Nintendo 3DS may launch in October, say 'UK industry sources'
How the mighty have fallen. Where just last year companies like Apple and Nintendo were renowned for their ability to keep completely silent about impending hardware, these days the thrill of exposure and some media pressure go a long, long way. Now, if Computer and Video Games' sources are to be believed, Nintendo's had another leak: an October release date for its autostereoscopic 3DS handheld in the UK. That's well within the original "before March 2011" timeframe, and apparently a surprise for game publishers currently planning software for Holiday 2010. Besides, since Europe typically gets Nintendo systems after the US and Japan, some lucky dogs might get the system even earlier -- we'll let you know when we see it ourselves at E3 this June.

Would Sony release 3D of its own?
Stylus nipple tweaking in 3d finally?
@IcerC It may be too early to get excited now, but the video impressions for the firmware of this device is really astounding. http://j.mp/3ds-by-nintendo-impressions
@mellisauiyler That video is a DSi game, that's not what the 3DS is going to be.
PSP 3D!!!
I would still think that nintendo will be coming out with more interesting games than sony in the handheld field though..
@MiketheVee
psp is crap and has no games. youre pathetic
@googkiller
wow. you must be a moron of epic proportions. what you said was my point. I figured you failed at sarcasm and also didn't comprehend that I said Nintendo will be coming out with more interesting games than sony anyways.
Moron.
@MiketheVee Sony already said that there will be no PSP 3D at least not this year
@max1c
haha I know. I was only being sarcastic about the sony's next move. Just a little jab.
nPad is coming!

Do. Not. Tell. The. Kids...
@2mnyshp
f+ck the kids, let them dig a hole or something
Dang it Nintendo! You are making me question whether I should a DSi XL for the summer or wait till the fall....
@New Reformation i wondering the same thing! either i repair my DS or buy a DSi but now i think im gonna send it... the fall can't come soon enough
@New Reformation
*should buy
I hate it when other people omit verbs. Doing it myself drives a small bit of self-loathing. Engadget needs to a edit button.
@lalaluluj
if nintendo keeps up their awesome work with backwards compatibility, then I say wait for the 3DS and enjoy your games in 3D and still be able to play normal DS games.
Why would anybody be surprised about an October launch? That's when the Nintendo DS launched, and Nintendo already said that the 3DS would launch sometime during this financial year. I already expected it in the fall.
@Dreamwriter
Same here. It had to be before holiday season 2010 kicked off.
@Dreamwriter
The original DS launched in November, in the North America. It didn't reach Europe until March of the following year.
They need to get off the high horse and realize its not 2004 anymore.
@IcerC
Wuh?
@IcerC
I take it you think the the 3DS is just another revision to the DS? Well it's not. 3DS is confirmed to be Nintendo's next generation handheld. A proper successor.
Isnt pokemon white and black coming out for the normal ds after october? this wouldnt make sense
@googkiller Only if they aren't for the DS. That would be mind bogling selling point for the 3DS.
If you see 3D glasses they blew it.
@Edobe
if you see an oversized ipod touch, they blew it
@Edobe
ITT ipad jokes
@Edobe If you see an iPhone left in a bar, they blew it.
@googkiller
If a device meant for games doesn't have buttons they blew it.
@Edobe Why would you see them glasses? This must be your first time hearing from the 3DS I presume..
Engadget knows Europe's pain when it comes to release dates apparently.
@HikaKao It has gotten a lot better
recently.
@GeorgeRobo I know, but there are still some small differences left. Not major enough to make me dislike Europe even the slightest. :] Plus, other people experience this too, so sorry if my post seemed bitchy.
ipad3D?
@cameronsipod
it'll probably be something like iFail3D. They'll probably implement 3D about 3 years after it comes out for a large amount of other devices and claim that it is a magical revolution from the mythical rainbow unicorn factory in cupertino.
just my sentiments.
Day one.
nope not this year! i swear it wont happen this year...ill eat my hat
@Aceyriot
Prepare for indigestion...!
@Plazmic Flame why do people keep saying that? its a dumb move if they do that! there is NO reasonable space between devices if they release it. it would essentially be killing the xl hardware! theres no logic to putting out a new device four months after the previous design came out.not only does it make NO sense from a marketing perspective, its not economically viable to the xl. it came out FIVE DAYS AGO HERE! AND the DSi came out one year to the day before that! nintendo is smart! they are going to put a bit more wiggle room in there. otherwise they are wasting r&d, marketing and manufacturing money for other devices. its just not how you should do things!
you dont see ANY other company do that, yeah maybe from q1 to q4 but not Q2 to Q3
if its out b4 january it WONT be out here. japan yes! here? no, fxxx'n way
@Aceyriot
Maybe its a good Idea to release a 3D hand held console before competition even thinks about catching up.
Just like they did with Wii, released motion controlled console long time before MS or Sony could even imagine it.
@Aceyriot The 3DS is to the DSiXL as the DS was to the Gameboy Advance Micro. Not all that surprising a move really. Technically the DS has been around for 5 years now. Sounds like the timeframe Nintendo always releases the next gen handheld to me.
@Plazmic Flame and im right again, not until march. aww too bad, my hat looked delicious
I agree with Aceyriot - its way to soon
Everytime I see news about this thing I go pick up my DS lite and start playing
@knewman
Yeaaah.. so do i.. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is just way to much fun.
It's been a while since I had 99.99999% certainty that I'll be purchasing a device.
Unless maybe, MAYBE...if the PSP2 is super duper incredible awesome with X360 graphics, a sleek form factor, dual analogues, and a touchscreen.
Other than that distant possibility, I'm handing over my money to the handheld gaming experts. Glasses-free 3D FTW.
its going to be fun watching these kids trying to tap their stylus into thin air
Stop telling your korean jokes!!!
