Palm Pixi: zero dollars with two-year contract on Sprint
This doesn't really come as a surprise, but it's welcome news regardless. Sprint is now offering the Palm Pixi free with a two-year contract on its website. The deal isn't to be had in retail stores quite yet, but we assume that's also in the cards as well. The Pixi -- which has a slower processor than the Pre and lacks WiFi -- is a handset we always thought was destined for the zero dollars on contract scheme, so like we said, we're not surprised. Regardless, if you've been wanting a Pixi but couldn't stand the idea of laying out any cash for it, well, now's your chance.

It took this long?
@yulebellow Yeah, isn't every phone eventually "destined for the zero dollars on contract scheme."
@Spiraling Shape iPhone?
@theSixFive yeah, iPhones are just on garbages everyday nowadays.
@yulebellow
It means someone's got lots of inventory, and needs to empty it quickly before you-know-who goes belly up (or down).
@mikmik111 WTF does that comment mean? Speak English.
@bullshitexpresscom Hahaha!
:prayer: please please please let this be a sign of new hardware coming!
@sweet greggo and not the pre/pixi plus!
@sweet greggo
Or bankruptcy.
@sweet greggo
It's a sign of a warehouse full of Pixies that needs to be evacuated pronto. The end is, unfortunately, nigh.
@TareG ya there probably is a warehouse full-o-pixi's but palm has noted that there is new hardware on the horizon... the end is'nt gonna be this year but unless palm starts making profit soon i'd say by late next year there done
@sweet greggo
Rubenstein already said Palm is working on bringing out new phone models during an interview, it's just a matter of time... but when they do become available, Palm's fate will resolve around it, just like it did when the Pre was announced.
@bureX
I know the new hardware is coming, I just want to know when.
@bureX I just don't know how many more lives Palm has left, sadly.
Still don't want.
Rather wait for the pixi plus.
@DallasB Wait? It's been out for a long time and isn't very impressive, at this point I'd say it's better to wait for the next gen if it ever exists.
I still can't get over the fact that people get so crazy about the prices of new phones when you're blowing 20x that much on your service.
@Evan actually it's 80x in this case. But I'm not gonna complain having two unlimited data phones for $85/month.....Your move.
lol should have been free since day 1 the pixi SUCKS. no wifi and small screen.. now the pre should go down to 29.99 make room for the Palm c40
It's still a waste of contract money.
What's that stench?
free + no contract as in pre-paid... then im sold. this is a toy at this point considering newer competitors will be here soon. u screwed up bad palm. really screwed up bad.
I think the real story here is how dumb it is that Sprint didn't do this MONTHS ago. I'm a big WebOS fan but I say big f\/¢k1n6 deal. You long since been able to get a Pre Plus on Verizon for free. Per the other commenter, yes, hopefully this means they're trying to clear out inventory for better hardware.
@karlfife yea i'm somewhat baffled why this is news. I noticed this last night and that HTC TP2 went to $199 on contract from $299. That's more worthy than this. Perhaps if it was titled, "too little, too late," it would be more appropriate. Heck, Sprint still has the Pre for $149 while you can get two Plus phones at another for $50. Yay....ummm oh nm.
of course its free, soon every phone in the Sprint lineup will be free as they scramble, desperately, to find market share.
Sprint, here's a hint: fix your network, fix your infrastructure, fix your awful store and 800 number support, THEN worry about 4G. There's a reason you're bleeding a million subs a quarter, and its not because your phones are priced too high, its because your network is GARBAGE.
@Axtell bull...
@Axtell Hmmrrrmm...No, just no.
@brokensticks
Actually there could be some truth to it.... I hope HTC has a Supersonic in mind for other carriers, down the line. The EVO 4G is too good to launch exclusively on Sprint.
@Axtell wow your an idiot. I don't even know where to start pointing out what's wrong about your comment. A crappy company is at&t, but people don't care because of the iphone. Sprint has great service and prices, better 3G coverage then at&t plus they roam free on verizon. Stop taking all the bullshit that's been told to you as fact.
No no, the article title is wrong!:
"Palm Pixi Finally Costs What It Should've Cost, Soon To Be Offered With Additional $50 Rebate"
Crappy phone and crappy service no thanks. You get what you pay for. I heard nothing but complains about Sprint in Miami.
Go to Verizon, and look at the no-contract price of the Pre. It's more expensive than the Desire.
@pika2000 I meant the Incredible.
Where did Palm go wrong? WebOS still looks very promising, yet their hardware is just a big yawn.
@soccerpro100cn Palm went wrong when they did an exclusive deal with the only carrier that was losing customers and a handset that is locked into 1 country. Then instead of quickly pushing out a UMTS ver of the Pre worldwide, they got distracted with their silly game with Apple and did the wifi-less Pixi, while Android at the same time was gaining momentum. The rest is history.
Umm what I want to know is when are the PLUS versions of the Pre and Pixi coming to Sprint.
I'd like to get one of those for my mom whos on Sprint. OR if Palm truly does have some new hardware in the works then I'm willing to wait to see what that is.
On a side note what's the best cheapest netbook out there right now?
@TheLondonExchange I'm gonna take a guess and say never.
There it goes another so called iPhone Killer failure !!!
@Shark Tek I don't think the Palm Pixi was ever considered an "iPhone Killer".
The Pixi was never supposed to be a "iPhone Killer". I get tired of that shit.
And I mean tired of hearing "iPhone killer" for every smartphone even though the company never meant it to be.
@Shark Tek
Yeah I'm one of the biggest Apple Supporters around here and that's just a PLAIN LIE.
The Pixi was NEVER an iPhone Killer
The Pre on the other hand WAS...
Lets get the facts straight opening poster....
Anyways both phones failed financially. That can't be disputed...although webOS itself isn't a failure in my eyes. It's probably the 2nd best mobile OS out there.
@wmurch3
@soorma
More than 200,000 hits on Google about Palm Pixi considered iPhone killer.
Thank God wasn't ever considered as one.
The list keep growing: G1, MyTouch, CliQ, WM6 Base Phones, etc ...
@Shark Tek
Dude you're so full of shit. There's nothing wrong with liking Apple but seriously in what world was the Pixi considered an iPhone killer?
Stop being delusional....you're just feeding the Apple Haters like LAY.
You and I and everyone know that the Pre was the only true potential "iPhone killer" that Palm produced.
I think it is because they want their other phones to sell after the EVO comes out
@iHakr
Do you really think the demographic the Pixi is aimed at wants a giant EVO phone? Are you crazy? My wife has a Pixi and would NEVER consider an EVO.
@wmurch3 I'm a pretty power user (e-mail, actual phone calls), no desire for an EVO. Love the Pixi though.
@wmurch3 I went with the Pre over the Moment which my fiance got mainly because it fits in my pocket without looking ridiculous. All my brothers said I got a girl phone and that I should switch with her. But she has a purse to carry it around in.
My point is that not every phone needs to fit the huge screen ultra phone mold. I was considering the pixi because of the form factor and superior keyboard but mainly the lack of wifi killed it for me.
If sprint had the Pixi plus I may have gotten it. Although besides wanting the pixix keyboard I'm alright with the pre.
That being said palm should have a phone to fit the large screen (and probably landscape keyboard) mold for the people that would like webos but prefer that design.
No phone is right for everyone but if your trying to popularize an OS and your the only ones making the phones, you should have an option so people don't have to go somewhere else for the phone they want.
