There's nothing groundbreaking in here, but AT&T has just thrown up a good one-page summary of how this whole WWAN thing is going to go down for new
iPad 3G owners
come this Friday. As we've already known, you'll be paying $14.99 for 250MB or $29.99 for unlimited (yes, truly unlimited with no 5GB cap) data in addition to free access to AT&T's comprehensive collection of WiFi hotspots -- perhaps the more interesting bits, though, have to do with plan management on the 250MB setup. Basically, you'll get a warning on your iPad when you get to 20 percent of your allowance remaining, then again at 10 percent, and finally when you run out; at each message, you'll have the chance to re-up (of course, if you find yourself blowing through 250MB on a regular basis, you probably want the unlimited plan anyhow). Plans renew automatically after every 30 days, and you can check your usage at your leisure from Settings on the device. Sure, you might be cursing the fact that you've found a legitimate reason to spend another $30 every month -- but at least you'll be able to set it up and manage it without a call to customer service.
While i don't really like apple (or AT&T) those are very fairly priced plans.. and the fact that there are no overage charges is rather impressive imo
When one of the Radioshack employees asked a customer if he wanted to upgrade his Sprint phone from an old beat up Palm Treo, the customer laughed her off and then explained that the Palm Treo was costing only $5 a month for unlimited data and text. The customer got that plan five years ago, when he was haggling over his contract, and Sprint still has to honor his contract - so long as he doesn't upgrade. (/Coolstorybro)
The point is, because these plans are non-contract plans, AT&T can alter the agreement at any time - data limit caps, per KB use charges, the whole kit-n-kaboodle. And from what I've seen in the news so far, a company will only act in the interest of itself. So buyer beware - this can go downhill from here.
We need to hear some updates from whoever made MyWi once the 3G iPad releases. Certainly one of the best / most useful apps to date on my iPhone.
@eTron
Tru dat,
MyWi rocks.
do you know if it can support more than one wifi device at a time?
I'm with all of the other peeps in here...why can't AT&T provide iPhone users with this same feature set for data? I mean, seriously, if their infrastructure is in place then it should be a no-brainer. C'mon guys...do the right thing. :)
So there is no data rollover? I think that is lame. I'm on wifi nearly all the time but I want to know I have a little data sitting around. I don't want to re-buy my data if I'm only using a few megs a month. AT&T? Can you hear me on this one? You originated the whole rollover thing.
What I want to know and can't seem to find out is if the iPad will work with the AT&T 3G microcell. Anyone have any thoughts about this, Weill the device have a "phone number" that can be plugged into the macrocell access config page?
All smartphone plans, including iPhone plans, are unlimited. Only laptop cards and tethering plans have a 5GB cap.
Anybody else notice that the plan is good for 30 DAYS, not a month? In other words, you pay for 12 'month's of service, you'll only get 360 days of service. Not to mention if it's a leap year...
@juma3200
Well it's no contract and that's how AT&T does prepaid, 30 days.
The $15 is still a better deal for those who don't use a lot of data and are near wifi a lot. And the $30 is good for those who travel a lot and don't want to pay overpriced hotel access rates.
Not sure where you guys are getting your information, but I work for AT&T. Any of our unlimited data plans(iPhone, Blackberry, etc) are definitely unlimited. There is no cap.
The only cap on any of our devices are aircards and tethering, which is 5GB.
@boochy You are definitely right!!! It is in ALL THEIR BUSINESS INFO AND ONLINE AT ATT.COM!!! It has been that way for several years. Anyone who complains cannot read;it SPECIFICALLY STATES THE LIMITATIONS IN BOLD WRITING!!! I don't know if you can get around the tethering part;I have an unlimited data plan with my two SE phones and use pc suite software from SE to use my phones as a modem. WHY DO YOU NEED CRACKPHONES AND CRACKBERRY'S?!!
WHY DO YOU DUMBASSES NEED A CRACKPAD? WHY DO YOU NEED A CRACKBERRY AND A CRACKPHONE? ISN'T A REGULAR PHONE ENOUGH? I pay LESS for my SE phones with UNLIMITED DATA AND NAVIGATION!!! $15/mnth. INCLUDES BOTH!!!
@hated one Yup,you are one of the dumbasses I was talking about,you stupid living brain donor. You just showed what a dumbass and a stupid living brain donor YOU REALLY ARE!!!
@hated one
Only if they do that with all devices. Why does only the iPad get this hot deal? I would like $15 month to month too, since I'm often on my laptop and don't use tons of mobile data. I don't tether either.
International data pricing???
@hated one
They launch April 30th at 5PM EST.
I wish the iPod had 3G
It is worth to know the worth of 250MB data.

Wondering if there is a way to remove the AT&T sim and put it in an iPhone that can be jailbroken/is already jailbroken or just one that can tether (doesn't have to be an iPhone. My 3gs crapped out and I wound up with 3.1.3 trying to fix it. I miss MyWi...
