If you look at Palm's financials the company NEEDS to be bought out by someone who can inject long-term fresh cash into the company. Without that Palm could easily run out of cash and be bankrupt by the end of the year. Of course Palm's CEO is going to say they "want to remain independent". That's why they pay him. Only an idiot would come out and say "we're weak, failing, and running out of cash and time...someone please save us!"
@ByronGman From the way Palm's CEO has been behaving repeatedly, they look way too arrogant given their financial decay. They still believe they can play in a market where iPhone, Blackberry and Android rule the roost. Palm is too late and doesn't have the mindshare to get their phones going. Who wants to license a dead-end OS?
Palm you had a good run. Employees better start jumping ship because it's sinking fast. Your CEO is holding out for a sweet buyout when there is none. Take whatever price you can get because otherwise you won't get any offer. And when it comes to that and there's no money left in the piggy bank, it's all over. Shut the doors, chain the handles and bye bye.

I'm wondering if this has something to do with the fact that Palm itself isn't quite ready to be bought out:

@John52
Oh, I know they need to be bought out, I am just wondering whether there are any kernels of resistance that would push some potential buyers away.
