Okay, so imagine a
Pixi, but awesome. We think you'd end up with something closely resembling the phone that Dell's whipping up with a codename of "Smoke," running Android
Froyo atop a 2.8-inch QVGA display (looks more like WVGA to us, but whatevs). Dell calls it a "non-conforming style," but we just call it drop-dead gorgeous -- assuming the final product even remotely resembles the company's renders -- and they're even promising a price that "won't break the bank," which is always a nice little bonus. The description we're reading of the phone leads us to believe that Dell will be targeting a corporate audience with the Smoke, and that's certainly the clique that tends to enjoy portrait QWERTY keyboards, so this should fit right in amongst the sea of BlackBerrys when it launches in the second quarter of 2011. That's a hell of a wait, yes, but in return, you'll be getting Qualcomm's next-gen MSM7230 processor at 800MHz, a 5 megapixel autofocus cam, 14.4Mbps HSPA, microSD expansion to 32GB, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and dual-mic noise canceling tech in a 12mm package. Check out the full gallery below!
Just downright Ugly! But you have to give it to dell, four phones in released three hours! I thought we were trying to stay AWAY from the pixi form factor :)
@pishmish
The phone might work well, but I don't need a slim phone. I would much rather have a large screen with more viewing space like the HTC HD2. Props to Dell, however, for releasing these great looking phones - I'm sure they'll do well.
@pishmish downright ugly? really? are we seeing two different phones?
@pishmish
Hmm it doesn't look "ugly" to me.
I think it's sophisticated...which is a break from most Android phones.
The Pixi's form factor is actually quite unique and I think it's a good one.
Personally it's either sliders or full touch screen for me.
@pishmish
Agree. YUCK! Looks Way too long to put in my pocket and if it isn't, then the keyboard is too small.
@pishmish
avoiding the Blackberry form factor?
yes, a genius idea, because we all know how horrible RIM has done with it.
So a guy walks into a bar with his phone......what you guys already know this joke?
@pishmish : they weren't released, they were LEAKED. Probably by Dell, the Engadget team is NOT guilty.
Dang, if things go well, HTC will leak something better, followed by more.
Thanks for losing that phone Gray Powell. The world is changing all thanks to you.
@zerotwone
"I don't need a slim phone"
So you carry a purse, or you clip it to your belt?
A thin phone is a necessity for any man who cares about his appearance. Period. You may not mind stuffing your pockets with boxy crap, but I assure you that you look like a schlub walking around. Ask any woman: There are few better ways to look like a doofus.
@MacRules
What's the matter, afraid the length will dwarf something else?
@pishmish reminds me a little of the new iphone.
@zerotwone
I have no idea which article to comment on anymore. Too fast!!
@dnkoutso I know right?!
You guys hit some leak tonight! Anything else coming? I don't know if I can take all this excitement!
@jrm125
LOL! No, I just think it would stick out of my pocket, and I don't want to get in trouble for something sticking out of my pocket... again...
@Information Central
Dude. Real men don't think that much about their appearance...
@pishmish Yea Im with pishmish treos, centros, pixis, curves, bolds, tours, and pearls all prove that is the most undesired form factor ever.. Hold on.. Oh wait I was wrong.... Sorry guys its the MOST desired smartphone form factor ever lol my mistake..
@Information Central I'll take the best of all worlds, Galaxy S. Slimmer, bigger screen, and a slide out landscape (hopefully on the last part). 4.0" screen and the world's thinnest touchscreen, less than 10mm.
@Information Central
What a tool.
@Peter F : at first I was frickin excited. But then it all died away when I realized that this has 2.8 in screen and the Lightning has 4.2/4.3?. Need bigger screens, I guess Microsoft is coming into my house more often than Apple, unless fanboyism grabs that i4[iPhone 4]. Next computer is definitely a Mac, but next phone is a smoky, stormy. Seeing flashes of lightning too. Pun[s] intended.
@Information Central
Easy on the lame jokes. I do a lot of business with my phone including email and demand much more screen space than this particular Dell phone offers. I'm currently using the iPhone and considering the HTC HD2 because of the larger screen.
The point is that unless your targeting teenagers who are purely seeking the slimmest possible phone, then there is no point for phone makers to go this small with their phones.
@Information Central Good points all.This is a very professionally styled phone that slips right into the inside jacket pocket and would look great on your desk. GQ style
@TechBlogger
What the fuck is wrong with Dell!? They are not known for awesome looking phones?! How the...? What the? What in the...
@zerotwone am i the only one who noticed that the keyboard looks a lot like the palm pre keyboard except for the rectangular shape ?
come on DELL one more leak with WebOs surprise us all :D
@noneym Dude, it doesn't have the Apple logo, so it looks ugly.
@Information Central No a think phone is for a conceited man overly worried about stylishness and not about function. Same people who buy overly expensive clothes because they have a label like "Hillfinger" or "Ralf Lauren" which doesn't look better than any set of generic Levis.
MY biggest complaint on the Pre is the keyboard half is thin, which means a little hard to grip at times (with the default slick back) and the battery life SUCKS becuase they had to squeeze a tiny battery into that thin half.
MY work Blackberry Curve has an Otterbox on it. Big, bulky... and can survive a drop of far longer than anyone would care to drop their phone ^_^.
So little conceited posts like this make me wonder if your cajones was removed by the metrosexual police (coming from a bi guy)
Bring it to Verizon please!
@noneym I agree! I think I may have found my next phone. This thing is gorgeous.
@MacRules
No worries...according to the dimensions it's only 4.7 inches long...so we know you're safe.
@Information Central Maybe you should reevaluate your clothing choices and stop wearing your sisters jeans. Find a pair that fits properly and stop strangling your berries. It's very easy to place any smart phone in your pocket when you wear a proper pair of pants. If you can't do that without looking like you have a novel shoved down your pants then it's time to move over to the men's section when you shop for cloths.
@zerotwone
IncrebiDELL!
@zerotwone I really like it, it reminds me of the E71 but with a touch screen and android, a win for sure, plus it runs Froyo. Reactions. http://j.mp/dell-smoke-impressions
Its just way to long, that would be uncomfortable to hold :)
@pishmish
which is probably what she would say in this case...
@iBuferd
Let me correct that for you
"That's what she said!"
ha :D
@2late2die
I know!! I was trying to say it in a creative professional way... haha instead of the same ol' Michael Scott punch line...
@pishmish
It is only a 2.8 inch screen, so it's probably not as long as you think it is.
I'm gonna choose either the Thunder or Lightning.
That is until Dell leaks out a fifth phone called the ... "Tornado!" or something...
@Meekermoloko
Or "Tricks" & "Ho's"
Those always come in pairs too.
@2late2die Thanks for that :)
@pishmish
It's only 4.5 milllimeters longer than the iPhone (less than 4% longer)
@pishmish
"Its just way to long"
WTF is that supposed to mean? How do you "long" a phone? I'm going to long something else then...
Today is defiantly the day for Dell isn't it?
@iBuferd
No kidding, 4 phones, and well the day is not over yet, any bets on how many more.
@2late2die Well they apparently come in twos (Lightning & Thunder, Flash & Smoke) and two more seems unrealistic. I think this is the last of them.
Hell I'm excited.
@2late2die
Didn't you hear? April is leak month.
@2late2die
I'm still waiting for Verizon Nexus One before I decide for sure on that or the Incredible..
@iBuferd
What does your Incredible and Nexus One decision have to do with anything?
@Broderbund
next 2 are "Shits and Giggles" a little more kitch
after that "Tits and Ass" more rounded edges
Dell's on a roll today
@PENISCRUSHER
It's called market rape. These things look great, let's hope they become reality
@artstate Ah yes, we just learned about market rape in economics class today.
