Dell Lightning: the ultimate Windows Phone 7 device leaks out
Hot damn, people. The mother of all Dell leaks just dropped into our laps, and the absolute highlight has to be the Lightning, a Windows Phone 7 portrait slider. That's right -- a portrait slider. The renders on these slides look slick as hell, but they're no match for the spec sheet, which looks even better: 1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processor, WVGA 4.1-inch OLED display, AT&T and T-Mobile 3G, five megapixel autofocus camera, 1GB of flash with 512MB RAM plus 8GB of storage on a MicroSD card (non-user-replaceable, we're assuming), GPS, accelerometer, compass, FM radio, and full Flash support including video playback. We'll see what happens with that -- the ship date is pegged at Q4, indicating this is a WP7 launch device, and Microsoft's told us Flash won't make it into the OS initially. Here's the real kicker, though -- other slides in the deck indicate this thing is getting an upgrade to LTE in Q4 of 2011. Are we stoked? Yes, you might say that. Check out all the slides in the gallery below, and check out the rest of this storm of leaks right here.

Beautiful phone.. The only problem I see with it is that when I need customer service I will be speaking to someone with a heavy indian accent that doesn't understand english named "John" or "Susan".
Americans made Michael Dell a billionaire, He thanked America by outsourcing all the customer service jobs overseas.
@Sarck Except wouldnt you be dealing with the carrier? I'm with Telus and they Exchange all my phones that were defective, while on contract.
"...slick as hell..."? Did somebody let the Gizmodo editors in here?
This had better come out in Canada :(
I will be buying one of these. Several if it syncs with Outlook as well as previous windows phone versions did.
Dell has a large support system and that's a good thing. however their lappys have some fit and finish issues after about 6 months while others (my old E1505) have never had problems. They are promising the Earth and sly with this phone so hopefully it will be perfect by December. There will be a lot of competition.
Product looks incredible.. Can't wait to see a full review and perhaps touch the product.
Ugh, there's another $600+ I have to shell out in December...
this one simply looks amazing!!! very sleek indeed. Altho i agree the specs aren't something revolutionary, tho i wud definitely b lookin forward to see hw wp7 performs on this device and how well the hardware is up for the software; how well flash performs, how well the large 4.1 inch displays and repsonds to touch etc..
EPIC win!
This is impressive. Dell is basically coming out of nowhere. (Garmin, Asus, Palm, SonyEricson etc... is it so difficult? ) It seems someone listens to customers and capable to execute. Just do add a front facing camera as phone operators have finally given way to VOIP.
@me2ici +1
Did Apple know Dell preparing for this and therefor "lost" their new 4G iPhone?
Rim probably didn't, considering the fugly blackberry 9670 flip device
@Nilay Patel
"Ultimate Windows Phone 7" device? I hope it's just a werid sense of humor, and dont really think that.
- 5mp camera is sooo 2009. I've had my old Samsung Omnia for 1.5 years and it has the same camera
- QSD8250 Snapdragon is the old one, same as HTC HD2 and it has been out for a year. The new QSD8650 is much better, and its not even new anymore
- OLED display sucks, it's not even as good as AMOLED and AMOLED has rather poor visibility in sunlight. Samsung paved the way to the future with Super AMOLED technology, which is already out. First WP7 devices aren't gonna be out before September and you call "Ultimate" a display, which is like 2 generations back...
Seriously questionable taste....If you want a contender for "Ultimate" phone title take a look at HTC Olympian, and if you insist in WP7 OS - check out "LG Apollo"
Is that the Zune HD software on the phone? I know Windows Phone 7 has Zune support but the phone had a Zune hub, not the same interface as the HD....
Correct me if I'm wrong.
@SuperShoe It has the same jist to it which I don't mind. I love my Zune HD UI. Here's an actual demonstration.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IOTrqlz4jo
Well, I thought that the iPhone HD looked nice.
It looks like Zune with a slider keyboard....that being said, i'm sure that the same 100 people people that own a Zune will line up to buy these too.
...the specs are sweet, but there are still too many fails here: 1. Dell 2. Windows
wow.. i want one
everyone seems to be talking just about the phone, but am i the only one who noticed how sexy WP7 looks in black, as opposed to the blue and red versions that have been shown before?
all fanboyism aside, if this was coming to sprint and the evo wasn't, i'd really look into it. it's a great looking phone, running an OS that might put microsoft back into a top spot in the phone market, and has tons of features under the hood. i just stubbornly need to stay with my well-priced sprint plan and want a mobile hotspot built into my phone, sorry dell.
@DaveHazard
I wouldn't look into that screen too much. That screen is ripped right off a Zune HD... truth be told, I'm sure Dell wanted to use it because WP7 has a Zune built right in and because like you say, its "home screen is sexier than the more business focused home screen of WP7.
@timotim looking again, you're right, my bad. WP7 would still look awesome if they made it match the zune UI though, and since WP7 is pretty much the zune phone, they should make it match.
@DaveHazard
The problem with that is, the home screen of the Zune HD is non dynamic. This means it doesn't update itself based off whats happening in your world. The panels are also smaller on the ZHD so it doesn't lend itself well to reading text on them, which is the only reason why they are bigger (and solid color) on WP7's home screen. What they could do is allow the end user to also skin the background of the home screen (not just the lock screen) to give it more flair but the Live Tiles of WP7 are a MUST in my opinion.
Nice looking purse phone.
Absolutely gorgeous. It fits the look of Metro like a glove. Only camp I see competing with this design is HTC... maybe the HD3 will be saving the best for last.
For me, this would have been great if it wasn't for the fact that it has a slider keyboard. For those of us that have absolutely no problems using a touch keyboard, a phone with a physical keyboard is just a fat waste of space. Plus, the sliding action eventually gets loose and sloppy and the phone just seem cheaply made becuase of it *a-heam the DROID*. Wake me up when we finally have a WP7 device that DOESN'T have a physical slideout keyboard. The prototype hardware that MS was using seemed to be perfect IMHO. This is the year 2010 after all...time to move on.
@Otakuon
HTC will most likely provide what your looking for (even though Samsung already has). Besides, this phone looks good enough to me that I would still get it (if I felt like you) and simply use the on screen keyboard instead of the slideout... its slim and sexy enough.
EVO 4G, Droid Incredible, Dell Lightning, whichever way you look at it, phones with WebOS, BlackBerry, Symbian, Iphone, and Maemo needs to play catch up.
4.1inch OLED screen? Microsoft? NOW that's the phone for me!
Please Dell, don't mess up the touch screen! Make it smooth if not smoother than the iPhone.
Microsoft did it! A Whooping 4.1 OLED screen. OLED is known for beautiful colors and an unbeatable contrast. Gosh, I knew it would pay off to wait.
This is it, this is the phone I've been waiting to change my current one for.
Portrait sliders - maybe not everyone's choice, but always my preference.
looks sexy. Do Want!
Dude.....I'm getting a Dell.
I know there'll be a ton of apps for any popular windows platform, so no worries there. Only thing I'm worried about is touch screen performance, and file transfer freedom. I prefer an optional slide qwerty, espcially for use in certain games and for certain typing situations, but I think they should also offer a version without one for those who don't need/want it.
(Here's hoping, that Windows 7 phone series has foreign language input support, like the iPhone.)
I also wish there was a front facing camera.
The only other phone I'm looking at is the HTC Scorpion.
(The dual-core Snapdragon looks promising, and rumors of 1080p take the cake.)
Looks very good...very nice. I will buy one for my wife. As owner of HD2 will wait what HTC will have to offer...
GAH why do the only GSM carriers in the US have to be AT&T and T-Mobile. Both *suck* where I live. Bleh.
Glossy back? I really hope not......
My rant: I don't get why it the vast majority of design for electronics (laptops, phones, etc.) incorporates the glossy finish. It is just like a black car...it looks good off of the assembly line for about 10 minutes.......looks like hell from there on out. Hello?
It looks like a ZunePhone
I think these new Dell Phones are well developed en i hope they will come to Europe as well. And especially the Netherlands. Because a lot of fancy phones don't make it across sea, and that's to bad. If you are interested in a dutch preview for the Dell Lightning, you can go to www.gsmpedia.nl/dell-lightning
Thanks for being on top of the GSM market engadget! It's always nice to read about new phones. But to bad not every phone comes to the Netherlands
It should be http://www.gsmpedia.nl/dell-lightning
Sweet
Great news that Dell is making a way into mobile market devices. I think Lightning will have success and I give you 2 arguments: big screen and the QWERTY keyboard. Why? Because socials rule our life.
We made a preview, enjoy it, http://www.itsagadget.com/2010/04/dell-lightning-set-to-be-perfect-for-windows-phone-7.html
Will this support Swype text input like the thunder???
I'm not impressed. But then again, I'm not a big fan of portrait sliders. If you're gonna thicken up the device by making it a slider, then make the most of the space by making it a landscape slider. Notice all that wasted space underneath the screen when the slider is opened? It is also easier to type on a landscape keyboard.
sweet phone...i'll toss my bb bold if this has wi-fi. Seems Dell has grown a set.
I LOVE this phone!!!
But should i get the pre now for the 3D games
OMG decisions decsions
i love them both/
