Super PreKernel is the one-touch way to make your Pre or Pre Plus fly (video)
If you're a Pre or Pre Plus owner who has been watching longingly as we've covered the recent spread of overclocking hacks for the thing, but didn't quite feel up to wading through page after page of forum discussions to figure out just how to apply them, the process just got a easier. Like, a whole lot easier. Super PreKernel enables you to go to 550, 600, 720, and even 800MHz with just a single tap. And, when it's time to put on those fake glasses and play Clark Kent, you can drop back down to 500MHz just as easily. It's all thanks to a number of Palm-loving hackers who have put together a truly moving video demonstration of the whole process that's embedded below. We encourage you to enjoy it now, because the selection of copyrighted musical accompaniment for the clip will probably result in it surviving about as long as a bottle of Superman's chosen hair product.
Update: We got a note from caj2008 that an updated version has been released, this one fixing a few issues and offering better compatibility with OS 1.4.0, 1.4.1, and 1.4.2.

Awesome work Pre modders. Time to fire up my Pre to 800mhz.
@zeroinfinity2
Now THATS magic!
It's nice to see that SOMEONE still loves the Pre.
@SlaterGS
Definitely Real Magic, Now we just need palm to keep itself alive. I am rooting for you Palm! Live Palm, Fucking Live!!! and Go Kill that Bizarro Iphone.
@Smart People Play Tuba
I'm not really a Pre fan, I'm more of a webOS fan.
@nickcraze
Don't you mean...monnnndo bizarrroooo?
Why would a Pre need to be faster? So it can download all of the apps available in like 3 minutes instead of 10?
@steel
I don't even know where to begi-
Oh, you're a troll...
In that case... *hits the "-" button*
Super TRO-O-O-O-OLL!
@Outsider
Jk, dude. I was interested in the Pre back before they cemented their own feet via the locked contract w/ Sprint. Not a good move. Poor developer uptake as a result just finished the deal. I hear it's great to use, but you have to admit that it's dying.
You are forgiven.
As for me, I've been sitting over here in AT&T Land, waiting patiently for a WebOS device (or ANY compelling non-Apple device, for that matter), and now that the Pre Plus is actually on the way, Palm is collapsing.
- - - FACE PALM - - -
(pun intended)
@Smart People Play Tuba I feel your pain... The wait has been way too long!
@steel
Well if 3 minutes a get all the apps i need, that means i don't have to go through all the 100,000 fart apps that cause me to waste time. Since we all know if you want a Toy OS, you get an iPhone, but if you want a Monster of a phone(hardware aside) then you get Palm phone. Here's hoping for a soon to be release Palm phone...
Love the pic.
@Outsider
I love the fact that he's a Lehigh grad.
Great..This should keep my Pre interesting until i upgrade to the Evo..Sorry Palm love WebOS but without new hardware my little Pre is not gonna make it much longer.
@neeko18
Totally agree. These hacks have made my pre much more enjoyable, but I am so ready for new hardware or I'm jumping the WebOS ship. Palm, wheres that C40?
@neeko18
have you seen this little nugget of in? & yes the guys @ precentral have said the person that posted this is a trusted source & has provided reliable info in the past!!
"---Hey Soorma, yess i am lucky enough to be verry much so in the loop involving upcoming Sprint devices. I have a friend that works in an upcoming products dept., he was the guy in the super soinc video with gloves hahaha
The palm C40 is going to be quite the device. Naturally we are talking 4G and flash. The device will be "naturally simple" in harware as the pre, but you won't confuse the 2 phones haha. Bigger screen 1ghz processor and a new "breed" of webOS made exclusively for 4G. If you are a webOS fan this will be your dessert. Late summer/early fall 2010----"
Now sign me up for WebOs w/ some 4G flavor & I'll jump on this if the above specs are true & I don't care what it will cost. It'll be in my hands day one!!

@KULawHawk
I know Sprint doesn't want to take any Evo sales away, but if the C40 exists and will be released by fall then Palm needs to announce it before the Evo goes on sale. If the only thing Sprint is going to get is the Pre Plus then I'm going to have to abandoned this doomed ship. I'm really hoping that won't be the case.
sorry, but where to download these files?
@mcmarrocco well they'll be coming to Preware in the coming days, but as of now you can only install them through WebOS Quick Install.
@haubey
yes, i understand about quick install. it's up and running right now, i just don't know where the 2 kernel files are to download?....can you link me?
@mcmarrocco http://www.l337tech.com/webos/apps/
@haubey
The custom kernals are already in Preware. You need to add the 1337Tech custom feed to see them though.
@Garrett92C what's the URL for the feed?
I've been using the 800MHz kernal for about a month now and love the increase in speed. It does kill the battery pretty quick now though and gets hot quickly while charging and using an app like Pandora at the same time. I highly recommend installing the "device temperature warnings" and "temperature in device menu" patches to monitor your Pre's temp. I've heard if the device runs at 45°C or higher for too long you can brick your Pre.
The big problem with these patches for me is how quickly the battery gets killed. The battery for me isn't amazing to begin with, and as soon as I increase the speed to 600 MHz (using the CPUScaler app) I find the battery life drains extremely fast. It's nice to have the option to turn up the speed but I have been keeping it at the stock underclock so it lasts for more than a few hours.
@tehpinner yeah the battery sucks at 500MHz already. I always have a charger near by, so I'm never too concerned. I even have the Sedio big battery and I can drain it pretty fast.
@tehpinner
Then this must be a dream come true for you. Run it at 550 until you need the extra speed, then bump it up to 800 with a simple button press. When you're done take it back down to 550 and keep on saving your battery.
@Peeler Not everyone suffers from decreased battery life. In fact, if you read the hundreds of forum posts (for the .sh and ipk as well as Super Pre kernel, which all use the same Kernel patch) you'll see that most people have seen no measurable impact on battery life. I've been running at 800Mhz for nearly a month with no noticeable battery decrease. Neither have I run into heat issues. Results may vary... but if you have a Pre, you're crazy not to boost your speed. Benefits far outweigh any detriments.
@bypod Personal experience here... my Pre actually runs longer if I have the 600MHz fixed patch.
I find it ironic that youtube kept buffering lol
haha best creative by engadget, ever *period*
iphone is my kryptonite ;o)
I want that guy who made iBoot to setup some OC goodness so I could run android speedily. Quite an interesting development for noob pre owners tho.
See this boys and girls? This is what you can do when you pair the best OS on the market with the best hackers.
WebOS for life!
my pre at 800mhz rocks. my batter life is actually better now since it's not churning twice as long to get something done. maybe if i was playing the 3d games or something it may drain faster, but for normal everyday stuff, it's actually an improvement.
@jonyah Exactly.
When tasks take about half the time they used to because the speed increase I actually don't use the phone for as long (extending battery life). When the phone is idle it doesn't bleed power anymore than it would at stock 500MHz.
Nice, I think it might be time to overclock my baby.
an unrelated question, what's that song in the second part where he demos how to install super prekernel?
@ZachZ It's "Superman" by Five for Fighting
I have a "friend" who has a Pixi. Will this work for me err I mean him?
@rottenapple nope you can't, I mean, tell ur friend... ;)
@rottenapple unfortunately not. The Pixi uses a different processor
well that fucked up my phone...
I've had a Pre since November and I finally gave in to set up Webos quick install yesterday and man have I been missing out lol.
I just started using this new SuperPreKernal just now and bumped up to 800Mhz and it's a pretty decent bump in speed and I might use it once in a while, I'm not really into overclocking, but in case anyone is wondering this app works really great and it can be found on the precentral forums or do a google search for super prekernal.
I've been using the 720 patch for a while now, and can still make it through a full day; and I'm on my Pre a LOT. Your mileage may vary given different factors, of course, but one thing is certain: I never want to go back to 500MHz again. This thing just flies even at 720!
wish they had shown what it was like running the kernel.
Installed this app as soon as it came out yesterday morning. One of the best Freeware apps out there.
However, I've noticed that my Universal Search is, per say, "Broken."
When I type in something, it no longer searches the phone for applications, or even contacts, with similar characters. Very annoying.
On top of that, I have to tap the find button every time, to bring down the dropdown search bar (The ones searches Google, Google Maps, Twitter, and Wikipedia). VERY annoying.
I'm pretty certain it's not the app, but just a heads up out there to anyone else that may experience this problem
@iDamien
Just tested it out and you're right. That's really annoying, as I use universal search all the time.
@jcasti universal search is working fine for me after installing Superprekernal... Maybe you should check your patches in quick install.
