PlayStation 3.30 firmware is a go, 3D games support 'prepped'
When the PlayStation blog said firmware 3.30 -- you know, the one that "preps" the console for added 3D support (games for now, not movies) -- was "coming soon," we figured that meant some indeterminate day or week ahead. Not so; we just turned on our Sony consoles and, lo and behold, we got a new update sent our way. There's nothing you can do with the third dimension at this point, but take solace in a handful of Trophy enhancements. And Linux support? Don't be silly, it's not coming back.

I don't have a Playstation 3
@JCreazy You want a Playstation 4?
I went forward in time, bought one, and brought it back.
It's better than xbox 720.
@JCreazy
NOT a good move buying a REGULAR Blu-Ray Player!
Rhyming FTW
@The Advanced Kind
aww... he changed it from "PlayStation 3.30 firmware is a go, 3D games support in tow" to "3D games support 'prepped'" :(
Do you need a 3DTV for it to work or not?
@ALBGunner04
Duh.
Well, I've seen a lot of people trying to "emulate" 3D effects on standard HDTVs (MJ tribute for example), and granted, I've done absolutely no research on 3DTVs, it was a genuine question.
@ALBGunner04
Duh.
@ALBGunner04 - Heres the proper answer you were after.
For the proper 3D support you will need a new HDMI 1.4 TV, so if you want the modern 3D that will be in Blu-Ray and games then you will need a new TV.
However some older TV's out there that can do forms of 3D and are supported by a few things but that support is going to dwindle now this standard has been released. It's unlikely you have one of these older 3D TV's unless you bought it specifically for that fact.
For all other TV's, the only options you really have is to use a form of Anaglyph (the method that needs the 2 different colour lenses in the glasses). This method is completely based around the DVD or game and has nothing to do with your TV and I'm guessing although this method isn't very good it will stay around for quite some time as it reaches the masses.
@FMonkey
I'm 100% sure you have no idea what you are talking about.
http://hdguru.com/lies-errors-and-myths-about-3d/1482/
So the PS3's powerful enough to handle 3d but not PS2 emulation?
@Faceless Troll
lmao @ not powerful for ps2 emulation. Never understud that myself either, it's basically a super computer that can do all these scientific work but it can emulate something from a decade ago.
@Faceless Troll
Er, why yes, rendering exactly the same scene but at slightly different angles every other frame _is_ easier than emulating a high-bandwidth specialized processor's hardware that's only one generation removed. Crazy isn't it? =P
@oGMo
Um it's obviously capable (i.e emotion engine) but if you haven't noticed the PS2 is STILL selling. Why would they let you play old-school games for free when you can spend $100 on a shiny new PS2 to do it?
@Faceless Troll
my 80gb fat PS3 still supports PS2 titles!
@vidplace7
Mine plays all PS2 titles as well.
OP must not have been reading the news for the past three years about how Sony removed features to lower the cost.
No other hardware needed ?
@moodmuzik - a HDMI 1.4 TV.
Not interested until OtherOS finds its way back.
Faceless, if one has an original launch PS3, that's not a worry. 8) Currently DL'ing the update...
We all know Sonys just trying to stay as many steps ahead of geohot as possible, thats the real reason for the update.
1) PS3 + Move
2) Nintendo 3DS
3) Google's official phone for Christmas 2010.
My 3 "gadgets" of 2010.
Watch OUT!! That killer dolphin is going after your CHILD!!!!
oh whats the point. They will just remove it due to security concerns in 3.31
Sony:Blu-Ray, 3D Gaming Support on Systems that weren't originally designed for it, great exclusives (MGS4, Uncharted, GoW, LBP)
Microsoft:HD-DVD(scoff), Loud as a jet taking off(ok, maybe a small plane), Red Ring of Death(enough said)
This would have been the nail that sealed the 360's coffin if Microsoft hadn't dropped Natal to save its console market.
@nwright2 Might want to get that 360 fixed. In my case, my fat PS3 is twice as loud as my 360 Elite when starting up.
Does anyone know if you need a 3D tv for this to work?
@GregMahan Hey you guys, I found a pair of keys for a Bentley... Does anybody know if I actually NEED a Bentley to use them?
@XciteMe
LMAO!!
@XciteMe Hahaha touché my friend, just making sure Sony hasn't come out with any miracle technology I haven't heard about. Well the PS3 is miracle technology already....
Come on guys, leave him alone. Not everyone knows how it all works
@GregMahan - Here is the comment I made to someone further up (just so you don't miss it)
For the proper 3D support you will need a new HDMI 1.4 TV, so if you want the modern 3D that will be in Blu-Ray and games then you will need a new TV.
However some older TV's out there that can do forms of 3D and are supported by a few things but that support is going to dwindle now this standard has been released. It's unlikely you have one of these older 3D TV's unless you bought it specifically for that fact.

@FMonkey Wrong. HDMI 1.4 is not required (though likely the new tv's will have that). The main point is to just look for tv's that are clearly labeled to be 3D compatible. I think Sony, Samsung and Panasonic mostly for now. You will also need to either wait for PS3 to support it, or buy a player that supports 3D blu-ray, in addition to buying shutter-glasses (which costs anywhere from 130-200 each at the moment - though Samsung will give you two pairs for free if you buy a tv AND blu-ray player from them)
Will 3D support be available for all past games (for the most part anyway) or just the new games coming out?
@XciteMe " Oh, look at me, I'm a flippy little dolphin, let me flip for you."
Since 3D movies are out... why not, you know, work on support for those first instead of 3D games that aren't?
@monkeycrackers - Bizarre that this update is just for games. However, you say 3D movies are already out, but as far as I know there are currently none out that support the HDMI 1.4 format and so will not work anyway.
We are really going to need a label on films, games, tv, etc to specify that they use this format as it's gonna confuse a lot of people.
I seriously think this 3D TV thing is a fad and will pass soon
@Girish agreed, just like the internet.
So is this update suppose to convince me to replace my HD projector for a 3D TV, nah
@Kaito Kid
U can compromise and use a 3D HD projector.
Fabulous!
Anyone hear whether this is going to work with Samsunf DLPs? I have run a few searches on Google, but I have yet to find anything difinitive.
@csperino - Are these ones that are already out (sorry don't know anything about these)? If so I doubt it as they need to be HDMI 1.4
@csperino
If you have one of those 3D Ready Samsung DLPs with a 3D Sync input (like I do), the only glasses I can find that will work with it are these:
http://www.i-glassesstore.com/dlp3d-wireless-2set.html
http://hdguru.com/legacy-samsung-3d-tv-owners-will-soon-be-able-to-view-3d-blu-ray-discs-and-3d-directv/1386/
You won't be winning any fashion awards wearing those glasses.
Samsung used to support the format through DDD - but it looks like the company is now just doing software, no glasses.
If you want official Samsung glasses, it looks like they are forcing people to buy new TVs with the sync signal built into the set. Lame.
If my memory serves me right...back in the early to mid 90s wasn't there TV shows that would have specials that were in 3D? how would they send a 3D signal through them old ass TVs? maybe that was a different type of 3D??? maybe it was just a dream I had, lol
@b3rt619 - Anaglyph. It is not a 3D signal, but just 2 views overlayed over each other with different colour values. Then you were cheap paper glasses with 2 different coloured lenses. The lens on the right eye filters out the left image and the lens on the left filters out the right image.
It's a really old method now (Victorians even used it for photos), the colour is bad as and there is usually bad ghosting (some of left view seeable by the right eye). The new methods are full colour and much better quality.
I did a bit of searching and i wasn't dreaming. "Married with Children" Assault and Batteries (1994) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0642223/ (scroll down it talks about it under the "fun stuff" section)
@b3rt619 - Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy it explains the different methods. The old method is anaglyph. The newer digital methods use active shutter glasses or passive polarised glasses.
@FMonkey
hey thanks, ill be doing some reading to catch up on this new "trend" we on our have hands.
Passive polarization is not new. Most 3D movies in theaters used polarized lenses since the 50s.
