Zune HD: yes, it plays Doom
No matter how weak or powerful the gadget, one brave soul will always broach the all-important question: can it play Doom? Just four days after hacking the Zune HD and unleashing the OpenZDK, the Zune community has received its answer. ZuneBoards forumgoer Netrix has opened the portal to the familiar alien hell, where gamers will writhe in agony as they struggle with tilt and touchscreen controls. Those who persevere regardless will find the app runs any of the original Doom WAD files. Full installer available at the source link; see OpenZDK's power in action after the break.

Cool, but I still can't get that hideous looking Blackberry out of my head...
*shivers*....
@Cwill127
When manufacturers play games...
**sunglasses**
...there's more than one kind of DOOM.
@Cwill127 Ahahahaa! right on!
@Cwill127
man those controls need work. like how bout tap and hold bottom left for moving forward then use tilt to turn, eh eh? none the less this is very promising.
just picked up a zune hd 3 weeks ago. i was bummed at how it had so much potential, but at least it was still an amazing media player. however we are in a different ball game now, it is only a matter of time before openZDK really takes off. i can't wait!
now if only microsoft would have allowed open dev from the beginning, why oh why?
@MrGoodCat
I am still very curious to see what microsoft will do about this. I really hope they don't try to stop the hack. The zune team has better things to do (like bring wpa enterprise support).
@Horatio Caine
Really? Nobody? Not a single one? Alright then.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
So, if there is a gadget that can play (+/- 20 years old) Doom will be considered a ...uhm .. a tech wonder?
@pur
since this requires no flashing of the firmware...even if microsoft came out with a fix (block), as long as you don't update your firmware you'd be ok.
but yeah, they better not do anything, unless that something is to support it, haha. for some people, openZDK is a reason to upgrade their old zune or simply buy into the zune scene. i don't see how they (microsoft) can lose form this, its not like they have a paid app service that will take a hit, sigh
@Cwill127
Gaming sucks on my iPod Touch. For the same reason gaming will suck on the Zune. You need buttons! Tilting a device is only fun for so long. When someone makes an attachment for these devices that offer buttons and a D-Pad then you will have a winner.
@MrGoodCat The options in the game provide several different combination of touch-tilt controls, and your suggestion is possible. Still, I find them all unwieldy. Given that the Zune's touchscreen registers a pressure value, I suggested to the developer that a dual-analog control be included, where one circle in the bottom left corner moves, and another in the bottom right aims. Pressing harder on the aiming circle would fire.

If anything, this just shows that touchscreens are a horrendous control scheme for anything except non-realtime RTS games.
Better question; will it run XBMC?
@ryan7107
As much as I love XBMC... the interface just can't compare to the style and the usability of the Zune interface.
However, the Codec support and plugins and scripts would be bad-ass.
More important, when can we get Rockbox on this?
@RITarded09 you want to replace the sexy Zune interface and eliminate Zune Pass to put Rockbox on it? why? i like Rockbox and all but i don't see the point in this case.
@ryan7107 The real better question is will it run Cryisis
@kojo87
Not eliminate, never. The interface on Rockbox is utter crap. However, it'd be nice to have the option to fall back upon in case I feel like using USB MSC instead of ZTP and etc.
Those controls look HORRID!
@Woovie
The game is clearly not done. When you perform a port you work first on the game porting part, THEN you focus all you energy on the control to get it perfect. Also, I don't think this will ever be released in any case, as I feel like Id will sue someone.
@GoodBytes eh I'm sure it will be, I have doom on my phone(Droid) had it on my old phones too for WM. they tend to not care about it.
@GoodBytes it is released. check out the source.
@GoodBytes as with most doom ports, its only an engine that can run the doom .wads, and doesn't provide them, so theres truly nothing illegal about it.
@Woovie and your mom looks whorid
Right after I sold mine...
They blew it
@Bskballa92
They? It was one guy in about a week. That's pretty damned remarkable.
@crapNstuff
Missed the reference there huh?
@crapNstuff
Microsoft not allowing this sooner, much like how Apple blew it with the first iPhone
@crapNstuff
obviously... foot in mouth
@crapNstuff
ewwwww
but will it play crysis?
@Joeyjoejoe Shabadoo
i ALMOST want to uprank you.
@Joeyjoejoe Shabadoo
Search in page: "Crysis"
Ah, there it is.
@Wildman
uprank, upvote, digg, bury, downvote, downrank OH GOD THIS IS SO CONFUSING!
@Joeyjoejoe Shabadoo I think I'll diggvote this with a buryrank.
Does it blend? THAT is the question.
@roflcopter
can I buy a vowel? Or was it phone a friend :/
@roflcopter
Especially when "digg" and "bury" are opposites :-P
@onlymyrailgun
I lol'd :D
@Joeyjoejoe Shabadoo you mean will it play crysis 2?
Everything runs Doom. It's like an initiation. iPhone OS, Android, WebOS, Symbian (I think..), now Zune and I'm sure WM7 eventually.
@TheGM WP7 will have the Snapdragon processor or better, and so will the new Zune HD2. This will be for the higher gaming potential for the Xbox integration.
@TheGM
even my fucking GRANDMA runs DOOM!
and that's just hardcore.
@Alexicov Where do you plug the floppy disks into your granny then?
I'm asking because I recently stumbled over my *original* DOOM package with the *original* floppys inside! Those were the days..
cool!
I want a zune phone MS! (same zune HD look).
@Billy Gun Did you miss all the stories about Windows Phone 7?
So ... the Zune HD is as powerful as a 1993 computer?
@Meekermoloko Dont you know what the common hardware back in 92/93 was? We're talking 486 class computers here..
@Bahumbug
Uh, yeah ... That's my point.
Why must they keep putting Doom on tech devices just to show that it can be done? Put at least Half-Life on there or something from this century.
@Meekermoloko
The point is, it can play DOOM. So, stop with the nay-saying. Play moar DOOM.
@ytilanigiroon
I can't play this version of Doom.
I have 2nd gen Zune.
I would get Zune HD, but that is obsolete now too.
So, fine ... it can play Doom.
But can it play Pong?
