Edit: "Open usually wins?" Didn't catch that the first time round, I wouldn't say It usually wins, i'd just hope that. I'd say open usually innovates. I think android is one of the times where open may win, but it'll be a rare thing.
@Imran I know it sucks, I love Linux, posting from ubuntu 10.04 now. Got 4 android phones 2 linux laptops (both came with linux installed) Got linux on my xbox too. and a thin terminal pc. and my nintendo DS, PSP and 4 pc's..
Unfortunately the deal breaker for linux is WINE as it solves the problem of compatability with windows apps. That's the main reason noone uses linux, heck I'll still use windows for guild wars, simply because its more compatible than with WINE
@Imran What has open done for the Android platform? If ever Android's market surpasses Apple's or Blackberries, it would only be because the OS is free to be licensed to anyone and not only controlled by one company. How much money are they actually making off each phone?
@TareG Talk is cheap. What's important is how well Flash runs on a mobile device and how good the battery life is. Merely rendering Flash is just the start.
@kenny goo I never got that, they released 2.0 then 2.1 like a month after, but both are called eclair? I know it was only a minor update, but it stuffs things up slightly
On a side note, It's Q2 and I'm a cliq owner, where's my upgrade (not a minor one again PLEASE)
@MosesusedaniPad Well I'm assuming that Adobe is eager to attack Apple and, thanks to their announced partnership with Google, they will try to properly implement flash to deliver said message to Cupertino.
Of course, I have no idea if flash will work out for the best or not. But when two companies as big as Google and Adobe decide to integrate their technology, you should be a little more than afraid.
I'm just where this notion that Android sales will eventually surpass iPhone sales is coming from...?
Just because it's open doesn't mean shit. Apple isn't only selling the iPhone on AT&T. They do sell it globally on multiple carriers in all the major markets.
Seriously it's not going to happen. Google/android will never be as popular as Apple/iPhone OS
Keep dream android fanboys/Apple Haters.
And IF you think I'm wrong or will be wrong SHOW ME SOME PROOF. Rather than just downrank me because I don't like android.
Because so far all evidence shows is that month after month Apple continues to sell a shitload of iPhones in all continents. And quarter after quarter Apple reports RECORD earnings.
@Ashrossy One reason why Google's market value gap v Apple has increased after they released Android is because while google is now committed in a big way to compete with iPhone OS in terms of R&D, there is absolutely no money to be made there for them. In fact Verizon rejecting the Nexus One was a clear sign Apple was able to get Verizon to do that. Google makes money off of selling the Nexus One, but not from the HTC incredible.
In relative terms Google's Android strategy has cost them around a $80b market cap gap v Apple. Before they decided to compete with Android both companies had equal market caps. Google was a little ahead. 80b is a HUGE number. 80b is how much ALL of Verizon is worth! And that is just the gap between Apple and Google!
Now you're thinking isn't Apple over valued then compared to Google? Well, no. Even with that huge gap, Apple has a lower PE than Google.
@TheRogueFFAngel Umm i'm by no means a iPhone hater, infact I'd love one if it was more affordable. However, look in any shop (at least in the UK), Orange over here, There's the Tattoo, Hero, Cliq, Desire, X10 and soon the N1. O2 have the galaxy, Vodafone have the N1 and maybe others... I'm sure there are more I missed out (T-mobile for example are well known supporters of android).
Look at the iPhone. One phone. Might sell better but pit it against all the android phones and you'll see a significant increase in sales. Maybe not as significant as the iPhone but it's not been out as long. Even my grandma has an android phone, she just knows the google logo.
What do more people use, an apple product or google. Seriously.
That said, the iphone4g or whatever will give a huge boost in sales. Steve jobs is the peter molenuax(sp?) of the phone industry, Massive hype, still an amazing product, just not as great as expected.
@jaffreywali No money to be made there for them? Do you really think that? Do they make no money from their search engine just because they don't charge for its use? It may not be such an obvious or straight-forward path to income as "build the hardware and os, sell the hardware and os", but the path is most definitely there.
No flames here...its you android fanboys who are trolling Engadget all the time since Gizmodo is wise to your bullshit.
And notice how I was downranked simply for having a different opinion? Because I don't think google's philosophy is all sunshine, bunnies, and love I'm apparently an Apple "Fanboy" when really I'm an Apple Supporter and only because I hate you Apple Haters...
And yes look at what that ONE phone has done against all the competition throw against it.
After having an iPhone 3GS since June of last year I can 100% say that its the best phone I've ever had the pleasure of owning. And even more importantly I'd still buy an iPhone 3GS before I bought an HTC Incredible, a droid, a nexus one, or any other of the countless (yet most of those are horrible) android devices out there.
So yes Apple has one phone...but damn if it's a BEAST of a phone. It's sold over 50 million on its OWN over the span of 3 generations.
No android device has ever done that. No android device will ever do that.
That's all I'm saying .Show me the PROOF where android will actually beat Apple
@TheLondonExchange You class me as an android fanboy? May I ask under what grounds? I use windows and linux, and I would use Mac if I could afford one (and no, that's not a dig at pricing). iPhone is a good phone, a great phone, but in my opinion, it wouldn't do so well otherwise. I wouldn't trade my cliq for one, because, to be honest. I'd rather support open source. Android is the only way open source will go mainstream (imo), and i'll support that in any way possible. But mostly, i'm about cross-compatibility, as I type this I have more tabs open trying to decide the best cross-platform graphics API, and ways to implement that. DirectX may be what most people go for, and it's more mainstream, used more in published games, but OpenGL is open-source, free, and thus, much easier to tailor to my needs.
What if you don't like the iPhone's software keyboard? Can you download more (i'm not sure myself on this). Or is there an iPhone you can buy with a Hardware keyboard? What if you want an FM radio? Or a higher megapixel (or lower) camera. If you want a cheap phone with basics (tattoo), or a stupidly high res camera (x10) or just a hardware keyboard (backflip/cliq/g1). It all depends. iPhone doesn't have that variety. You can't look at one phone and how it sells (how many has the 3G sold versus the 2G or the first, they are different phones after all). You look at the platform it was built on.
@TheLondonExchange it's not your opinion that gets you downranked its that you honestly come acrossas a dick and that you mock people that dont have the same opinion not even nicely it's blunt and blatant. You don't give an opinion so much as you point fingers and cry about apple. If your going to critique people atleast give a valad reason. By the way your such a hypocrite
The whole DOS vs Linux comparison doesn't work so well because DOS was a well entrenched monopoly by the time the first line of Linux was written. That was why Linux was written to begin with.
Although despite all of that, open still continues to chip away.
They don't make money from search. Google makes money from advertising and that's it. I'm sure that google earth enterprise and pro docs are hardly the bread winners in google.
@Ashrossy Most 'open' things don't win. I think it's because they aren't trying the type of new things that the majority of people notice. & they have no advertising budget. I remember typing in Ubuntu 10.2 into linux last week to see what it would be like and there was only two videos that were poorly made. Open is only as powerful as the community, and I hope they do one day win.
@TheLondonExchange holla! People r seriously haters man... U can't stop a hater from hating... I wonder why big red lost 1 million subscriber to AT&T this first quarter? Why do all my friends dislike their android phones? Hmmmm...
Exactly afterall Android is supposed to be saving Verizon just like they saved Motorola. The only company gaining anything from Android is Google, the others are just irrelevant pawns.
@Imran Check what far out the most webservers these days run on, and then get back here and say if open does or does not win. Or wait, let me help you there. The biggest part runs GNU/Linux, a good part runs some open BSD variant, a small part Windows Server and even a smaller part OSX server. And while Windows may be the most used desktop-OS, most desktop usage is browsing/mailing, which is done mostly through open-OS based servers, so almost every person on the internet is actually a user of Linux/BSD to some extent. Open wins.
@TheLondonExchange man at the end of the day, it's just a product!! you own it, not the other way around!! without a serious competition you will still pay premium and accept bullshit rules for smth that obviously shouldn't cost that much...the only thing keeping iPhone 3gs on top is the apps and android might change this...then apple might actually offer you smth at a fair price
@TheLondonExchange I don't think any single model of handset will necessarily outsell an iPhone either, but I don't think that's the point. Android is just an operating system which works on many different handsets in the same way that Windows works on many different computers. It's not really a like for like comparison. "Open usually wins" - not sure about that statement, but personally I prefer open.
It's funny how Apple fanboy always call out apple hater. You apple hater this and you apple hater that. But they didnt realize that since they love apple so much, they are turning into Google Hater and Microsoft Hater as well. Shall we call them Google hater and Microsoft that as well??
@MrAffrox Open has done things like allow rooted or "jailbroken" apps to be downloaded straight from the market. Open means google offers free navigation that works better than my tomtom. Open means someone out there is doing things like porting roms and firmware, and google offers help along the way.
Instead of doing something to stop rooting, google embraces it and opens even more api's for developers to play with.
@Ashrossy Comparing it to North Korea was just flat out stupid. Consumers here have the CHOICE of choosing Apple or choosing Android, WM, WebOS, etc. There is no limiting choice, Apple hasn't forced a person yet to buy an iPhone. Every single iPhone OS customer CHOSE to buy it. And if they don't like the fact that SOME things are not allowed on the platform, then they have the CHOICE to buy another phone. God, these people and this whole totalitarian argument are getting a bit dry and desperate to tarnish Apple.
@HTCAndroidTre btw to talk aboutt the porn being on the marketplace. i was just browsin through the app store on my itouch and i could have sworn that i saw a app called Top 25 sex positions... -___-
The Cobra Tag may help you win that losing battle, acting as a Bluetooth device that attaches to your key ring and connects to your phone, it gives you the opportunity to find the missing item if it's less than 30 feet away.

Why did they have to change it from Flan to Froyo? Flan rolls off the tongue better! Tastes nicer too!
Edit: "Open usually wins?" Didn't catch that the first time round, I wouldn't say It usually wins, i'd just hope that. I'd say open usually innovates. I think android is one of the times where open may win, but it'll be a rare thing.
@Ashrossy
Because Flan sounds Flat i.e. weak.
While Froyo sounds new i.e. exciting.
Android is here for the kill.
@Ashrossy "Open always wins"? Yeah, tell that to Linux
Hell yeah! Android is getting flash!
Time to buy my Nexus One!
@Imran I know it sucks, I love Linux, posting from ubuntu 10.04 now.
Got 4 android phones 2 linux laptops (both came with linux installed)
Got linux on my xbox too. and a thin terminal pc. and my nintendo DS, PSP and 4 pc's..

Wasn't Flan the rumored nickname for 2.1 even though it wasn't the real development name (both it and 2.0 are still just Eclair)?

@Imran
Uh yeah tell that to almost every web server out there. Linux won. Not on the desktop front... yet.
@TheLondonExchange
Uh... ur "beast of a phone" can't take photos at night... and up till April 2010, it's camera couldn't zoom in and out.
That's just one feature I'm using to downrank you... would you like me to sing the rest of the song?
@TheLondonExchange You class me as an android fanboy?

@Imran Dunno, Linux seems to be doing pretty well, http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/136161/financial_companies_lead_linux_charge/
Did "computers" start in peoples homes, or in big businesses then trickle down to us? Someone needs a little history lesson.
@TareG
So you're downranking me because of something you wanted that you didn't get?
That doesn't matter to me.
And it obviously didn't bother the millions who bought it.
If you want to downrank me it should be because you actually have something that discredits or disvalues what I've said.
I stick by what I said. All you Apple Haters do is pick one lil feature and bitch and moan about it.
Guess what most people don't care.
@TheLondonExchange Uh, that's not "just a feature".... it's like saying that a smartphone cannot send text messages....
By the way, Android already outpaced your "beast of a phone" in US web traffic, despite of your beast having a 1-yr advantage:
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/04/27/android-outpaces-iphone-in-us-web-traffic.html
Now that was FAST.

Dude why are you wasting your time, the way this blog has turned, if you aren't sucking off Google, then you get downranked.
@livindreamer
Exactly. Any place where you need a box that just flashes a cursor and does some menial yet stressful task very reliably, THAT's where you want Linux.

April(04) 2010
@Dr Kwame Nkrumah
Best get to some Apple fan forum where you can bad mouth Google all you want then.
