Okay, so imagine a
Pixi, but awesome. We think you'd end up with something closely resembling the phone that Dell's whipping up with a codename of "Smoke," running Android
Froyo atop a 2.8-inch QVGA display (looks more like WVGA to us, but whatevs). Dell calls it a "non-conforming style," but we just call it drop-dead gorgeous -- assuming the final product even remotely resembles the company's renders -- and they're even promising a price that "won't break the bank," which is always a nice little bonus. The description we're reading of the phone leads us to believe that Dell will be targeting a corporate audience with the Smoke, and that's certainly the clique that tends to enjoy portrait QWERTY keyboards, so this should fit right in amongst the sea of BlackBerrys when it launches in the second quarter of 2011. That's a hell of a wait, yes, but in return, you'll be getting Qualcomm's next-gen MSM7230 processor at 800MHz, a 5 megapixel autofocus cam, 14.4Mbps HSPA, microSD expansion to 32GB, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and dual-mic noise canceling tech in a 12mm package. Check out the full gallery below!
So wait....I'm using the android engadget app and reading this article. Does that mean I'm not allowed to see pics? 'Gallery below'....where????
Are those dimensions correct? The iPhone and this phone have pretty similar dimensions, but proportionally look way different.
Looks cool in a way I'm not so sure about but it is interesting.
I'm hoping Dell doesn't disappoint us all after coming out of left field today because of faulty hardware. It seems as though Michael wants a transformation here.
I don't see any dpad or optical trackpad or anything, how are you supposed to navigate?
@buurgerking ever hear of a touchscreen, genius?
hmm. interesting. Ummm.... is it just me or does the keyboard almost look EXACTLY like a WebOS keyboard?
I wonder if this was a form factor made originally for WebOS if they had purchased Palm?
Very interesting indeed...
Nice looking however...
Com'on DELL! LG CHOCOLATE blended in with Pre?
not so crazy about this one. looks a little too long to be pocketable. i actually prefer portrait keyboards, but i think it should be a slider if it's that large.
Wow, this is just awful.
To all the people saying it sounds great, you're thinking WAY too short-sighted.
Q2 2011?? Are you serious??
By then we'll have phones with twice the horsepower.
Hell, I'm willing to bet they just put "Android FroYo" on there without having seen or written a single line of code for it. They just think it's the next one so they put it on the slides. I bet there will be another version beyond FroYo out by mid-2011 and then this won't seem so great on the software side either.
Q2 2011. You're got to be kidding.
if it's full multi-touch, instabuy. i'm almost ready for my first smartphone and i need it to be sexy, durable, android, keyboard (that doesn't suck) for min requirements. so far anything that does this is unbearably slow or i haven't heard of it
@Ray
tell me about it, went for a Motorola CLIQ(DEXT) as it was cheap on ebay and its slow and is currently stuck with android 1.5.
the form factor i have been looking for but not the screen size i have wanted. no snap dragon either which is a bit crap considering its coming out next year
wouldn't this feel weird in the hand because it's so long?
This is my favorite form factor. I love Palm Pixi, but 1. I can't think of getting an underpowered phone just for the form factor, and 2. Palm devices are still not available here.
But Android. I know it's a great OS but I can't risk getting an Android phone, just to find it getting obsolete within weeks. Dell has their custom skin built over Android which is good and all, but we know what's going on with HTC Hero.
Unless Google tackles the fragmentation in Froyo, I can't even think of getting an Android device, no matter how cool it looks.
Looks like Dell is seriously stepping it up a notch or two.

A very sexy phone but the keyboard looks too cramped for my taste
This seriously looks like a great phone to talk on. The size will feel more natural.
watch out blackberry! dell might give you some competition!
this phone looks really cool!
All of these new Dells look great, I'm ready to loose my e71 for any of these, but most likely for the portrait slider, there are just not enough good choices for these.
put android 1.6 (i don' even need 2.0/1) on the Nokia c5 and i'm sold.
Oh, and put it on t-mobile's 3g. unless it already is, in that case i'll shut my dumb mouth.
Hate it when marketing documentation gets it wrong: the last page pf the docs say it is a J2ME device. Maybe the writers thought it was a Blackberry?
DFP or what? or am i the only one?
wow Pixi form factor clone complete with Palm style orange symbol keys
@cherryboom seriously, are you some kind of cyber-masochist that gets pleasure out of seeing every one of your comments downrated into oblivion?
@cherryboom seriously, are you some kind of kinky cyber-masochist that gets pleasure out of seeing every single one of your fanboy comments downranked into oblivion?
Is this a phone or a SKYSKRAPPER?..........
It's sleek nice and thin. But I don't like the cramp size keyboard just simply ugly ass keyboard.
