Additional trophy sorting and 3D gaming readiness should have been enough to satisfy and PS3 owner after the latest v3.30 system update (hey, at least it didn't
take anything away this time) but there's a couple other surprises in store. If you're the kind of person who loves (or hates) their beeps and bloops, there's a toggle for Bitstream Direct (output audio with the original digital signal prioritized) or Mix (mixed with sound effects such as button sounds and then converted to bitstream format) on Blu-ray movies, while future VAIO PC owners can get a taste of remote play without
any PSP intermediary. Other, unconfirmed, reports include updated Flash compatibility, enhanced region free Blu-ray movie playback, the
usual complaints of bricked or otherwise busted consoles as well as erroneous claims of an updated EULA that maintains Sony can update your PS3 whenever it wants (newsflash - it's always said that.) Sure, you can always wait for a
custom build from Geohot instead, but we've got a Fat Princess to rescue.
@savarese04
Features? More like tweaks to stop piracy, they don't wanna end up like the 360 which is Pirate City. There hasn't been many decent new features with the continuous updating. At least M$ adds a few useful things when updating the 360. Unless you forgot the update that locked people off of PSN or the one before last that took away a feature. Don't go praising Sony for rapid updates, add a useful feature like cross game voice chat to the PSN or an improved XMB, then i'll get excited about rapid updates, until then i'll be fine with seasonal updates like I get with my Xbox that actual include useful features.
@misterhearn
I just wish they didn't take an hour to download and install, it's not like I'm on dial up here.
@misterhearn
Trophies, Profile 2.0, soon to be Blu-ray 3D, Folding@Home, PlayStation Home, Photo Gallery, text chat...yeah, you're right. Sony doesn't add ANYTHING...
@Dr Blight
Again I said recently, how long ago did trophies come? How long ago did 2.0 come? These are all things that should have been there from day one anyways but all the stuff you mentioned is old. As far as 3D Blu Ray support, thats a rumor, again don't give Sony credit for something they haven't done or committed to. It still doesn't justify updating nearly every two months either, I'm calling shenanigan on this
@misterhearn
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/04/21/ps3-3-30-system-software-update/
they do this everytime they release a firmware
@misterhearn "These are all things that should have been there from day one anyways but all the stuff you mentioned is old."
Thats like saying the Xbox should have had HDMI from day one.
@Nomi
The Xbox should have had HDMI from day one and that's why they added it later because they messed up but we're talking about software not hardware, I said that it seems as if the ps3 gets a firmware update almost every two months, most of it lately seems like bloatware. Fanboys have been getting real butt hurt about the ps3 lately geez
Windows is fast becoming THE platform for console-PC genesis.
FAT PRINCESS!!!
I am perfectly fine with Sony deleting something that maybe 1-5% of PS3 owners used in return for the majority of things they have added over the years.
@Jason B Thank you. Who the hell used that feature?
@Jason B
Agree with that, especially since the "feature" the removed had nothing really with gaming to do.
@Jason B Yeah a feature that let people make their own games had nothing to do with gaming
You morons
@Extinction
That was one really lame excuse...moron!
i won't be impressed with any gaming console until they have removable graphics cards with possibly SLI, upgradeable ram, etc. basically a mini PC with a linux based OS that can play standard computer games, but isnt a standard computer. obviously computers have the best graphics by far. the only reason we have game consoles is because not everyone can afford a gaming rig
@vanwazltoff That kind of defeats the purpose of a game console. Consistant specs allows the developers to optimise for a platform, and ensure that the gameplay experience is the same for everyone. Besides, even though the PS3 is running a custom 7800 and the 360 a custom x1900, and they look just fine to me.
@sideways8
no, they can make a minimum graphics level that suits the standard configuration, but expand on the graphics capabilities it the user decides to upgrade there graphics card[s]. maybe the games graphics will changed based on scale of 1-10, 1 being the base model 10 being the highest configuration. basically its the same concept of modern PC games, 1 games suites all but a higher graphics level can be used with a better card
@sideways8
also most games for the ps3 are made in 720P, 1080 is only really used for movies
@sideways8 thats bull, the ps3 CPU is all it has with its 8 cores, it has no additional video card, all the work is done in the powerpc. You better check your "facts"
@boibo Wow, way to be wrong. From Nvida's own website
http://www.nvidia.com/page/console.html. and Sony:
http://us.playstation.com/ps3/techspecs/120gb.html
Douchey response and wrong. Damn.
@boibo Hey dumbass, there is a thing called the RSX reality synthisizer for graphics. It is a modified 7800, you go check your facts. Hell even my 10 year old N64 has a GPU. You, my friend, are an imbiscile.
I'm guessing this is a UK thing since the people in the advert are dressed like walking topshops :P
@GeorgeRobo - wow...i thought the exact same thing...
I wish the ps3 had better bitstream options. I prefer to bitstream standard Dolby Digital and DTS from DVDs, but I don't want to bitstream the lossless HD versions on Blu-rays. This means I need to switch between bitstream and LPCM whenever I switch between DVD and Blu-ray. There should be a way around this. There are a few ways to fix this and they'd all be simple to implement. I wish they would.
@morphinapg
Good lord the first sensible comment in this thread. This whole thread is beyond pathetic.
Anyway, so whats up with the bitstream update? It used to be impossible to bitstream DolbyHD. So what does this update do?
@ArthurDent
pretty much it just allows you to use bitstream mode on Blu-rays while still being able to hear the button sounds on the menus. It doesn't bitstream Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD:MA for phat models.
@morphinapg The solution is to stop using bitstreaming. There is no advantage to it and it's clearly making your life difficult.
The update just seems to add mixing functionality to the existing bitstreaming support.
@spin cycle
My receiver can't apply processing to multichannel LPCM, so I use bitstreaming for what I can. With bitstreaming I can use equalization as well as 5.1 to 7.1 upconversion. I can't use those with multichannel LPCM.
"Sure, you can always wait for a custom build from Geohot instead, but we've got a Fat Princess to rescue."
Best comment ever
I only want to see ad2p support for the dam console, why is it so hard to add stereo bluetooth for playing and watching movies??
and dont give me that crap about audio quality vs cable or wireless headphones, BT ones like the nokia bt-905 or even the SONY dr-bt50 are very decent and have an already available mic for chatting.
my speakers/surround sound is great but sometimes I want to play without having to wake everyone in the house when a grenade goes off.
wireless stereo headphones where art thy?????
@Marcial a2dp sorry, typo
anyway that profile is a software update, ps3 already has everything they need to implement it, why havent they?
I didnt know hipsters played PS3. I figured they only played the NES. Hmm..
Can I haz mkv support please.
i've got a fat princess to rescue too! as well as a fantasy to finalize
region free that cool
slightly off-topic:
I noticed the next story up about the Skype HD Cam.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/25/freetalk-everyman-hd-webcam-up-for-pre-order-at-skype-store/
I couldn't help but wonder for the system that supposedly does "everything" (except for Linux), where is our skype?
PS3 already has a webcam; what's the deal? We could have done it through Linux, but wait, Sony took that away!
On top of that, a standalone Sony BluRay player can actually out-do the PS3 for streaming audio:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665968161&XID=F:BDPN460:sony
It's got built in slacker. Yes, you can do slacker/pandora through the crappy webbrowser, but that's a pain.
Sony needs to take a page out of the iphones playbook and realize that the PS3 can do more than just Bluray and games, but they need easy to use apps that work with their interface.
please be compatible with ipod touch in the next update
So with Bitstream Direct... does that mean my fat PS3 will be able to pass HD Audio to my receiver, which will then light up Dolby True HD, or DTS HD?
I know I get this with PCM already, but I'd like to see it on the receiver like my Slim buddies get.
@AdvilYum
ah, never mind, it's only through optical anyway. So why can't they enable this through HDMI (for the Fat)
