Now, what do you know about that? Our very own Chris Ziegler stopped into Best Buy (undoubtedly right after leaving CB2) and spotted something we didn't expect to see just yet... the
Sony Dash. That's right, the Dash - which is available for pre-order but wasn't supposed to hit retail until April 29th -- is already on the shelf. Now, there was only one unit available and it was just squeezed in between some other wares, so we're not sure if it was put out by accident or what, but if you're really dying to get your hands on one a few days early, hitting up your local BB might turn up something. Let us know in the comments if you nab one!
Update: Chris reported back to us to say that when he tried to purchase it, it came up with a price of $999 and a code of "DO NOT SELL." He was also told to come back next Friday if he wanted to purchase it.
$999? pshhh, pocket change.. hahaha
@artstate
DO NOT WANT.
@artstate that's nothing - I went into EB games to check out WoW cataclysm and it was priced at $9999 :D
@xaduurv
The sad part is that some people would still buy it at that price...
WoW has fanboys like no other.
@SolidSnake Except that's just a placeholder; they still can't sell it.
@artstate
Engadget shops at Best Buy?
all hope is lost
@artstate
come back next friday? ..nah ...
@artstate What you should've done is go to the corner of the store, do a secret unboxing then leave...
@ToniCipriani That is hilarious!
@artstate Since it has a capacitive touchscreen that’s twice the size of a Chumby, a faster processor, and 4 times more memory, all at the same price as a Chumby Classic, it looks like a great product..

@WhitecollarcriminalFinancial
Go to their website. I was looking for VAIOs (last resort) and I saw the dash. That's Dash minus the capital D plus the lowercase d.
It's a personal internet device.
Blah. Sony's grasping at straws here.
Crap. Computers is gettin' too smart for us.
Its too bad that Sony doesn't have a CEO that can woo the masses with words like "magical" and "revolutionary" to make them buy this device instead of two or three much more useful netbooks.
@NikAmi
.......What? this is like $200 you can't get one useful netbook for that.
@Complex
dude, he was talking about steve jobs. it was supposed to be sarcastic. SMH
@NikAmi If you failed to notice that it's like two inches thick, only runs Chumby widgets in the lower-left frame, and oh yeah HAS TO BE PLUGGED IN TO WORK, then I'd say they already worked their magic on you.
@NikAmi Stop by an Apple store and play with one. You'll want it.
So pay the extra $800 and give us an early unboxing and review XD
@Edobe
Engadget =/= Gizmodo
@JeremyBenthem
< or >?
I wanted this when I first saw it.
Then I thought about it and I realized it's almost completely pointless amidst all these awesome tablets and large smartphones.
Would've been amazing like three-ish years ago. Too bad.
@arboreal snowman
I'm the same way but I went ahead and pre-ordered one of these. Funny how the original ship date was pushed to the 29th from the 12th but I'll live... seeing how I don't even need this thing. My gadget obsession is spiraling out of control, but I was able to resist that other tablet thingy at least.
Better buy it before Gizmodo gets to it!
@bdkennedy1 Well they would have to steal it THEN sell it to Gizmodo.
@DizWhiz thats what i wouldda done., just pay some kid 20 bucks to lift it for you and meet somewhere across the parking lot..
@bobthetechguy more like $5000......
How is it that I stop by Engadget several times a day and still don't know WTF a Sony Dash is?
@ToeCutter
You never knew, Engadget only details apple items like crazy they really dont care about other things.
@the real deal
Now i don't really like apple but this isn't that great of a product it pretty much a photo frame from what i have seen so why would you give it the same coverage as the ipad (i am assuming that is what you were talking about). I didn't like the amount of ipad coverage either but this doesn't deserve that much
@ToeCutter If a netbook and iPad mated and had a child with a chromosome missing, the Sony Dash would be the result.
@the bandit I live in wasington DC and the number of non Americans that seem to be crowding Apple stores around here is quite impressive. I even once saw an entire tout group of Asian tourists in one!
All you have to do is actually handle an ipad to see why all the buzz. In terms of usability nothing I know of comes close. It's shockingly good!
@Ducman69
OMG, this brought actual tears to my eyes (laughter, not sorrow ;-)
@ToeCutter
Lol. I was thinking the same thing.
I could buy Netbooks for the average American family for $999.
I believe it's actually $199.... must be a way of stopping purchases for now
@koppit Yep your right about that. But i guess you could demand a price match to the web site.
@danhawk911 oooh, what a deal for a piece of tech I'd never use :D
I love my iPhone haha
@SuperModified Huh? Ok thats for sharing.
I remember seeing these at bestbuy like a month ago, so these people fail. It was right next to the Zunes.
@APV your thinking of the there super ass annoying alarm clock that i would love to go and shoot it with my ak-47,
@danhawk911
No, I was thinking of this. I was surprised at the fact that Sony was making something like it. Never heard of it before then. So I think I know what I saw.
@APV
That's an alarm clock. This is a tablet. You are fail.
@JW
Well, an alarm clock with internet. They are still two completely different things.
Do not sell? I thought they did that will items at best buy , by over charging for everything they sell!
ziiiiinnnggg!
@Hydra
What do you mean? I got a great deal on a Monster cable there last week! It's was only like $200 ! ! !
Crap, I misspelled it. I meant to say:
Monster® cable
@Hydra Actually the sales rep goofed. It's $199 with an $800 mandatory charge for Geek Squad to "optimize" it (find all the crappy apps and load them on the device).
Phew $999 is just the price I was willing to pay...$1000 would of been just too much IMO.
Really? A personal internet viewer? Sounds great, not .
