HTC Hero won't see upgrade to Android 2.1 until June, at least in Europe
Plenty of UK Hero owners were disappointed this morning upon hearing the news that free Google Maps Navigation had spread beyond the borders of the USA but required Android 1.6 as the minimum OS version. Stuck in their Android 1.5 world, they must have hoped that HTC would just hurry up and open the gates to Eclair heaven, but hurrying up is, regrettably, the opposite of what's happening. Tech Radar heard from a Google rep that the Hero's move to Android 2.1 won't be happening until June, and followed it up with HTC directly. The official response was that a free update for European Hero variants will indeed be provided "starting in June." At least this cloud of disappointment will only hang over Europe, as other territories -- like Taiwan -- might still get the update reasonably soon.

Uh oh...
Gimmie a "F"
Gimmie a "R"
Gimmie an "A"
Gimmie a "G"
Gimmie a "M"
Gimmie an "E"... oh, you get the point.
@thisisit
WHAT THE F!!!!! What the hell happened to MID MAY!!!....
THATS IT! I Plan on getting the EVO ANYWAY! SO TIME TO ROOT THE DAMN HERO!.... I was holding out tryna stay clean and wait patiently... BUT F**K IT!...
@trainwrecka
I'll give you a boot up your ass instead.
IMHO it wouldn't be nearly as annoying if there weren't so many times where HTC have said it's coming out, and then delaying it again and again.
The fact that it's on the Legend is rubbing salt in the wound...after all it's not much different to the Hero really is it?
I would root but I'm a poor uni student who can't afford to buy a new phone if it messes up :(
well it's not a flaw, it's a feature.
and this is THE FUTURE!
@Apple Google Microsoft Grow a pair and root your phone. I pity anyone still using a stock Hero. rooting has been made easy. if you've ever successfully followed simple directions that you found on the internet, you can do it. without causing your phone to implode. and it will give you 2.1, navaigation, less lag, and a unicorn horn.
@ComboBreaker
I plan to get an Evo as well... but I fear we will see the same issues.
@thisisit At least they are promising something, Samsung on te other hand chose to toally ignore all their Galaxy customers that is stuck in plain Sense-less Android 1.5. And by ignoring I mean ignoring. Not answering thousands of emails and not answering any question or stating statement about if they are even thinking in a future plan.
@O Herro
Ok ima do it. XDA still the place to go??
@trainwrecka
"Root the Phone" "Root the Phone" XDA has a Rom 4u
@trainwrecka The Hero is Android perfected and it is an excellent phone. Its just a pain to see how they triped the arrival sched. of this phone. First view* http://bit.ly/hero-controlling-robot
PLEASE WAIT........

Your Android 2.1 update is being prepared.
@trainwrecka You want us to frag you? Gauss rifle or chain saw?
@trainwrecka
Ugh! Jay Leno's ugly chin. How could they design a smartphone with a fault like that. Most people would get plastic surgery for that outcropping.
@ComboBreaker "Europe"
@trainwrecka
to be honest, this is one of the things thats REALLY pissing me off about android as a whole, and starting to make me reluctant to switch to them. they seriously have just about everything on the platform covered, and in spades. But there's no way I want to get a device, then 6 months or a year later find that i'm ''outside the window'' of updates, (some phones have simply never been updated, or are still 1, 2 or even 3major updates behind).
I was reading some stuff about WP7 and their update system. How ALL WP7 phones will be updated by MS not by the OEM, or even worse the carrier. If google did this, i'd be just about sold on getting an android powered phone.
@trainwrecka This is why HTC sucks!!! They would release a nice phone, and then would not want to follow up. Rather, they try to cover the whole spectrum of cellphone market by launching infinite number of different devices, which are also unfortunately destined to become orphan and receive NO SUPPORT in future. I wonder how much more work they need to do on top of the Legend ROM for Hero. If many die-heart developers could manage to port it, So could HTC (only if they wanted to.).
I wish I had not bought this HTC Hero with Telus! Sluggish phone, even worse support from HTC. Motorola is way better, already released updates to all its Droids, and it is not mad about release infinite number of phones.
I used to be a huge fan, and used to advice people to buy HTC phones, but now I do the opposite. Bad company, no support, it sucks..don't buy it!
Anybody (in Canada) up for buying my Hero? Would give it for free (with contract :P)
Hate HTC!!!
@MosesusedaniPad
that chin is God. don't mess with the chin, dude.
FFFFFFFFUUUUUUU HTC!!
@DaveBrubeck So this is only for the European Hero. The Sprint Hero will still get the update in May. I HOPE EVERYONE THAT'S COMPLAINING IS FROM EUROPE! The EVO will get updates faster than the Hero because more people will have the EVO so Sprint and HTC will work harder on getting updates out faster. Also, look how long Apple takes to update their iPhones and iPods, and only the latest devices will get the iPhone 4.0 updates so I don't know why everyone is complaining about a delay. At least you're getting the F'n update. Anyway, EVO 4G FTW!!
HTC you can suck my Di** .
And for people who think I'm still on 1.5 no I'm not , but the problem is all 2.1 rom are buggy ,and until we get the final htc build we will still have buggy roms .
@DaveBrubeck Stop teasing me HTC!
I hope they figure out an easier way to roll out updates in the future. This is just completely sad. I'm not expecting to get 2.1 on my G1, but there are several phones out there that are significantly more powerful than mine and they're running the same outdated operating system. Or worse, they're running an even older version.
people might as well get Evo :]
@victorvelasco1 WeRD. And since when did Jay Leno get in the cell phone business?
I think google should stop giving developers android 1.5.
Just give 'em 2.1
ffs.....i might as well wait for the htc supersonic
@garfieldfriends htc will release supersonic very soon with android 2.1 or may be with android 2.2 but what is the use when you can't get updates?
After 1 year you will see news saying HTC Supersonic won't see upgrade to Android 3.0 till 2013.
@abimanyu so just root it and get the update asap. My hero is running damage rom and it's pretty much flawless. Simple fact of the matter is google rolls or updates to android extremely fast. Most people don't even know they're a few versions behind. If you're going to get upset every time a new version comes out that you may or may not get, then you should stop reading tech blogs. Or get an iphone so you'll have yearly updates instead and you'll be up to date with every other iphone user.
They are doing this in a same way Blizzard is doing SC2...next month...next summer...next year.....
my hero hungers for 2.1 :)
What a load of shit. I feel sorry for my Hero owning friends. :(
@ChazClout : Thank you my friend. (
@One Love
One Love brother.... One Love! :D
Come on, step it up!
Don't worry friends by end of this year HTC will update our hero's.
HTC why not postpone it to 2011 June. You can sell 10 more 2.1 based new models.
@abimanyu You'll get 2.1 when the rest get 3.0. Enjoy!
Meanwhile the rest of us dont even have 2.0 yet and froyo is almost ready. /facepalm
*cue* xda theme music DANANANANA
Seriously tho that sucks.
a common htc attitude
Google really needs to step in to remedy this issue, it's definitely impacting the android market and the operating system as a whole.
@Serus Google doesn't need to do anything. It'll come out when it comes out. Google will still make money either way, so they aren't in a rush.
@Narutogrey I'm referring to the entire fragmentation of the Android operating system across the board. Having 3 (1.5, 1.6, 2.0/2.1) different operating systems to develop apps for is not a good idea. Google needs to either put in place hardware requirements or software limitations to get the upgrades out faster. Microsoft is doing it, obviously apple has full control over theirs, Google is screwing up.
Meh.
Let me refer you all to my good friends Root and VillainRom.
2.1 is just a minor hack away..
@guy3001
Oh, and just to confirm, I absolutely love Android but this kind of crap is enough to defer me to the horrid, filthy, sordid, smug, ubiquitous world of the iPhone. Multitasking is good n all, but it ain't just ain't worth the heartache. It all reminds me too much of the 'nearly' world of Windows Mobile..
@guy3001 More like a buggy hacked 2.1 experience is just a few clicks away
@Luxury Guy
Running 2.1 on my hero completely bug free and optimized. Matter of fact I would wait on the XDA community to do their magic on the official release before I updated to it.
@Luxury Guy
You must be illiterate and blind to think that the 2.1 roms on XDA are buggy. We have had fully functional releases for more than two months. Go look at Fresh 2.0d or the newest DamageControl and tell me 1 think that isn't working on the Hero with those roms. On top of all that they are much faster than the stock 2.1.
@FreakNasty which rom?
Hmmm, Hero finally gets updated when the new iPhone comes out. Slow, buggy and rarely updated vs. fast and shiny. I know what I'm doing in June.
@Mroriginal43 "I know what I'm doing in June."
Hmmm... ok. June 3rd, 8.53?
