HP ships Swing motion controller hardware with Pavilion PCs in India
The vaguely kidney bean-shaped device above is actually, believe it or not, yet another motion controller. Details are scant, but apparently the HP Swing is being bundled with HP Pavilion desktop PCs in India (starting at 29,990 Rupees, or about $670). The thing will not be available separately, and as far as we know there are no plans to release it in the states. We're not saying that it won't be released in the US, but we are saying that we probably don't care. Either way, we'll let you know when we hear more.

Errr. why? Why do you want to swing you arm around on your desk?
@pika2000
On your desk????
Dude this is made to use with beamers, or with my 60" Kouro, or with minority report style setups, or with.. something cool.
Belive it or not man , but reality does not end at the edge of your desk.
@pika2000 You wouldn't, but an airmouse isn't bad for a HTPC.
Better yet though are air-remotes like the Gyration Remote that has Windows Media Center buttons and the like in addition to be able to be used as an airmouse.
@Plexus To do what? Unless there's another layer of UI that is tailored for this thing, it's pointless. Yeah, it's probably fun for like 2 minutes, but I guarantee you that you'll pick up that keyboard/mouse after that, and this thing will stay in the drawer for good.
Remember, this is not bundled with a PS3/360, this is bundled with an HP desktop. I guess HP can put in a UI that force people to do some gestures if they want to uninstall their bloatware. :P
@pika2000
To be honest, not quite many people in India can afford this. It is a sort of place that is lacking behind. Of course, every guy migrates to other countries and never come back, thus all the talent never comes. India will stay behind. This won't make them work harder anyway.
@pika2000 Gestures suck, but it is really fun playing halflife with a wiimote over bluetooth if this works the same, and if far away w/ a projector screen or big screen the new ones are generally quite accurate and definitely a breeze on navigating the gigantic button interface of windows media center... but w/ no WMC button, laaaaame.
@Plexus
What! There is a world outside the desk..
I saw a movie about this years ago but I'd didn't believe it
@pika2000 Do you guys seriously not see how this could be useful on a home theater PC? REALLY?
@tcheramie How? How is this going to be useful in HTPC vs a regular media center remote? The UI in media center/boxee are tailored for regular remotes, not for some gesture gimmicks.
@pika2000 I guess its the same reason why motion controller was executed. Reactions -- http://bit.ly/sony-move-reactions-impressions
@Plexus I still think Microsoft is going to make a Project Natal type piece of hardware for the PC. Maybe not for Windows 7 but for a more finger (natal) friendly Windows 8.
I don't know man, I could by a lot of deku shields with 29,990 Rupees...
@williamtsims buy*
@williamtsims
Why waste money on that trash? Invest in the Hylian model, that thing will last forever.
@williamtsims Eastmost penninsula is the secret.
Yes!!! I am indian!!! PAPA! LETS BOOK A FLIGHT!!
Do you REALLYYYY want to know that?...giggty
@Glen Quagmire This was a reply to pika2000 not sure why its down here
@Glen Quagmire giggty giggty goo
I'd better start cuttin' some bushes and grass....
@Ahmedz I roll everywhere because I think it makes me go faster. :S
who do I contact on earth for an intergalactic patent abuse claim? the empire had motion control first!
Schwwwing
Hmm.. i can't understand the negativity by Engadget here. Motion controller for PC gaming sounds like a good idea to me. If I can plug it into my HTPC, and if they can give me even a couple of decent sports games.. I won't buy a Wii.
@arkavat
Instead you'll buy a nearly 700 dollar kidney bean. Well...I guess you're HP's market, here.
@collindow
It's $700 for PC+Monitor+ Keyboard +mouse+speakers+ the motion controller
That's how much we pay in India for a branded PC. No one is going to buy the PC for the controller and throw the PC away.... If i have to choose between Dell and HP with this controller... why not?
What is the point of this pointless device? Windows does not include this up front, maybe it might be used for something or the other, but is not in depthly used in the os (as compared to a mouse or keyboard for instance)

@prodigypv cause they can. you've a pointless question.
@benderfender I'm sorry but could you please rephrase your post, it makes no sense...
@prodigypv
It makes perfect sense.
I think "What is the point of this pointless device?" is the very definition of a pointless question.

Based on the shape, I'd say this is much more deserving of the name iPad than the Apple product.
@glennS More like iTampon, or iDildo.
inb4gimmickymotioncontrolprograms.
sorry, what is it for?
@all
I think you've all got it wrong. It says it will be bundled with PCs which start at $670. Its the price of the PC along with the controller, not just the controller.
@dpacmittal
I agree.... its the starting price of the Pavilion desktop PCs not the controller.
@Eli Haj
I'm pretty sure I remember having a Sidewinder Game Pad that had motion sensing in the late 90's.

Ah, yes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_SideWinder#Freestyle_Pro
If this was an Apple product, I bet all youropinions would be different. I would want to see avideo demo of this before I judge it.
I can tell you definitively that this controller is the same one used by Targus, who is test marketing "FlingTV" in the USA (I had one of these controllers last month for about a week).
They shipped it with their own software, as well as Tiger Woods Golf (Not the violent, full contact sport with a Sweedish blond that I was expecting). I could see the controller as a replacement mouse for some applications.

(But the controller has changed)
Why not just use a wiimote? It's cheap and pretty easy to set up on the PC. I mean, just get a copy of Wiinremote or Xwii and in less than five minutes, you're ready to go.
