VeriFone Payware Mobile iPhone now available in Apple retail outlets, your CC weeps
It's a little past January, but it's not like you've had too much trouble burning through your credit limit these past few months anyway, right? VeriFone -- that company responsible for the other iPhone credit card accessory -- has just announced that its slip-up case is now available in Apple retail stores. For those unaware, this card reader works on all iPhone 3G and 3GS handsets, and there's a built-in stylus for capturing signatures from those arguably shady street-corner transactions that you'll be engaging in. Best of all, the device and app are totally free assuming you agree to a 2-year service contract and a $49 "activation fee," but we'd caution you to read through the fine print under "merchant fees" before tossing away too much of that profit margin.

I hope this does, but have to concede that it probably won't catch on.
Sadface.
@sshole
"Catch on"? You do realize, that "catching on" is completely irrelevant, right? This is a POS solution. If you, as merchant, buy a POS solution, you couldn't care less whether or not it has "caught on". Even if you're the only person in the entire world using the system, you only care that it works as advertised and that the manufacturer will continue to support it for as long as you own the device/solution. In this case, I can't imagine that VeriFone would release a product that doesn't work, or that they wouldn't have deep enough pockets or enough success to support this for years to come.
@tonicboy
I honestly thought you were saying piece of sh**.
@NathanHeil Hah! That's always my first reaction to POS as well.
@tonicboy
I'm assuming you mean something along the lines of "Pay On Sight" :D
@tonicboy except dumbasses in blue t-shirts in Apple store, I have not seen this anywhere else. I don't think there will be stong demand. Btw these devices have been out there for ages (remember Apple store used WinMo devices for this a year ago)
@andthemaniam Point of Sale more likely
@sshole
this is completely different than the one apple employees use at the retail stores. Not quite as built-in looking.
@Jimbojones the whole benefit of this device is that you don't need to use a winmo POS (yes, both meanings). If you have an iPhone, you can now run your own Point of Sale. Dumbass
@sshole I wonder what will be the netizens reaction when squareup has been officially unveiled. http://j.mp/square-payment-christened
@sshole
ANd they say that iPhone is a useless toy that does nothing but Fart.
Well I can see this being used by Pizza delivery boys.
Umm, where is the chip reader? Most banks will reject transactions not authorised by Chip and PIN, so why is Verifone making such an out of date device?
@Joanna D Not in the US
@Joanna D chip is European idea and totally crashed. As you could see few months ago, this pin-to-authorize system can be cracked easily.
You see a stylus! "They blew it!"
@jonmall1441
HAHAHA!
Ewww. That UI looks gross.
@xone Just what I was thinking. Is it too hard to make something that looks nice?
@xone Maybe but its real purpose is to be a POS device. Not to look pretty and try to impress all your friends when its whipped out.
READ: Not a consumer device.
@xone The App was free. But I'm sure they could decide to charge you for a nice version of the App.
@Douglas
Square's app is for free and it's damn sexy. Why can't Verifone do something a startup can do?
@slipdisc
Not for consumers? Then I guess they've made a market where no one will buy it. Whoops, silly them. It's really not hard to make an iPhone app look decent, but they've managed to screw it up - looks KIRFy to me.
@joshl is on the money, Square has made a gorgeous app.
@xone Actually, with the iPhone, it's hard to make it look BAD like that. I'm hoping that's an "artist's rendering" or something, with the WinMo UI 'shopped in.
@slipdisc
It's actually very impressing when you can swipe your customer's credit card, have them sign for the purchase and email them the receipt.
I wouldn't let anyone using this device swipe my card - surely with a jailbroken iPhone, some clever scammer could use the device to clone cards and also program a pin code panel to also get the unsuspecting victim's pin code?Having had my card cloned in the past, somewhere, somehow, this device would not instill confidence.
@andyroo77 my thoughts exactly
@andyroo77
a normal POS device is just as likely to be compromised, and in fact many have been. The question is, do you trust the merchant using this? If you do, then it's not an issue. If you don't, then why are you doing business with them?
@tonicboy
Still dont see where this device fits in other than local markets and car boot sales. The merchants here dont sell high volumes and im sure theywould be put off by the fee.
with a jail broken iphone and the fimilarity of coding on it - surely this has to be easier to hack - right?
@andyroo77 If you've never handed your card to a waiter or waitress, then you can complain. If you have, then....?
@andyroo77
The whole point of this device, as opposed to the Square, is that encryption is performed in hardware, so the iPhone app never has access to the unencrypted credit card data. The data is encrypted before it's communicated into the iPhone.
@tonicboy you can use iPhone to browse internet and easily get virus that way, other similar devices are single purpose devices and are harder to break into.
Next time you go to Apple store, tell them that you refuse to give them CC if they use this creepy device.
FAIL! here's why. It doesn't look like the upcoming iPhone will fit into the slider since it is shaped differently. I guess this is a plus for squareup.com
@pamens88 Ya, I think third-party manufacturers of cases and devices are going to be hit the hardest in the coming weeks, now that the new iPhone's form factor has been revealed.
Not that I'm going to shed a tear for them. $29 for a piece of silicon or plastic?
@pamens88
Merchants who are looking for this as a solution don't care about having the latest IPhone and I'm sure that Apple will be selling the 3GS for sometime to come. By the time that the 3GS goes out of production, Verifone will just update their own form factor...we are not talking about a small company here people.
@CBingo I want to see merchants paying AT&T monthly data and voice charges just to get POS. Seriously, unless you are one man shop and dont want to get easy to use device all other merchants have, then get this. I will be probably shopping somewhere else. I think with few cracks you can easily steal my CC info with this.
@(Unverified)
Hit harder? It just means more unnecessary sales. This is Apple after all.
LOL everyone should start to Photoshop the iPhone 4G pictures into Adds just to add to the hurt to Apple...
F-U Apple!
who do you think you are to keep your next secret product from us a secret!
it doesn't exactly make the iphone pocketable anymore.
wonder if you can sidetalk with it now?
Payware: $49 activation, $15 monthly, $0.17 per transaction, ??% of each transaction
Square: $1 app, $0 monthly, $0.15 per transaction, 2.75% of each transaction
@az1324
If you are swiping every transaction then 2.75% is a HORRID rate. Plus, Verifone is one of the top point-of-sale manufacturers in the world...granted, I hate their equipment but at least I know they will be around for awhile (unlike Square). I've worked in the merchant processing industry for awhile and I can tell you that there is a lot more beta testing behind Verifone's offer then people realize.
@az1324
Payware is good for merchants who process at least $1,000 a month in credit card fees. We use it, and with the fees, our net rate is 1.55%. If you do one or two transactions a month, the Square unit is probably a better idea.
I know that the Apple Store in Atlantic City uses this system or something like it. When I got my Ipad they used it to take my payment. Signing the screen with my finger was a bit on the weird side. I would only do it if I trusted the store that I was in.
do you want a turn by turn voice navigation system usabel in 74 countries and working off line (not kikking your battery) and for free. Stop looking go for Nokia ovi maps! why bother for payable navigation systems or systems usable in one country?
For God sake's Google. Get this to Canada already. I mean, we only border the US and have some of the most advanced cellular networks in the world. I can see why there's a delay! COME ON!!!!
@lerxst
I checked and it is available in Canada as long as you are setup with a US Bank account. These guys are pretty good and answered all of my questions - http://iphonemerchants.com/103.html
Oops. Posted in the wrong entry. Aren't I embarrassed.

The current solution is from Infinite Peripherals in the Apple store, what each sales person uses there.
My wife is actually using the Payware Mobile swipe for her business now. We got it at http://iphonemerchants.com/103.html and it is fantastic. Her customers are blown away, her effective rate (after all fees) is 1.53% and everything was free with a 2 year agreement.
