Paradigm Shift debuts $130 EER-051D e-reader
They may not quite have dipped into impulse buy territory just yet, but e-readers are definitely getting cheaper, as evidenced by Sony's $169 Pocket Reader, Kobo's $149 eReader and, now, Paradigm Shift's $130 EER-051D. Despite appearances above, this one supposedly has a 5-inch color screen, and packs an FM tuner along with the usual MP3 support, plus a photo viewer, 2GB of internal memory, an SD card slot for expansion, and support for most popular e-book formats (including DRM-enabled ePub books). As you might have surmised from its nondescript appearance and model name, Paradigm Shift is also pitching these at OEMs looking to do a quick rebadge job, but it will apparently be available in the US in its current form through Delstar Wholesale Electronics as soon as next month. Press release is after the break.

5-inch color screen hu? :/
Romantic of Three Kingdoms? Do want.
Name reminds me of Final Fantasy XIII..
@EgoCheck616
that was my first thought too lol
@lilazndude
I thought they were casting a debuff...
why would you have a bigger back button than forward button? That wouldn't seem to make sense on anything other than a web browser??
@RufusWhite
I think maybe you misunderstand which button is doing what here?
That "back" button is the forward button.... as in, "turn this page to the left".
At least that's how I imagine it would be? :)
when they say color are they referring to the case color?
@hawknj
From the press release:
"EER-051D: Unlike most e-readers on the market, the 5" EER-051D features full color TFT high resolution display with enhanced contrast panel designed for ease of reading and long battery life."
It's just an LCD, not e-ink.
It's not e-ink, they say it's TFT, in other words a regular computer screen. They say "Unlike most e-readers on the market"... yeah, well, there's a reason people like e-ink. Can read it in sunlight, easy on the eyes, and uses very very little power.
I don't think they're e-ink displays. e-reader's, yes, but definitely NOT colour e-ink for that price.

"Paradigm Shift" . . . kind of an arrogant company name, huh?
I love to read, but fail to give a shit about e-readers. Why is that?
@jimbonics
your old school like i am... i prefer the feel of a real book... plus... what else am i going to put on my book shelves?
5" TFT? I'll pass. If it were E-Ink and I had any more than one semester of school left I would think about it.
meh.
Yeah...the first digital picture frame is now rebranded as an "ereader".
A new Dalek Paradigm?
Wonder where ebook designers get their education. Wherever it is, I hope it's not expensive.
Isn't that the same as this thing from Walgreens, that's already been shipping for a while?
http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Electronics/OpenBook-E-Book-Reader/ID=prod6016669&navCount=0&navAction=push-product
Good price, but stupid part name. What's the battery life with that color screen? How does it handle PDFs? Why would one want an FM tuner in a book reader?
I like these new cheap (well, cheaper) ereaders that are coming out. I've been reading eBooks on my iPod touch, but I would kind of like to get a dedicated device with e-ink and all that.
But the whole DRM issue concerns me. This seems to have at least some support for DRMed books, but I can't imagine that all the new cheaper ereaders will have it and I would not want to be forced to either purchase from one (or a limited number) of eBook stores or get forced into one (or a limited number) of ereader choices. I think I'll have to stick with my policy of never purchasing any media that contains DRM. Hopefully eBooks will go the way of MP3s and drop it. And hopefully cut down the number of different file formats in the field. I swear it seems like there's 100 different eBook formats out there.
Black and White Screen?
Will it juice, as well as blend?
No e-ink? No sale.
WEIGHT!!!????????
Still want an 8" screen on my e-readers.
"Romantic of three kingdoms"? It's Romance of the Three Kingdoms
You are essentially buying a digital photo viewer.
