft has also officially confirmed that it's a Tegra APX2600 in there:
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/04/13/microsoft-kin-tegra-apx-2600-on-board-and-worldwide-release-info/
An interesting note which some may have missed is that Kin phones will soon be able to sync with Mac computers, too: a Zune client for Mac arrives in May.
You forgot the most important spec: A2DP, making it the first-ever Zune you can use through Bluetooth stereo.
8MP camera, 720p recording, yet only 8GB memory? How's uploading 720p video via EVDO? If the Kin Studio resize/transcode pictures and videos into lower res, than it defeats the purpose.
Does that mean the zune (software and hardware ) will soon be available in Europe?
Holy kazinga!
